Book Achieving Justice

Download or read book Achieving Justice written by Toril Aalberg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-03-17 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a systematic and extensive comparative analysis of public beliefs about social justice. Contrary to previous studies it attempts to link public opinion to the philosophical debate on distributive justice, but more importantly it connects the different opinion surveys with the current economic and political situation in the various countries. What can explain the cross-national variations, and if opinions do change over time, why is this so? Are people’s beliefs influenced by existing welfare practices in the country? Do different policy regimes trigger different pattern of belief among the members of society? This book should be of interest to researchers and students both in the field of Comparative Opinion Studies, but also those interested in the relationship between public opinion and the political elite.

Download or read book Time Matters written by Andrew Abbott and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-07-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do variables really tell us? When exactly do inventions occur? Why do we always miss turning points as they transpire? When does what doesn't happen mean as much, if not more, than what does? Andrew Abbott considers these fascinating questions in Time Matters, a diverse series of essays that constitutes the most extensive analysis of temporality in social science today. Ranging from abstract theoretical reflection to pointed methodological critique, Abbott demonstrates the inevitably theoretical character of any methodology. Time Matters focuses particularly on questions of time, events, and causality. Abbott grounds each essay in straightforward examinations of actual social scientific analyses. Throughout, he demonstrates the crucial assumptions we make about causes and events, about actors and interaction and about time and meaning every time we employ methods of social analysis, whether in academic disciplines, market research, public opinion polling, or even evaluation research. Turning current assumptions on their heads, Abbott not only outlines the theoretical orthodoxies of empirical social science, he sketches new alternatives, laying down foundations for a new body of social theory.

Book Cross National Public Opinion about Homosexuality

Download or read book Cross National Public Opinion about Homosexuality written by Amy Adamczyk and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public opinion about homosexuality varies substantially around the world. While residents in some nations have embraced gay rights as human rights, people in many other countries find homosexuality unacceptable. What creates such big differences in attitudes? This book shows that cross-national differences in opinion can be explained by the strength of democratic institutions, the level of economic development, and the religious context of the places where people live. Amy Adamczyk uses survey data from almost ninety societies, case studies of various countries, content analysis of newspaper articles, and in-depth interviews to examine how demographic and individual characteristics influence acceptance of homosexuality.

Book Indiana in Decision

Download or read book Indiana in Decision written by Mark Akers and published by University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-25 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indiana is at an economic crossroads. Its history and culture do not embrace change, yet its economy is heavily tied to manufacturing and exportsAE"both of which are highly sensitive to the ever-changing global economy. The Hoosier state is aging and experiencing a brain drain from its universities. Its infrastructure needs repair and updating. And its public schools are average at a time when excellence is demanded. Indiana is at a point in its history when it must make decisions about the directions it will take in the future. Author Mark Akers examines the culture of Hoosiers and what makes them happy, the global economic forces that the state is facing, and describes those actions that state and local governments must implement to compete for economic growthAE"world-class infrastructure, the best education system anywhere, highly attractive cities and towns, meaningful incentives, and a stable, predictable, and helpful government. But even if these basic needs are addressed, can Indiana eventually prosper and develop a broad-based, innovative economy? Indiana (In)Decision describes IndianaAEs dilemma of indecisiveness at a time requiring rapid decision-making about its economic future. The book is meant for everyone, not just economists or academics.

Book Theory Based Data Analysis for the Social Sciences

Download or read book Theory Based Data Analysis for the Social Sciences written by Carol S. Aneshensel and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2013 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the elaboration model for the multivariate analysis of observational quantitative data. This model entails the systematic introduction of "third variables" to the analysis of a focal relationship between one independent and one dependent variable to ascertain whether an inference of causality is justified. Two complementary strategies are used: an exclusionary strategy that rules out alternative explanations such as spuriousness and redundancy with competing theories, and an inclusive strategy that connects the focal relationship to a network of other relationships, including the hypothesized causal mechanisms linking the focal independent variable to the focal dependent variable. The primary emphasis is on the translation of theory into a logical analytic strategy and the interpretation of results. The elaboration model is applied with case studies drawn from newly published research that serve as prototypes for aligning theory and the data analytic plan used to test it; these studies are drawn from a wide range of substantive topics in the social sciences, such as emotion management in the workplace, subjective age identification during the transition to adulthood, and the relationship between religious and paranormal beliefs. The second application of the elaboration model is in the form of original data analysis presented in two Analysis Journals that are integrated throughout the text and implement the full elaboration model. Using real data, not contrived examples, the text provides a step-by-step guide through the process of integrating theory with data analysis in order to arrive at meaningful answers to research questions.
