  • ISBN : 0664234399
  • Pages : 477 pages

Download or read book Psalms written by James Luther Mays and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms have a double identity. They are scripture and liturgy. They compose a book of the Bible and are found in our hymnals and books of worship and prayer. When we think of them in historical perspective, another identity emerges. They are the liturgical poetry of ancient Israel, texts with a history of composition and use before they became scripture. A commentary in this Interpretation series needs to keep all three identities in view. That puts some strain on the commentator's task. The attempt to interpret the Psalms in awareness of the depth in their identity explains some things about the commentary and its writing. - Preface.

Book excerpt: Over the last seven months, I have served as the chaplain for a task force made up of dedicated warriors who are a daily inspiration of devotion, selflessness and honor. The inspiration for these reflections came from the moments in prayer that I spent with these warriors prior to their missions. Often, our prayer time would start with reading a portion of one of King David's psalms. King David stands out as the definitive human warrior of the Bible who was also a man after God's own heart. His life was marked by many of the same personal battles that face our contemporary warriors. This book contains short reflections on 31 of King David's psalms (possibly to be read over the course of a month). King David's psalms help us draw nearer to God in various types of situations. The reflections are arranged not in the order that the psalms come in the Book of Psalms but arranged by type of psalm. Just like with books (non-fiction, novels, poetry, or comic books), there are different types of psalms. Each type of psalm has its own purpose, characteristics and style. Each week of readings focus on a different type of psalm to explore, understand and apply. It is the purpose of these reflections to point us not just to the great Warrior King David, but to his King and God- God himself.

Book The Psalms of the Tamid Service

Download or read book The Psalms of the Tamid Service written by Peter Trudinger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume studies the seven psalms that were performed at the fundamental daily ritual of the Jerusalem Temple in the late Second Temple period (Psalms 24, 48, 82, 94, 81, 93, 92). It is the first comprehensive and detailed study of this richly-relevant liturgical collection. The work centers around a literary poetic analysis of the collection as a whole, focussing on unifying features such as connections between psalms, overall structure, theme and plot. A review of the Tamid service and exegetical studies of each psalm are included. Three innovative sections illustrate the importance of the Tamid Psalms in Second Temple studies; topics include the formation of the Psalter, the structure of liturgical texts, and the performance of Temple worship.

Book Portraits of the Righteous in the Psalms

Download or read book Portraits of the Righteous in the Psalms written by Daniel C. Owens and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What have the Psalms to do with ethics? Readers prize the Psalter for its richly theological prayers, but into these prayers are woven a variety of ethical issues. This book explores the ethics of the Psalter by examining the four portraits of the righteous person that punctuate Book I. It begins by studying these psalms as individual compositions and then employs both the canonical approach and dialogic criticism to identify the complex relationship between the portraits' vision of the righteous life and its outcome. Does the righteous person enjoy security and the good life? The answer may be surprising, but joining the psalmist on the rocky path of the interface of faith and experience is certain to prove a formative experience.

Book Theopoetry of the Psalms

Download or read book Theopoetry of the Psalms written by C.J.A. Vos and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-10-10 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Theopoetry of the Psalms Cas J.A. Vos explores the beauty of the Psalms and examines their meaning within the context of exegesis, homiletics and poetry. By investigating the structure, literary genre, history and theology of the Psalms he traces the ways in which they continue to be relevant to contemporary readers and to modern worship. Vos scrutinizes the Psalms as a volume of poetry and a work of art; considers hermeneutical approaches and difficulties, providing not only a verse-by-verse analysis but also a contextual history; outlines a comprehensive homiletic theory for preaching the Psalms; and concludes with a study of the Psalms in liturgy. Theopoetry of the Psalms is valuable to those Biblical scholars who wish to explore the theological and exegetical interpretation of the Psalms as well as to those readers who are interested in liturgics and practical theology for preaching and worship.
