Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It all begins with a train journey from London to a new life in the countryside for ten-year-old William and his widowed father, David. Life dealt the father-son team a bad blow with William’s mother dying tragically a couple of years before. David is intent on starting afresh by relocating to Poynton Green where the air is crisp and clean and trees laden with apples and bushes with wild berries. It’s not long before William makes firm friends with his next-door-neighbor Robin. The book endearingly draws us in with this soul-mate friendship. The cherry on top has to be David falling in love with Robin’s mother, Emma, and the two eventually marry, cementing this brotherly bond. Little does this unsuspecting new family know that their idyllic existence is about to be shattered. Tragedy strikes, and with it, a discovery will thrust the two stepbrothers into dimensions that will test their bond to the limit. At the crossroads of light and dark, William and Robin go in opposite directions. William journeys through the dimension of light on the back of Adriel, the eight-legged white horse with pointed horns. He meets Gabedier, the sickly green-skinned monster who seems to be a perambulating mass of wrinkles. Looks aren’t always as they seem though as Gabedier becomes one of Will’s strongest allies. In the real world, the brothers’ playacting of becoming legendary heroes and allies Robin Hood and Will Scarlett takes a nasty turn in the dimensions. Their commitment to each other faces the toughest test. William’s wooden sword has now transformed in a glinting white-light–refracting weapon of steel and good. Unbeknown to him, Robin has teamed up with Haggl the Evil, and his sword is as dark as William’s is light. In scenes that will have you holding your breath, William’s good is pitted against the evil of the swirling ethereal Draccofiends. These dangerous dark specters are intent on crushing anything virtuous. And they are about to gain a new commander whose new HQ is the Tower of Torment—none other than William’s soul mate Robin. Spurred on by the light dimension’s initiating mantra—“Welcome home, the chosen one, the choice you made is true. Walk wise under the golden sun, let goodness walk with you”—William has one mission, and that is to save Robin from the dark forces that have him in their evil clutches. This page-turner will leave you breathless and have you championing Will’s determination to fight for good over evil. His challenge is amplified when elements within his light dimension army turn their backs on him and edge toward the dark abyss. Eventually, the two dimensions come head-to-head, and it’s anyone’s guess who’ll emerge victorious. This fast-paced novel is a must read for its twists and turns and constant thrills.

Book excerpt: Its a story of a boy who finds a pair of antique eyeglasses. Despite the one of the lenses being missing, there's something about them which attracts the boy to them. He puts them on. The boy is transported to another realm. He finds he's holding the digital device in his hands, only now it is working. He sees a strange entity - a gigantic floating ghostly head - who asks him to make a choice; light or dark? Good or bad? The boy chooses light. He is transported to another afterlife realm, filled with good creatures. At first, he doesn't understand them. The digital device comes alive and attaches itself to the boy. He can then understand the language now. The boy travels through the afterlife realm, meeting creatures and helping them to solve their problems, such as finding entrances to pass through to other worlds to meet their living loved ones one last time. Along the way, now and then they are attacked by dark beings, which the boy helps them to defeat. The boy is happy there and years pass by. Cuts back to his friend in the attic. While years have passed for the boy in the afterlife realm, no time at all has passed in our world. The friend sees that the boy is frozen in place. No matter what he does to him, the boy won't move. The friend roots through the chest again and finally finds the missing lens. Jokingly, he balances it on his face over one of his eyes. He is sucked into the other realm, where he sees the same creature. It tells him that he has no choice. Light has already been chosen, so he has to be dark. The friend screams as he feels dark forces invade his body, turning him evil The friend is transported to a dark realm filled with demons and monsters. Using his dark abilities, he bullies and dominates the other monsters over a number of years, until he is able to control them. He unites them together, forming an army. Invasions into the light realm become more common, more organised and more dangerous. The boy learns that his friend has taken control of the dark realm and doesn't understand why. He could be a bit naughty now and then, but he wasn't evil! The boy unites various tribes of light creatures together, forming an army to resist the invasions by the dark army. One of the boy's friends tells him that he has discovered how the dark creatures are getting into the light realm; through a portal which leads into the dark realm. The boy decides that while the main army stays behind to defend against the dark invading forces, he will travel to the dark realm with a smaller group of heroes. They sneak and fight their way through the dark realm until they finally come face to face with the boy's friend. In the climactic battle, the boy's glasses are destroyed, as is the lens that the friend wears. They are thrown out of the afterlife realm and reappear in the attic, in their normal, child forms - the same age they were when this all began. The friend who was the dark one in that realm cries and apologies for everything he did - explaining that he had no choice and no control. The friends embrace. All is forgiven.

