Book History of the War in the Peninsula under Napoleon

Download or read book History of the War in the Peninsula under Napoleon written by Général de Division Comte Maximilien Foy and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-18 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Maximilien Foy was a renowned and experienced French general with a long and distinguished career. An artilleryman like his master Napoleon , he fulfilled his duty to France despite disagreeing with Napoleon, and fought across Europe from Switzerland, Germany, Portugal and Spain. He spent a major part of his career fighting in the Peninsular armies at Busaco and with Masséna in Portugal. His military career came to an end after heroic fighting at Waterloo in 1815, after which he became involved in politics and writing. Foy set about writing a history of the Peninsular War, which had been covered in great detail by British and Spanish writers but not so well by those of France. Although his untimely death in 1825 cut short his endeavour to two books, they are a valuable addition to the literature on the period, filling the gap of a French perspective on the bloody “Spanish Ulcer”. Author — Général de Division Comte Maximilien Foy, 1775-1825. Editor —Élisabeth Augustine (née Daniels) Foy Translator — Anon Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in 1827, London, by Treuttel and Würtz Original Page Count – xii and 608 pages. Book Napoleon s Peninsular War

Download or read book Napoleon s Peninsular War written by Paul L Dawson and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned historian captures the French experience of the Peninsular War through soldiers’ unpublished memoirs and eyewitness accounts. While much has been written about the British campaigns of the Peninsular War, surprisingly little has been published in English on their opponents, the French. Now, using previously unseen material from the French army archives in Paris, Paul Dawson tells the story of the early years of the Peninsular War as never before. Eyewitness accounts of the Siege of Zaragoza and the Spanish defeats at Medellin and Ocaña are interspersed with details of campaign life and of struggling through the Galician mountains in pursuit of the British army. Dawson captures the perspectives of ordinary French soldiers and their beliefs about the war they were fighting for their Emperor. Napoleon’s Peninsular War is a vital and unprecedented addition to our understanding of the war in Iberia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoirs of British soldiers who fought in the Peninsular War are commonplace and histories of the momentous campaigns and battles of Sir John Moore and Sir Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington, can be numbered by the score. Yet surprisingly little has been published in English on their opponents, the French.Using previously unseen material from the French army archives in Paris, which includes numerous memoires that have not even been published in France, renowned historian Paul Dawson tells the story of the early years of the Peninsular War as never before.Eyewitness accounts of the horrific Siege of Zaragoza, in which more than 50,000 soldiers and civilians were killed defending the city, and of the cataclysmic Spanish defeats at Medellin and Ocaña are interspersed with details of campaign life in the Iberian Peninsula and of struggling through the Galician mountains in pursuit of the British army marching to Corunna. As well as the drama of the great battles and the ever-present fear of Spanish guerrillas - the knife in the back, the flash of steel in the dark - Paul Dawson draws on the writings of the French soldiers to examine the ordinary conscript's belief in the war they were fighting for their Emperor, Napoleon. In this much-needed study of the Peninsular War from the French perspective, Paul Dawson has produced an unprecedented, yet vital addition to our understanding of the war in Iberia. Napoleon's Peninsular War is destined to become one of the classic accounts of this turbulent, yet endlessly fascinating era.

Book excerpt: From 1808 to 1814, Spaniards waged a guerrilla war against the French Empire, turning Spain into a nightmare for Napoleon's armies and making the Peninsular War one of the most violent conflicts of the nineteenth century. In The Fatal Knot, John Tone recounts the events of this conflict from the perspective of the Spanish guerrillas, whose story has long been ignored in histories centered on Wellington and the French marshals. Focusing on the insurgent army of Francisco Espoz y Mina, Tone offers a new interpretation of the origins and motives of this first guerrilla force and describes the devastating impact of Mina's guerrillas on Napoleon's troops. Tone argues that traditional explanations for the guerrillas' resistance are inadequate. The insurgents were neither bandits in search of booty nor patriots fighting for king, country, and church. Rather, they were landowning peasants who fought to protect their own interests within the old regime in Navarre, a regime that was marked by something like a true "moral economy," reflected in the economic and institutional empowerment of the peasantry. It was this social order and the guerrilla movement it generated that constituted Napoleon's "fatal knot."
