Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Personal Reminiscences of Army Life: A Paper Read Before the Missouri Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, March 5th, 1887 The attack on the Sixth Massachusetts at Baltimore, was an event of supreme importance in connection with the secession movement. Until that hour multitudes at the North had refused to be convinced that the conflict was inevitable, and few persons of mature years had considered the possibility of being personally called upon to bear arms. Bat the tidings of violence in the streets of Baltimore as they were flashed over the land, brought to every mind a conviction not only that war had actually commenced, but that at this juncture there rested upon each citizen a duty to his country which could only be discharged by personal service. Nowhere was the excitement more intense than in that city of central Massachusetts in which I was then residing. Many of her citizens were in the ranks of the famous Sixth; and while we waited with uncertainty for the list of casualities, not knowing what families would be plunged into mourning, the feeling grew and deepened. No battle in after years, with its long list of dead, wounded and missing, created so profound an impression as this comparatively bloodless affair. Download or read book The Civil War in Books written by David J. Eicher and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the assistance of several scholars, including James M. McPherson and Gary Gallagher, and a long-time specialist in Civil War books, Ralph Newman, David Eicher has selected for inclusion in The Civil War in Books the 1,100 most important books on the war. These are organized into categories as wide-ranging as "Battles and Campaigns," "Biographies, Memoirs, and Letters," "Unit Histories," and "General Works." The last of these includes volumes on black Americans and the war, battlefields, fiction, pictorial works, politics, prisons, railroads, and a host of other topics. Annotations are included for all entries in the work, which is presented in an oversized 8 1/2 x 11 inch volume in two-column format. Appendixes list "prolific" Civil War publishers and other Civil War bibliographies, and the works included in Eicher's mammoth undertaking are indexed by author or editor and by title. Gary Gallagher's foreword traces the development of Civil War bibliographies and declares that Eicher's annotation exceeds that of any previous comprehensive volume. The Civil War in Books, Gallagher believes, is "precisely the type of guide" that has been needed. The first full-scale, fully-annotated bibliography on the Civil War to appear in more than thirty years, Eicher's The Civil War in Books is a remarkable compendium of the best reading available about the worst conflict ever to strike the United States. The bibliography, the most valuable reference book on the subject since The Civil War Day by Day, will be essential for college and university libraries, dealers in rare and secondhand books, and Civil War buffs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of War History, 1861-1865, Vol. 1: Papers Read Before the Ohio Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, 1883-1886 I marched across the Carolinas, commanding the Third Division, Seventeenth Corps (general Leggett having been sent home from Pocotaligo by the surgeons, too ill to go on), and can tell somewhat about that. The two striking features of the campaign were, the way the army marched and the way it was supplied. I will not attempt to give a narrative of the campaign, but only some notes of marching and foraging. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: First in a trilogy—a study of the strategy, tactics, and rivalry between two leaders of the Army of the Potomac’s cavalry during the American Civil War. George Armstrong Custer’s career has attracted its fair share of coverage, but most Custer-related studies focus on his decision-making and actions to the exclusion of other important factors, including his relationships with his fellow officers. Custer developed his tactical philosophy within the politically ridden atmosphere of the Army of the Potomac’s Cavalry Corps. His relationship with his immediate superior, Wesley Merritt, was so acrimonious that even Custer’s wife Libbie described him as her husband’s “enemy.” The Boy Generals examines in detail the steadily deteriorating relationship of two cavalrymen with opposing tactical philosophies, and how this relationship affected events in the field. Custer was a hussar—a firm believer in the shock power of the mounted saber charge—while Merritt was a dragoon, his tactics rooted in the belief that the purpose of the horse was to transport the trooper to the battlefield, where he could fight dismounted with his carbine. With these diametrically opposed belief systems, it was inevitable that these officers would clash. What has often been described as a spirited rivalry was in fact something much darker, an association that moved from initial distaste to acrimony, and finally, outright insubordination on Custer’s part. Author Adolfo Ovies mined deeply official reports, regimental histories, and contemporary newspaper accounts, together with unpublished and little used primary sources of men who fought in their commands. This rich and satisfying study exposes the depths of one of the most dysfunctional and influential relationships in the Army of the Potomac and how it affected cavalry operations in the Eastern Theater. The Boy Generals will change the way Civil War readers think of the premier Union army’s mounted arm, as well as George Custer’s legacy. Praise for The Boy Generals “A grand effort . . . a “Must Read.” It will be a standard bearer; a marvelous book that should remain among the very best. . . . It will certainly grace my library.” —Frederic C. Wagner III, author of The Strategy of Defeat at the Little Big Horn “Well-written, thoroughly researched, and entertaining. This is one you cannot miss.” —Eric J. Wittenberg, award–winning author of “The Devil’s to Pay”: John Buford at Gettysburg: A History and Walking Tour

BY JAMES SPEED, * Late Attorney-General of the United States. Less than two years after the death of Mr. Lincoln, I gave a brief expression of my appreciation of his character. Then it was too soon for a general reception of his great and good qualities. I then said: "When passion shall have subsided, and calmness and quiet come--a period he was only permitted to see from Pisgah's height--the large measure of his wisdom will be acknowledged by all men." Since that time, twenty years have passed--passion has gone, quiet has come, and all men speak his praise. I believe that, in all the annals of our race, Abraham Lincoln is the finest example of an unknown man rising from obscurity and ascending to the loftiest heights of human grandeur. The conspicuous causes which produced this grand result were inborn strength, integrity of character, patriotic devotion, and the nurturing influences of a free country. At an early age, he began to show the superior endowments which made him a leader of men. In the rough scenes of backwoods life his companions made him umpire of their * Mr. Speed was a Third Class Member of the Ohio Comniandery. He read this sketch at the May meeting, a little less than two months before his death, which occurred June 25, 18S7. His intimate relations with Mr. Lincoln, as a member of his Cabinet, gives it peculiar interest.--R. H. sports, and called him " Honest Abe." At the age of twentythree, his comrades in the Black Hawk War made him captain. One of these comrades now lives in Louisville--the venerable lawyer, Isaac R. Greene. He loves to tell how Captain Lincoln was a leader among the soldiers in that campaign, and attracted all by his good sense, wit, and anecdote. I knew Mr. Lincoln when he visited...
