Book excerpt: Radio Galaxies: Radiation Transfer, Dynamics, Stability and Evolution of a Synchrotron Plasmon deals with the physics of a region in space containing magnetic field and thermal and relativistic particles (a plasmon). The synchrotron emission and absorption of this region are discussed, along with the properties of its spectrum; its linear and circular polarization; transfer of radiation through such a region; its dynamics and expansion; and interaction with external medium. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume explores the stability, turbulence, and acceleration of particles in a synchrotron plasmon as well as its application to the physics of radio galaxies. The discussion begins with a description of extragalactic radio sources and their properties, followed by an analysis of the emission and absorption of synchrotron radiation. Subsequent chapters focus on the transfer of polarized radiation in a magnetoactive plasma; hydromagnetics and hydromagnetic stability; confinement and structure of extended radio sources; and radio-tail galaxies. The book also considers compact radio sources before concluding with an evaluation of radio source theories. This monograph is addressed primarily to radio astronomers and graduate students working on the interpretation of observational data.

This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume II contains literature published in 1974 and received before August IS, 1974; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. Begin ning with this volume some minor changes of our classification scheme have been made. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Book excerpt: When I first laid out the framework for A History of Ancient Mathe matical Astronomy, I intended to carry the discussion down to the last applications of Greek astronomical methodology, i. e. Copernicus, Brahe, and Kepler. But as the work proceeded, it became evident that this plan was much too ambitious, and so I decided to terminate my History with late antiquity, well before Islam. Nevertheless, I did not discard the running commentary that I had prepared when studying De revolutionibus in its relation to the methodology of the Almagest. Only recently, E. S. Kennedy and his collaborators had opened access to the" Maragha School" (mainly Ibn ash-Shalir), revealing close parallels to Copernicus's procedures. Accordingly, it seemed useful to make available a modern analysis of De revolutionibus, and thus in 1975 I prepared for publication "Notes on Copernicus. " In the meantime, however, Noel Swerdlow, also starting from Greek astronomy, not only extended his work into a deep analysis of De revolu tionibus, but also systematically investigated its sources and predecessors (Peurbach, Regiomontanus, etc. ). I was aware of these studies through his publications as well as from numerous conversations on the subject at The Institute for Advanced Study and at Brown University. It became clear to me that my own investigations lay at too superficial a level, and I therefore withdrew my manuscript and suggested to Swerdlow that he undertake a thoroughgoing revision and amplification of my "Notes. " His acceptance of my proposal initiated the present publication.
