Book Poet Warrior A Memoir

Download or read book Poet Warrior A Memoir written by Joy Harjo and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National bestseller An ALA Notable Book Three-term poet laureate Joy Harjo offers a vivid, lyrical, and inspiring call for love and justice in this contemplation of her trailblazing life. Joy Harjo, the first Native American to serve as U.S. poet laureate, invites us to travel along the heartaches, losses, and humble realizations of her "poet-warrior" road. A musical, kaleidoscopic, and wise follow-up to Crazy Brave, Poet Warrior reveals how Harjo came to write poetry of compassion and healing, poetry with the power to unearth the truth and demand justice. Harjo listens to stories of ancestors and family, the poetry and music that she first encountered as a child, and the messengers of a changing earth—owls heralding grief, resilient desert plants, and a smooth green snake curled up in surprise. She celebrates the influences that shaped her poetry, among them Audre Lorde, N. Scott Momaday, Walt Whitman, Muscogee stomp dance call-and-response, Navajo horse songs, rain, and sunrise. In absorbing, incantatory prose, Harjo grieves at the loss of her mother, reckons with the theft of her ancestral homeland, and sheds light on the rituals that nourish her as an artist, mother, wife, and community member. Moving fluidly between prose, song, and poetry, Harjo recounts a luminous journey of becoming, a spiritual map that will help us all find home. Poet Warrior sings with the jazz, blues, tenderness, and bravery that we know as distinctly Joy Harjo.

Book Warrior at Heart

Download or read book Warrior at Heart written by Clem Dupré and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-12-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can I free myself from depression? Could I be brave enough to fully open my heart? Queer identity, self-esteem, love stories and family relationships, there is a lot to unscramble for a person in their twenties and early thirties. Clem is young, smart and freshly graduated. Yet, instead of starting a career, they yearn to understand the meaning of life. And to be free from their unrelenting suffering. In an attempt to seek the truth, Clem relinquishes most of their possessions and starts a lonely quest, the travel that will change their life. They undertake both a profound inner journey and a trip around the world. This book is largely autobiographical. Through 42 poems, Clem shares some contemplations from this journey. For example, in the poems Shaky and Longing by the Sea, Clem expresses how they felt as they jumped into the unknown. In Vulnerability and Rivers and Stars, Clem shares about being willing to let go of blinders and barriers. The poems Refuge and The Three Jewels are a testimony of the developing commitment of the author to the Buddhist path. Through their aimless wanderings, Clem finds their teachers in the mountains, in the seas and in interesting people met along the way. During moments of retreats and deep introspection, they finally get a glimpse of their worthiness. Does the word "warrior" sound harsh? What is the point of proclaiming oneself as a warrior when one's deepest aspiration is to find inner peace? Eventually it makes sense. To live with an open heart that never shuts down, even in difficult situations, one needs an ample amount of courage. Warrior at Heart boils down to looking for the light within, and forgiving oneself and others. It is a story of hope, love and courage. Some of the Shambhala teachings that are being contemplated in a poetic form are the ones on basic goodness, bravery, gentleness, confidence and the genuine heart of sadness. Some of the Buddhist teachings that are weaved through the poems are the Four Noble Truths, taking refuge, emptiness, impermanence, relative and ultimate reality, the bodhisattva ideal, our kind mothers and spiritual friends. Clem uses their own experiences, their imagination and the Shambhala and Buddhist teachings to inspire their poetry writing. They illustrate by doing simple doodling while connecting deeply with the heart. Each poem comes with its drawing. Warrior at Heart is the first book written and illustrated by Clem. Clem hopes their poems and illustrations will stimulate you to become a gentle warrior, or galvanise your existing warriorship!

