Book Advanced LED Warning Signs for Rural Intersections Powered by Renewable Energy

Download or read book Advanced LED Warning Signs for Rural Intersections Powered by Renewable Energy written by Taek Mu Kwon and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A majority of intersection-related fatal crashes occur at rural, through/stop intersections. At these intersections, sight restrictions caused by vertical and horizontal curves negatively affect a driver's ability to safely accept a gap in the traffic stream. Static advanced warning signs are sometimes installed at these intersections to warn drivers on the main, through approaches that an intersection is ahead. These warning signs appear to be ineffective. A new Advanced Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Warning System was developed and deployed at a rural, through/stop intersection with limited intersection sight distance due to a severe vertical curve. This warning system actively detects vehicles on all approaches and activates LED blinker warning signs for the conflicting movements. The research project included analysis of driver behavior obtained through video data and a survey of local residents and frequent users of the intersection. This report describes the development, implementation, and evaluation results of this new warning system.

Book Strategies to Address Nighttime Crashes at Rural Unsignalized Intersections

Download or read book Strategies to Address Nighttime Crashes at Rural Unsignalized Intersections written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizens request the installation of roadway lighting in their communities based on several motivations, including the experience or perception that lighting improves traffic safety and reduces crime, while also providing a tangible benefit of taxpayer dollars at work. Roadway authority staff fully appreciate these citizen concerns; however, roadway lighting is expensive to install, supply energy to, and maintain in perpetuity. The installation of roadway lighting is only one of a number of strategies agencies have to address nighttime crash concerns. This research assists local agencies in deciding when, where, and how much rural intersection lighting to provide.

Book Traffic Signal Timing Manual

Download or read book Traffic Signal Timing Manual written by U.s. Department of Transportation and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report serves as a comprehensive guide to traffic signal timing and documents the tasks completed in association with its development. The focus of this document is on traffic signal control principles, practices, and procedures. It describes the relationship between traffic signal timing and transportation policy and addresses maintenance and operations of traffic signals. It represents a synthesis of traffic signal timing concepts and their application and focuses on the use of detection, related timing parameters, and resulting effects to users at the intersection. It discusses advanced topics briefly to raise awareness related to their use and application. The purpose of the Signal Timing Manual is to provide direction and guidance to managers, supervisors, and practitioners based on sound practice to proactively and comprehensively improve signal timing. The outcome of properly training staff and proactively operating and maintaining traffic signals is signal timing that reduces congestion and fuel consumption ultimately improving our quality of life and the air we breathe. This manual provides an easy-to-use concise, practical and modular guide on signal timing. The elements of signal timing from policy and funding considerations to timing plan development, assessment, and maintenance are covered in the manual. The manual is the culmination of research into practices across North America and serves as a reference for a range of practitioners, from those involved in the day to day management, operation and maintenance of traffic signals to those that plan, design, operate and maintain these systems.

Book Development of a Platoon priority Control Strategy With out Smart Advance Warning Flashers for Isolated Intersections with High speed Approaches

Download or read book Development of a Platoon priority Control Strategy With out Smart Advance Warning Flashers for Isolated Intersections with High speed Approaches written by Henry Liu and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the rural or suburban high-speed isolated intersections have higher traffic volumes on the major approach compared to the minor approach. The vehicle platoons on major approach are often forced to stop frequently due to conflicting calls placed by few vehicles on the minor approach. To overcome this issue, platoon-priority signal control systems have been developed to progress platoons efficiently at these intersections in a number of previous studies. In addition, Advance Warning Flashers (AWF) are used at these intersections to provide advance warning of end of green to the motorists. The conventional method uses trailing overlap green which holds the green for a fixed time after gap-out. This trailing overlap green replaces the existing dilemma-zone protection provided by loop detectors and also increases delay on the minor approach. Recently, Advance Warning of End of Green System (AWEGS) has been developed to provide advance warning at these intersections without having to hold green after gap-out. The purpose of this research study is to develop and evaluate the benefits of an integrated system which provides platoon-priority, advance warning of end-of-green, and also dilemma-zone protection at the end-of-green for rural high-speed isolated intersections. Cabinet-in the-loop tests were performed using a real world scenario. These study results showed 50 percent reduction in delay and stops on the major approach with platoons. It was found that the total intersection delay and stops were reduced by as much as 20 percent. The system was also successful in providing advance warning to the motorists by predicting gap-outs 7 to 8 seconds earlier in the majority of the cases.
