Book excerpt: An “engrossing” memoir of finding comfort, company—and mischief—at the famed Georgia retreat for children with polio (Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s Fresh Air). Just after her eleventh birthday, Susan Richards Shreve was sent to the Polio Foundation in Warm Springs, Georgia. Famously founded by Franklin Delano Roosevelt after he was disabled by the disease himself, the haven would be her home, off and on, for the next two years. In this piercingly honest memoir, Shreve recaptures her early adolescence, as well as an era of American life gripped by a fearful epidemic. At Warm Springs, Shreve found herself in a community of similarly afflicted children, and for the first time she was one of the gang. Away from her protective mother, she became a feisty troublemaker and an outspoken ringleader. She navigated first love, rocky friendships, religious questions, and family tensions—and experienced healing of all kinds. During her stay, the Salk vaccine would be discovered, ensuring that Shreve would be among the last Americans to have suffered childhood polio. “This sensitive, beautifully written memoir can stand on its own as a glimpse into an era of suffering, and as a testimony to the human spirit.” —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “Shreve succeeds at the difficult task of recapturing, and communicating, what it was like to be young.” —People “Part memoir, part confession, part mediation on both polio and the president who made it a national cause, Warm Springs unflinchingly illuminates an iconic moment in American history.” —O, The Oprah Magazine

Book The Vortex Made Me Do It

Download or read book The Vortex Made Me Do It written by Bill Effinger and published by . This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story of a city and its people, seemingly making a wrong turn on the road to a better life, and having to live it while hoping for change. The story reads like a B-Movie with high crime, political corruption, illicit sex and bank robberies, mixed with violence, mystery, myth and Indian lore. While laughable at times, the story profiles many of the people and the experiences associated with them, as abject lessons in perseverance, faith and determination in overcoming adversities in their city. Desert Hot Springs is a historical place in the Imperial Desert of California high above the Desert floor identified today as Coachella Valley. The area, once roamed by the Cahuilla and Agua Caliente Indians, became home to Cabot Yerxa, one of the Valley's earliest known settlers in 1913, whose adobe house still stands as a museum and monument to the pioneering spirit of America. According to public records, the local Chamber of Commerce and Mission Springs Water District, the area boasts some of the finest drinking water in the United States, and an abundance of underground mineral spring water rushing to the surface from 105 degrees to 125 degrees in 44 Boutique spas. It is also a place where local lore and some enthusiasts believe there is an "Energy Vortex" in the center of the city creating mystic powers for residents and visitors. Most early settlers of the area were homesteaders, who qualified and secured their 160-acre parcel ownership by constructing the required one-hundred square foot "home" as established by the Homestead Act of the U.S. Government and signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862. The law took effect on January 1, 1863. Now, the city within its boundaries is financially, and infrastructure challenged. There is a small but very active constituency of citizens working as volunteers on civic projects throughout the city, many of whom believe the "natural wonders" of the medicinal quality of "miracle hot spring waters"; the pure drinking water and the "Energy Vortex" will bring prosperity to the city. So far, this hasn't happened.

Book Warm Springs Millennium

Download or read book Warm Springs Millennium written by Michael Baughman and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established in 1855 on an area one-fifteenth the size of the lands relinquished in return for it, the Warm Springs Reservation in north central Oregon is home to some 3,600 Warm Springs, Wasco, and Paiute Indians, half of whom are under twenty. This book seeks to understand the reservation's inhabitants as a "viable people" who are both visible and vocal as they reflect on their daily lives, their struggles and successes, and their hopes for the future. Michael Baughman and Charlotte Hadella present extended interviews with seven Indian and two non-Indian members of the community. They discuss issues such as the difficulty of maintaining traditional lifeways centered around hunting, fishing, and gathering; the disruptions caused by alcoholism and diseases such as diabetes; and the need for culturally appropriate education for the young. The authors frame the interviews with explanatory material that covers the reservation's history and relations with white society and its efforts to transmit native languages and cultural traditions to its children.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of Ordinary Grace weaves a vivid and pulse-pounding thriller that follows Cork O’Connor’s search for a missing man amid the fraught tensions at the border between Arizona and Mexico. On the Fourth of July, just as fireworks are about to go off in Aurora, Minnesota, Cork O’Connor and his new bride Rainy Bisonette receive a desperate phone call from Rainy’s son, Peter. The connection is terrible but before the line goes dead, they hear Peter confess to the murder of someone named Rodriquez. The following morning, Cork and Rainy fly to southern Arizona, where Peter has been working as a counselor in a well-known drug rehab center. When they arrive, they learn that Peter was fired six months earlier and hasn’t been heard from since. So they head to the little desert town of Sulfur Springs where Peter has been receiving his mail. But no one in Sulfur Springs seems to know him. They do, however, seem to recognize the name Rodriguez. Apparently, the Rodriguez family is one of the cartels controlling everything illegal that crosses the border from Mexico. As they gather scraps of information about Peter, Cork and Rainy are warned time and again that there is a war going on along the border. “Trust no one in Coronado County,” is the most common piece of advice they receive, and Cork doesn’t have to be told twice. To him, Arizona is alien country. The relentless heat, the absence of water and big trees and shade all feel nightmarish to him, as does his growing sense that Rainy might know more about what’s going on than she’s willing to admit in this fresh, exhilarating, and white-knuckle mystery starring one of the greatest heroes of fiction.

Book A President in Our Midst

Download or read book A President in Our Midst written by Kaye Lanning Minchew and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited Georgia forty-one times between 1924 and 1945. This rich gathering of photographs and remembrances documents the vital role of Georgia’s people and places in FDR’s rise from his position as a despairing politician daunted by disease to his role as a revered leader who guided the country through its worst depression and a world war. A native New Yorker, FDR called Georgia his “other state.” Seeking relief from the devastating effects of polio, he was first drawn there by the reputed healing powers of the waters at Warm Springs. FDR immediately took to Georgia, and the attraction was mutual. Nearly two hundred photos show him working and convalescing at the Little White House, addressing crowds, sparring with reporters, visiting fellow polio patients, and touring the countryside. Quotes by Georgians from a variety of backgrounds hint at the countless lives he touched during his time in the state. In Georgia, away from the limelight, FDR became skilled at projecting strength while masking polio’s symptoms. Georgia was also his social laboratory, where he floated new ideas to the press and populace and tested economic recovery projects that were later rolled out nationally. Most important, FDR learned to love and respect common Americans—beginning with the farmers, teachers, maids, railroad workers, and others he met in Georgia.
