It includes occupations, both paid and volunteer, now open to women in war work, and the addresses to which application may be made for further information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women's Work in War Time AN power is rightly accounted one of the decisive elements in the world war. But Woman power also must be included in any survey of the myriad forces enlisted in the tremendous conflict. Such a war, summoning all the energies of nations, has revealed to the belligerent powers a huge reservoir of latent human energy in their women, and even their children. Woman in the harvest fields had before now been a common sight in Europe; but to-day her toil has been almost infinitely multiplied in amount, scope and in its sources of social origin. What Europe has achieved, and what mistakes Europe has made, are to-day Of keen interest to the employers Of America, now that we are ourselves in the war and are facing a steadily growing shortage Of labor. I regret that al though I received many invitations to visit universities and colleges, the only opportunities available were two fleeting visits to Princeton and Harvard, and a morning spent with the delightful Dean of Barnard College at Columbia. I shall always feel that I must return to America to make some study of her college life, especially as it affects women. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of a College During the War: Address at the Opening of the 118th Year of Middlebury College, September 20, 1917 But even if it were possible to divorce our thought from the stupendous events now occurring, and from the awakened passion of our nation to bear its part in the renovation of the world, it would not be patriotic for us to do so. As teachers and students we are still citizens, and even at the cost of considerable diversion from the educational endeavors which are our primary purpose, we must follow the course of the struggle, informing ourselves as best we may of the deeds of the armies and the fleets, and still more carefully seek ing to work our way through to the real issues of the conflict and the principles which are being fought out for the world to live by after the great horror has passed. College men and women should allow none to excel them in patriotism, nor in patriotic interest in the problems and endeavors of their country. Book Women and War in Antiquity

Download or read book Women and War in Antiquity written by Jacqueline Fabre-Serris and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in ancient Greece and Rome played a much more active role in battle than previously assumed. The martial virtues—courage, loyalty, cunning, and strength—were central to male identity in the ancient world, and antique literature is replete with depictions of men cultivating and exercising these virtues on the battlefield. In Women and War in Antiquity, sixteen scholars reexamine classical sources to uncover the complex but hitherto unexplored relationship between women and war in ancient Greece and Rome. They reveal that women played a much more active role in battle than previously assumed, embodying martial virtues in both real and mythological combat. The essays in the collection, taken from the first meeting of the European Research Network on Gender Studies in Antiquity, approach the topic from philological, historical, and material culture perspectives. The contributors examine discussions of women and war in works that span the ancient canon, from Homer’s epics and the major tragedies in Greece to Seneca’s stoic writings in first-century Rome. They consider a vast panorama of scenes in which women are portrayed as spectators, critics, victims, causes, and beneficiaries of war. This deft volume, which ultimately challenges the conventional scholarly opposition of standards of masculinity and femininity, will appeal to scholars and students of the classical world, European warfare, and gender studies.
