This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Story of the Canadian Army Medical Corps, Vol. 1 Such was the spirit of the Canadians in the battle line as I have seen and known them. One could not return from such a visit without renewed courage and strengthened determination. From the wounded in the hospitals one gained at least an equal inspiration in witnessing many a triumph of the Spirit over the dull pain and monotony of long, weary months. Let the Nation also give its tribute to those who consecrated their service to the care of the wounded to the men who went forward through the battle storm with bullet-spattered ambulances to rescue those who had fallen to the women whose first thought was of the helpless and suffering, when hospitals were bombed. It is fitting that the story of the Canadian Army Medical Service should be told; and no one is more qualified for that purpose, whether by experience, by service, or by the truest ideal of duty, than he who has written the pages that follow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Story of the Canadian Army Medical Corps, Vol. 1 To some the call of adventure, to others the fighting spirit of the race, but to most the duty of service appealed. Fresh from the avocations of peace and untrained at first in the art of war, they went forth strong, joyous, eager, confident. Valour and heroism were never more truly symbolized than in the story which their deeds have given to the world. Such was the spirit of the Canadians in the battle line as I have seen and known them. One could not return from such a visit without renewed courage and strengthened determination. From the wounded in the hospitals one gained at least an equal inspiration in witnessing many a triumph of the spirit over the dull pain and monotony of long, weary months. Download or read book Sister Soldiers of the Great War written by Cynthia Toman and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I am on night duty ... on what is supposed to be the ‘hopeless ward’ so you can imagine, or try to, just what I am doing. I know you cannot really have the faintest idea ...” In Sister Soldiers of the Great War, award-winning author Cynthia Toman recovers the long-lost history of Canada’s first women soldiers – nursing sisters who enlisted as officers with the Canadian Army Medical Corps. These experienced professional nurses left their friends, families, and jobs to enlist in the army. Granted relative rank and equal pay to men, they had a mandate to salvage as many sick and wounded men as possible for return to the front lines. Nothing prepared them for poor living conditions, the scale of casualties, or the type of wounds they encountered, but their letters and diaries reveal that they were determined to soldier on under all circumstances while still “living as well as possible.”

Book Politics and the Canadian Army Medical Corps

Download or read book Politics and the Canadian Army Medical Corps written by Herbert A. Bruce and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Politics and the Canadian Army Medical Corps: A History of Intrigue After all wars it is customary to engage in stocktaking; to canvass the mistakes that were made as well as the results that were achieved. The custom is salutary. It would be the most obvious folly in any community to settle down complacently after a period of stress and tolerantly dismiss any sins of omission or commission that may have been committed, as but the evidences of a higher virtue. Peace is the time for the restoration of clear vision and the rectification of injustices perpetrated in the hurly-burly of war. Therefore no apology need be made for the man who with intimate knowledge of any phase of Canada's war effort brings the facts to the light of day. Book The Canadian Corps in World War I

Download or read book The Canadian Corps in World War I written by René Chartrand and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the organization, lists the units and illustrates the uniforms and equipment of the four Canadian divisions which earned an elite reputation on the Western Front in 1915-18. Canada's 600,000 troops of whom more than 66,000 died and nearly 150,000 were wounded represented an extraordinary contribution to the British Empire's struggle. On grim battlefields from the Ypres Salient to the Somme, and from their stunning victory at Vimy Ridge to the final triumphant 'Hundred Days' advance of autumn 1918, Canada's soldiers proved themselves to be a remarkable army in their own right, founding a national tradition.

Book excerpt: An Equal Burden forms the first scholarly study of the Army Medical Services in the First World War to focus on the roles and experiences of the men of the ranks of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). These men, through their work as stretcher bearers and orderlies, provided a range of labour, both physical and emotional, in aid of the sick and wounded. They were not professional medical caregivers, yet were called upon to provide medical care, however rudimentary; they served in uniform, under military discipline, yet were forbidden, as non-combatants, from carrying weapons. Their service as men in wartime, was thus unique. Structured both chronologically and thematically, this study examines both the work that RAMC rankers undertook and its importance to the running of the chain of medical evacuation. It additionally explores the gendered status of these men within the medical, military and cultural hierarchies of a society engaged in total war, locating their service within the context of that of doctors, female nurses and combatant servicemen. Through close readings of official documents, personal papers, and cultural representations, both verbal and visual, it argues that the ranks of the RAMC formed a space in which non-commissioned servicemen, through their many roles, defined and redefined medical caregiving as men's work in wartime.
