Book The Warrior Ethos

  • Author : Christopher Coker
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2007-06-11
  • ISBN : 1134096364
  • Pages : 181 pages

Download or read book The Warrior Ethos written by Christopher Coker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-06-11 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first scholarly book to look at the role of the 'warrior' in modern war, arguing that warriors' actions, and indeed thoughts, are increasingly patrolled and that the modern battlefield is an unforgiving environment in which to discharge their vocation. As war becomes ever more instrumentalized, so its existential dimension is fast being hollowed out. Technology is threatening the agency of the warrior and this volume paints a picture of early twenty-first century warfare, helping to explain why so many aspiring warriors are becoming disenchanted with their profession. Written by a leading thinker on warfare, this book sets out to explain what makes an American Marine a ‘warrior’ and why suicide bombers, or Al Qaeda fighters, do not qualify for this title. This distinction is one of the central features of the current War on Terror – and one that justifies much more extensive discussion than it has so far received. The Warrior Ethos will be of great interest to all students of military history, strategy, military sociology and war studies.

Book On the Warrior s Path Second Edition

Download or read book On the Warrior s Path Second Edition written by Daniele Bolelli and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining and insightful history of martial arts and the role of the warrior, drawing on pop culture, philosophy, mythology, religion, and spirituality The urge to forge one’s character by fighting, in daily life as well as on the mat, appeals to something deep within us. More than a collection of fighting techniques, martial arts constitute a path to developing body, spirit, and awareness. On the Warrior’s Path connects the martial arts with this larger perspective, merging subtle philosophies with no-holds-barred competition, Nietzsche with Bruce Lee, radical Taoism and Buddhism with the Star Wars Trilogy, traditional martial arts with basketball and American Indian culture. At the center of all these phenomena is the warrior. Though this archetype seems to manifest contradictory values, author Daniele Bolelli describes the heart of this tension: how the training of martial technique leads to a renunciation of violence, and how overcoming fear leads to a unique freedom. Aimed at students at any level or tradition of martial arts but also accessible to the armchair warrior, On the Warrior’s Path brings fresh insights to why martial arts remains an enduring and widespread art and discipline. Two new chapters in this second edition focus on spirituality in the martial arts and the author’s personal journey in the field.

Book The Servant Warrior

Book excerpt: The Servant Warrior was written to be an encouragement to all who already are in law enforcement, are considering law enforcement as a career and those who care about those in law enforcement. The Servant Warrior challenges the view that faith in God is a weakness or that there can't be a loving God in a world gone mad sometimes. Faith is a strength and supports the career of law enforcement. God cares deeply about this profession, provides direct proof of his support and provides guidance to those who follow this calling. As our Heavenly Father, he says "I approve of who you are " As a Servant Warrior, we are invited to two distinct roles. One is to serve the public well and the other is to be a warrior in the face of evil to protect the public from evil. The Servant Warrior explores these roles from a Biblical perspective. The Servant Warrior looks at the role of leadership, maintaining wellness and the importance of a committed marriage partner as a support mechanism for those in law enforcement....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WARS CHANGE, WARRIORS DON'T We are all warriors. Each of us struggles every day to define and defend our sense of purpose and integrity, to justify our existence on the planet and to understand, if only within our own hearts, who we are and what we believe in. Do we fight by a code? If so, what is it? What is the Warrior Ethos? Where did it come from? What form does it take today? How do we (and how can we) use it and be true to it in our internal and external lives? The Warrior Ethos is intended not only for men and women in uniform, but artists, entrepreneurs and other warriors in other walks of life. The book examines the evolution of the warrior code of honor and "mental toughness." It goes back to the ancient Spartans and Athenians, to Caesar's Romans, Alexander's Macedonians and the Persians of Cyrus the Great (not excluding the Garden of Eden and the primitive hunting band). Sources include Herodotus, Thucydides, Plutarch, Xenophon, Vegetius, Arrian and Curtius--and on down to Gen. George Patton, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and Israeli Minister of Defense, Moshe Dayan.

Book A Warrior s Heart

Download or read book A Warrior s Heart written by Tim Mehl and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-02-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Warrior's Heart is the "spiritual autobiography" of Tim G. Mehl. In it, he shares about his struggles with ADD/ADHD as a child, in a time when schools and parents did not know how to handle a child with these issues. This along with a difficult home life created feelings of self-worthlessness and a low self-esteem that led him toward the hippie movement of the '60s. His story takes you through those hippie years, along with the beginning of drug use and eventually dropping out of high school to enlist in the United States Navy. He goes into great detail of the verbal abuse he sustained by his father as well as the serious respiratory illness of his mother, who passed away just five days before his fifteen birthday. When suicide seemed to be the only answer for his pain and hurt, he found the love of God on the very day that he decided to kill himself. He shares the incredible things that the Lord did in him, for him and through him which eventually led him to become a peace officer with almost a thirty-year law enforcement career. He shares stories of God's protection, even when he wasn't walking his Christian witness. Near death experiences and how God protected him and kept him safe on the streets throughout his career as well as during his 10 year assignment working undercover. Tim also shares his healing from the wounds and scars left by his feelings of failure, rejection and worthlessness, that penetrated deep into his heart. By learning to forgive and receive forgiveness, Tim takes you through his discovery of understanding and knowing God as his heavenly Father, who has never rejected him or thought of him as a failure or worthless. Becoming an ordained minister in 2004, God is using Tim and his wife, Myrth, in various areas of ministry within their church. "I have no doubt whatsoever, that there are young people out there who are going through some of the exact things that I went through. If this book about my testimony can reach just one person for Jesus Christ, then everything that I ever went through was worth it. I'd do it all over again, if just one person comes to know Jesus as Lord and Savior."
