Book excerpt: "Straddling the line between personal narrative and poetic abstraction, Pete Faziani is a true literary risk taker. Never quite settling on one theme, you get the sense reading this book that Faziani is just one man fumbling around in the dark trying to make sense of it all, and it's that sense of his own imperfections that's most comforting. Pete Faziani is one of us, only perhaps a little better with words. He understands that we all struggle for the right thing to say and says so beautifully." - John Dorsey, Author of Being the Fire

Book A Practical Guide for the Law Enforcement and Security Manager

Download or read book A Practical Guide for the Law Enforcement and Security Manager written by Jim Smith and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2004 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text uses both theory and practical application of leadership and management precepts to lead the reader through a variety of common scenarios. The theory is tied to actual experiences and scenarios that educate the reader through the critical thought process of decision making. This adds a level of learning not found in many texts that address either theory or practical applications but fail to link them. The topics discussed range from effective techniques in communications, decision-making issues and methods, and resource management. Issues that are critical to the manager such as emergency planning, response to critical incidents, supervision of specialty teams and operational issues are explored. One of the essential skills discussed for the manager is the collection, compilation, and interpretation of data. Data interpretation is the driving force in the allocation of resources and deployment of personnel. Further, this skill is important in the development of funding through grants. The manager's role in discipline, use of force, and morale are addressed. Timely events regarding the law enforcement manager's response to weapons of mass destruction, racial profiling, and litigation receive attention. Systems analysis is explored to educate the manager to appreciate upstream and downstream impacts of their decisions. Contemporary issues from the perspective of the supervisor and manager is addressed, with lessons learned and information conveyed that is applicable at all levels of management.

Book A Balance of Forces

Download or read book A Balance of Forces written by Kenneth J. Matulia and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the issue of police use of deadly force. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) obtained 10 years of FBI data for 57 cities on police 'justifiable homicide' (as defined by the FBI Uniform Crime Reports), conducted a 54-city survey of police departments, and analyzed written policies to identify factors involved in deadly force incidents. The study found that departments with sufficient numbers of street supervisors providing tactical guidance and manpower support have a lower incidence of use of deadly force, as do departments having management policy directives regarding stakeout units. Other contributing factors to lower deadly force rates appear to be use of smaller caliber weapons and review of deadly force incidents by police chiefs. Model policy guidelines to assist police executives in exerting maximum control over use of deadly force in their units were developed after review of model standards on deadly force issued by the FBI, American Law Institute, President's Commission, IACP, Institute of Government Affairs, and American Bar Association.

Book Internal Investigation

Download or read book Internal Investigation written by Frank Colaprete and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2007 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of law enforcement, the internal investigation process has held the most negative connotation of any investigation conducted by law enforcement personnel. As we progress through the new millennium, the need for efficient and effective law enforcement services and practices grows ever more critical. The goal of this book is to demonstrate this need for proper and complete internal investigations, and to teach the entry level and tenured police supervisor the form and function of the internal investigations process. The text selectively focuses on the purposes and practical implications of internal investigations and the pitfalls. The goal is to guide students and professionals through definitions, terminology, legal and labor issues, case law, techniques and procedures, critical and special investigations, including issues in administrative and civil claims. The reader will find a model for conducting internal investigations of police personnel that will allow a police supervisor or commander to perform investigations in a thorough, ethical, legal, and equitable manner. This book will meet the needs of attorneys who litigate cases involving allegations of police misconduct as well as representatives of collective bargaining groups who represent police personnel in similar actions. The text ends with the offering of evidence identification, evaluation and collection, case review processes, risk management, training and managing internal investigators, and the future trends in internal investigations.

Book Deadly Injustice

Download or read book Deadly Injustice written by Devon Johnson and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The murder of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin and the subsequent trial and acquittal of his assailant, George Zimmerman, sparked a passionate national debate about race and criminal justice in America that involved everyone from bloggers to mayoral candidates to President Obama himself. With increased attention to these causes, from St. Louis to Los Angeles, intense outrage at New York City’s Stop and Frisk program and escalating anger over the effect of mass incarceration on the nation’s African American community, the Trayvon Martin case brought the racialized nature of the American justice system to the forefront of our national consciousness. Deadly Injustice uses the Martin/Zimmerman case as a springboard to examine race, crime, and justice in our current criminal justice system. Contributors explore how race and racism informs how Americans think about criminality, how crimes are investigated and prosecuted, and how the media interprets and reports on crime. At the center of their analysis sit examples of the Zimmerman trial and Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law, providing current and resonant examples for readers as they work through the bigger-picture problems plaguing the American justice system. This important volume demonstrates how highly publicized criminal cases go on to shape public views about offenders, the criminal process, and justice more generally, perpetuating the same unjust cycle for future generations. A timely, well-argued collection, Deadly Injustice is an illuminating, headline-driven text perfect for students and scholars of criminology and an important contribution to the discussion of race and crime in America.
