Book The Evolution of Civil Military Relations in East Central Europe and the Former Soviet Union

Download or read book The Evolution of Civil Military Relations in East Central Europe and the Former Soviet Union written by Natalie Mychajlyszyn and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2004-05-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dismantlement of the communist system of control of the military and its replacement with a democratic model is one of the most significant aspects of the post-communist transition in East-Central Europe and the former Soviet-Union. The success of democratic civil-military reforms is an important and underappreciated measure of the state of democratic transitions in these countries, and it also has important implications for and links with regional security and NATO relations. This book examines the state of democratic civil-military reforms in nine East-Central and former Soviet states: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Russia, and Ukraine. An examination of these states is of particular interest and importance given their varied relationship with NATO, a relationship that is influenced to a large extent by the amount of progress in reforming their post-communist system of control of their militaries. Following a comprehensive theoretical chapter on civil-military relations, the individual chapters consider the accomplishments as well as the outstanding shortcomings of democratic civil-military reforms. Overall, the book argues that the weaknesses apparent in all these countries in the implementation of the democratic norms of civilian control of the military require continued attention in order to strengthen not only the relationship with NATO (wither membership is already obtained or sought) but also regional security in general.

Book Population Change and European Security

Download or read book Population Change and European Security written by Lawrence Freedman and published by Brassey's (UK) Limited. This book was released on 1991 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The conclusion underlines how widely population size can impact the broad canvas of the sociological, political and strategic scene. The widening North-South divide seems likely to spawn an era of frequent, localised and painful encounters in which the technological advantages possessed by the West will not necessarily prevail in the way they did in the Gulf War. That mass armies may now be becoming obsolete in the West as technology compensates for numerical inferiority, may, on the evidence of this book, be just as well."--BOOK JACKET.

Book A Cardboard Castle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vojtech Mastny
  • Publisher : Central European University Press
  • Release : 2005-04-10
  • ISBN : 6155053693
  • Pages : 786 pages

Download or read book A Cardboard Castle written by Vojtech Mastny and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-10 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to document, analyze, and interpret the history of the Warsaw Pact based on the archives of the alliance itself. As suggested by the title, the Soviet bloc military machine that held the West in awe for most of the Cold War does not appear from the inside as formidable as outsiders often believed, nor were its strengths and weaknesses the same at different times in its surprisingly long history, extending for almost half a century. The introductory study by Mastny assesses the controversial origins of the "superfluous" alliance, its subsequent search for a purpose, its crisis and consolidation despite congenital weaknesses, as well as its unexpected demise. Most of the 193 documents included in the book were top secret and have only recently been obtained from Eastern European archives by the PHP project. The majority of the documents were translated specifically for this volume and have never appeared in English before. The introductory remarks to individual documents by co-editor Byrne explain the particular significance of each item. A chronology of the main events in the history of the Warsaw Pact, a list of its leading officials, a selective multilingual bibliography, and an analytical index add to the importance of a publication that sets the new standard as a reference work on the subject and facilitate its use by both students and general readers.

Book Regional Economic Issues Special Report 25 Years of Transition

Download or read book Regional Economic Issues Special Report 25 Years of Transition written by Mr.James Roaf and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 25 years have seen a dramatic transformation in Europe’s former communist countries, resulting in their reintegration with the global economy, and, in most cases, major improvements in living standards. But the task of building full market economies has been difficult and protracted. Liberalization of trade and prices came quickly, but institutional reforms—such as governance reform, competition policy, privatization and enterprise restructuring—often faced opposition from vested interests. The results of the first years of transition were uneven. All countries suffered high inflation and major recessions as prices were freed and old economic linkages broke down. But the scale of output losses and the time taken for growth to return and inflation to be brought under control varied widely. Initial conditions and external factors played a role, but policies were critical too. Countries that undertook more front-loaded and bold reforms were rewarded with faster recovery and income convergence. Others were more vulnerable to the crises that swept the region in the wake of the 1997 Asia crisis.