Book excerpt: A fascinating insight into the global battle for our energy future The global competition for scarce natural resources that pits the West against the super-hot economies of China and India, plus a clutch of other contenders including Russia, Brazil, and Indonesia, has become one of the biggest issues facing the world today. Whether it is the rare metal lithium found in salt pans in the Andes, gas from the Caspian Sea, oil off the coast of Brazil, coal from Africa's Zambezi River, or uranium from Kazakhstan, China and India are desperate to ensure the security of their future energy supplies. Written in clear, jargon-free language, it tells the global resources story in a fresh and engaging way that anyone can understand. Includes insightful, up-to-the-minute coverage of the most pressing debates over resource allocations Discusses the major Chinese and Indian businesses that are just becoming known to those in the West (Sinopec, CNOOC, CNPC, Indian Oil, ONGC, Reliance, Coal India, SAIL, and many others) Presents resource- and region-specific chapters to help readers view the pertinent issues from multiple angles As the economies of China and India grow to challenge those of the West, the battle over natural resources will continue to heat up. These wars would shape man's destiny and live on for centuries in legend, song and religious lore -- brutal and terrible conflicts that began lifetimes earlier on another planet. In the astonishing third volume of Zecharia Sitchin's The Earth Chronicles, the internationally renowned scholar parts the mists of myth and time to return to the violent beginnings of humanity -- employing ancient text, religious documents and archaeological findings to reconstruct epic events that support the existence of extraterrestrial "god" who once set nation against nation, army against army, and man against man.

Book excerpt: A deep exploration of the many possibilities inherent in linking Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy to contemporary science, John Protevi’s Life, War, Earth demonstrates how Deleuze’s ontology of the virtual, intensive, and actual can enhance our understanding of important issues in cognitive science, biology, and geography. Protevi illustrates how a Deleuzian approach can illuminate a wide range of concerns and subjects, including ancient and contemporary warfare, human individuation processes, the “granularity problem,” panpsychism, the E. coli bacterium, the assassination attempt on U.S. representative Gabrielle Giffords, and the affective dimensions of the Occupy movement. Frequently ambitious but always rooted in the empirical, Life, War, Earth shows how the social and the somatic are not opposed to each other but are interwoven on three time scales—the evolutionary, the developmental, and the behavioral—and on three political scales—the geopolitical, the bio-neuro-political, and the technopolitical. Deeply attuned to the internalities of the thought of Deleuze, the book offers a unique reading of his corpus and a useful method for applying Deleuzian techniques to the natural sciences, the social sciences, political phenomena, and contemporary events.

Book The Battle for Middle earth

Download or read book The Battle for Middle earth written by Fleming Rutledge and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004-11-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings has long been acknowledged as the gold standard for fantasy fiction, and the recent Oscar-winning movie trilogy has brought forth a whole new generation of fans. Many Tolkien enthusiasts, however, are not aware of the profoundly religious dimension of the great Ring saga. In The Battle for Middle-earth Fleming Rutledge employs a distinctive technique to uncover the theological currents that lie just under the surface of Tolkien's epic tale. Rutledge believes that the best way to understand this powerful "deep narrative" is to examine the story as it unfolds, preserving some of its original dramatic tension. This deep narrative has not previously been sufficiently analyzed or celebrated. Writing as an enthusiastic but careful reader, Rutledge draws on Tolkien's extensive correspondence to show how biblical and liturgical motifs shape the action. At the heart of the plot lies a rare glimpse of what human freedom really means within the Divine Plan of God. The Battle for Middle-earth surely will, as Rutledge hopes, "give pleasure to those who may already have detected the presence of the sub-narrative, and insight to those who may have missed it on first reading."
