Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Early Chinese Empire: The Qin and the HanThe Qin (221- 206 BCE) and subsequent Han (202 BCE- 220 CE) dynasties unify China and establish a centralized empire, which endures and evolves down through 20th century. The Chinese empire is founded when the state of Qin unites the other Chinese states in 221 BCE and establishes a centralized system of government; Qin Shi Huangdi (Ch’in Shih Huang-ti), or the First Emperor of Qin, rules for a very short time (221-206 BCE) but lays the foundation for China’s imperial structure and begins construction of the Great Wall for defense to the north. At his death, an army of life-sized terra cotta warriors is buried near his tomb. The Han dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE) follows the short-lived Qin and rules China for 300 years. The Han greatly expands the Chinese empire. The Han dynasty retains the centralized bureaucracy and unified political system of the Qin but adopts and grafts upon this the Confucian view that government should be run by educated, ethical men. Chinese histories are abundant. The Chinese Stories Series has 8 volumes. There were history stories、fables、folk stories and fairy tales. And every kind of story, along with being informative and interesting, also taught us about filial piety and moral integrity, and encouraged us to do good and improve our-selves. A kind-hearted person was always rewarded in the end; a person who was willing to help others was always well-liked by others and always reaped benefits; and a person who was willing to work hard always succeeded in the end. Naturally, bad people always came to no good end. Each story was almost certain to finish in this way. And if we really think about it, endings such as these make sense; they are not just meaningless story plots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploratory scenario planning (XSP) can help communities prepare for uncertainties posed by climate change, pandemics, automation, and other unprecedented twenty-first-century challenges. This manual is a comprehensive resource for anyone interested in using this emergent planning approach, which is effective at the local, regional, or organizational level. Through the XSP process, stakeholders envision and develop various potential futures (i.e., scenarios) and consider how to measure and prepare for each, rather than working toward a single shared vision for the future. Through instructive case studies, recommendations, sample workshop agendas, and more, this manual equips would-be practitioners with the background knowledge, procedural guidance, and practical strategies to implement this planning tool successfully. Readers will be prepared to facilitate--or even lead--an effective, impactful XSP process in their own settings.
Download or read book Unbound written by Heather Boushey and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Financial Times Book of the Year “The strongest documentation I have seen for the many ways in which inequality is harmful to economic growth.” —Jason Furman “A timely and very useful guide...Boushey assimilates a great deal of recent economic research and argues that it amounts to a paradigm shift.” —New Yorker Do we have to choose between equality and prosperity? Decisions made over the past fifty years have created underlying fragilities in our society that make our economy less effective in good times and less resilient to shocks, such as today’s coronavirus pandemic. Many think tackling inequality would require such heavy-handed interference that it would stifle economic growth. But a careful look at the data suggests nothing could be further from the truth—and that reducing inequality is in fact key to delivering future prosperity. Presenting cutting-edge economics with verve, Heather Boushey shows how rising inequality is a drain on talent, ideas, and innovation, leading to a concentration of capital and a damaging under-investment in schools, infrastructure, and other public goods. We know inequality is fueling social unrest. Boushey shows persuasively that it is also a serious drag on growth. “In this outstanding book, Heather Boushey...shows that, beyond a point, inequality damages the economy by limiting the quantity and quality of human capital and skills, blocking access to opportunity, underfunding public services, facilitating predatory rent-seeking, weakening aggregate demand, and increasing reliance on unsustainable credit.” —Martin Wolf, Financial Times “Think rising levels of inequality are just an inevitable outcome of our market-driven economy? Then you should read Boushey’s well-argued, well-documented explanation of why you’re wrong.” —David Rotman, MIT Technology Review

Download or read book Competition and Productivity written by Thomas J. Holmes and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does competition spur productivity? And if so, how? These have long been regarded as central questions in economics. The extent of competition can be influenced by policy decisions, so understanding how competition impacts productivity and, in turn, living standards is of more than academic importance. To fully answer these questions of whether, and how, an increase in competition impacts productivity, two issues must be addressed. First, the authors define what we mean by an ¿increase in competition.¿ Second, they attempt to understand the mechanisms through which competition impacts productivity. Both issues present substantial challenges, which the authors address. Illustrations. This is a print-on-demand publication; it is not an original.
