Book The Archaeology of North Pacific Fisheries

Download or read book The Archaeology of North Pacific Fisheries written by Madonna L. Moss and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, fisheries were crucial to the sustenance of the First Peoples of the Pacific Coast. Yet human impact has left us with a woefully incomplete understanding of their histories prior to the industrial era. Covering Alaska, British Columbia, and Puget Sound, The Archaeology of North Pacific Fisheries illustrates how the archaeological record reveals new information about ancient ways of life and the histories of key species. Individual chapters cover salmon, as well as a number of lesser-known species abundant in archaeological sites, including pacific cod, herring, rockfish, eulachon, and hake. In turn, this ecological history informs suggestions for sustainable fishing in today’s rapidly changing environment.

Book Possessing the Pacific

Download or read book Possessing the Pacific written by Stuart Banner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, British and American settlers acquired a vast amount of land from indigenous people throughout the Pacific, but in no two places did they acquire it the same way. Stuart Banner tells the story of colonial settlement in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. Today, indigenous people own much more land in some of these places than in others. And certain indigenous peoples benefit from treaty rights, while others do not. These variations are traceable to choices made more than a century ago--choices about whether indigenous people were the owners of their land and how that land was to be transferred to whites. Banner argues that these differences were not due to any deliberate land policy created in London or Washington. Rather, the decisions were made locally by settlers and colonial officials and were based on factors peculiar to each colony, such as whether the local indigenous people were agriculturalists and what level of political organization they had attained. These differences loom very large now, perhaps even larger than they did in the nineteenth century, because they continue to influence the course of litigation and political struggle between indigenous people and whites over claims to land and other resources. "Possessing the Pacific" is an original and broadly conceived study of how colonial struggles over land still shape the relations between whites and indigenous people throughout much of the world.

Book Narratives of Citizenship

Download or read book Narratives of Citizenship written by Aloys N.M. Fleischmann and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining various cultural products-music, cartoons, travel guides, ideographic treaties, film, and especially the literary arts-the contributors of these thirteen essays invite readers to conceptualize citizenship as a narrative construct, both in Canada and beyond. Focusing on indigenous and diasporic works, along with mass media depictions of Indigenous and diasporic peoples, this collection problematizes the juridical, political, and cultural ideal of universal citizenship. Readers are asked to envision the nation-state as a product of constant tension between coercive practices of exclusion and assimilation. Narratives of Citizenship is a vital contribution to the growing scholarship on narrative, nationalism, and globalization. Contributors: David Chariandy, Lily Cho, Daniel Coleman, Jennifer Bowering Delisle, Aloys N.M. Fleischmann, Sydney Iaukea, Marco Katz, Lindy Ledohowski, Cody McCarroll, Carmen Robertson, Laura Schechter, Paul Ugor, Nancy Van Styvendale, Dorothy Woodman, and Robert Zacharias.

It is at once a narrative of real life on board, a history of some of the most famous vessels in the world, and also a history of Greenpeace itself, which goes beyond the oceans and touches on many aspects of the organization's work. In the end though it aims to bring out the personal stories and firsthand accounts of the ships' adventures—tales from the high seas, full of action and daring but also of humanity and great compassion. Starting with the early life of Greenpeace and the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior I by the French secret service through to the imprisonment of the Arctic 30 by the Russians, the stories are brought to life with photos from the Greenpeace archives, maps, and nautical charts. The most symbolic items belonging to the ship's historical inventory are be also included. Maite Mompo has been a Greenpeace activist for over ten years. With the sea in her blood she started on a small boat, the Zorba, and then moved on to crew for the Arctic Sunrise, Esperanza, and Rainbow Warrior. Spending half her year at sea, she has sailed from pole to pole, taken part in numerous actions, and has put herself "between the harpoon and the whale."