Download or read book Transforming Warriors written by Peter Haldén and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an interdisciplinary study of how different cultures have sought to transform individuals into warriors. War changes people, however a less explored question is how different societies want people to change as they are turned into warriors. When societies go to war they recognize that a boundary is being crossed. The participants are expected to do things that are otherwise prohibited, or at least governed by different rules. This edited volume analyses how different cultures have conceptualized the transformations of an individual passing from a peacetime to a wartime existence to become an active warrior. Despite their differences, all societies grapple with the same question: how much of the individual’s peace-self should be and can be retained in the state of war? The book explores cases such as the Nordic berserkers, the Japanese samurai, and European knights, as well as modern soldiers in Germany, Liberia, and Sweden. It shows that archaic and modern societies are more similar than we usually think: both kinds of societies use myths, symbols, and rituals to create warriors. Thus, this volume seeks to redefine theories of modernization and secularization. It shows that military organizations need to take myths, symbols, and rituals seriously in order to create effective units. This book will be of much interest to students of military studies, war studies, sociology, religion, and international relations in general.

Book excerpt: From George R. R. Martin's Introduction to Warriors: "People have been telling stories about warriors for as long as they have been telling stories. Since Homer first sang the wrath of Achilles and the ancient Sumerians set down their tales of Gilgamesh, warriors, soldiers, and fighters have fascinated us; they are a part of every culture, every literary tradition, every genre. All Quiet on the Western Front, From Here to Eternity, and The Red Badge of Courage have become part of our literary canon, taught in classrooms all around the country and the world. Our contributors make up an all-star lineup of award-winning and bestselling writers, representing a dozen different publishers and as many genres. We asked each of them for the same thing—a story about a warrior. Some chose to write in the genre they're best known for. Some decided to try something different. You will find warriors of every shape, size, and color in these pages, warriors from every epoch of human history, from yesterday and today and tomorrow, and from worlds that never were. Some of the stories will make you sad, some will make you laugh, and many will keep you on the edge of your seat." The stories in the first mass market volume of this book are: Introduction: Stories of the Spinner Rack, by George R. R. Martin Forever Bound, by Joe Haldeman The Eagle and the Rabbit, by Steven Saylor And Ministers of Grace, by Tad Williams The King of Norway, by Cecelia Holland Defenders of the Frontier, by Robert Silverberg The Mystery Knight, by George R. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Crusade to the Holy Land, transformed by the imagination and religious fervor of an Italian gentleman of the late sixteenth century. A mission of war armed protagonists, watched over by angelical and diabolical forces, interrupted by adventures, enchantments, love stories, unexpected transgressions. Book A Bibliography of Modern Arthuriana 1500 2000

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotated bibliography of the Arthurian legend in modern English-language fiction, not only in literary texts, but in television, music, and art. The legend of Arthur has been a source of fascination for writers and artists in English since the fifteenth century, when Thomas Malory drew together for the first time in English a variety of Arthurian stories from a number of sources to form the Morte Darthur. It increased in popularity during the Victorian era, when after Tennyson's treatment of the legend, not only authors and dramatists, but painters, musicians, and film-makers found a sourceof inspiration in the Arthurian material. This interdisciplinary, annotated bibliography lists the Arthurian legend in modern English-language fiction, from 1500 to 2000, including literary texts, film, television, music, visual art, and games. It will prove an invaluable source of reference for students of literary and visual arts, general readers, collectors, librarians, and cultural historians--indeed, by anyone interested in the history of the waysin which Camelot has figured in post-medieval English-speaking cultures. ANN F. HOWEY is Assistant Professor at Brock University, Canada; STEPHEN R. REIMER is Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, Canada

Book Priest King of the Warriors and Witch Queen of the Others

Download or read book Priest King of the Warriors and Witch Queen of the Others written by Michal Cigán and published by Masarykova univerzita. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Heroism in battle has been celebrated throughout history, yet it is one of the least understood virtues. What makes some men and women perform extraordinary deeds on the battlefield? What makes them risk their lives in the pursuit of victory?Max Hastings, one of our foremost military historians, has seen combat up close and written about it for decades. In Warriors, he brings us the experiences of fourteen soldiers who fought in the wars of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. From an exuberant cavalry officer in Napoleon’s army to an abused orphan who in World War II became America’s youngest general since Custer, to an Israeli officer who recovered from a devastating injury to save his country, each portrait depicts a unique and remarkable story. A tribute to soldierly valor and a deeply insightful study of combat, this is an essential book for anyone who wishes to understand what it means to be at war.
