Book excerpt: During the Second World War, Canadian factories produced mountains of munitions and supplies, including some 800 ships, 16,000 aircraft, 800,000 vehicles, and over 4.6 billion rounds of ammunition and artillery shells. However, the end of hostilities in 1945 turned the leftover assets into peacetime liabilities. Alex Souchen provides a definitive account of the disposal crisis triggered by Allied victory and shows how Canadians responded to the unprecedented divestment of public property by reusing and recycling military surpluses to improve their postwar lives. War Junk recounts the complex political, economic, social, and environmental legacies of munitions disposal in Canada by revealing how the tools of war became integral to the making of postwar Canada.

Book Archaeologies of Hitler s Arctic War

Download or read book Archaeologies of Hitler s Arctic War written by Oula Seitsonen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the archaeology and heritage of the German military presence in Finnish Lapland during the Second World War, framing this northern, overlooked WWII material legacy from the nearly forgotten Arctic front as ‘dark heritage’ – a concrete reminder of Finns siding with the Nazis, often seen as polluting ‘war junk’ that ruins the ‘pristine natural beauty’ of Lapland’s wilderness. The scholarship herein provides fresh perspectives to contemporary discussions on heritage perception and ownership, indigenous rights, community empowerment, relational ontologies and also the ongoing worldwide refugee crisis.

Book excerpt: Alexander the Great died in 323BC. There is some debate as to the lifetime of Sun Tzu. Ssu-ma Ch’ien’s Records of the Historian, completed sometime after 100BC, records that Sun Wu from the state of Chi completed his Art Of War at the end of the 6th Century BC. Chinese scholars have questioned this, and most agree it could not have been written this early. Samuel B Griffith’s studies suggest the 4th Century BC. Maspero believes it was written in the 3rd Century BC. I have used a later date to make this fictional work a clash between history’s greatest tactical genius and the supreme master of strategies. The use of 10,000 crossbowmen has been recorded by Chinese historians in the Battle of Ma iong in 341BC. King Wu ling made cavalry (along with trousers) part of his army in 320BC the warning states period in China dates from c543 to c221 BC.

Book Settlement Life and Politics Understanding the Traditional New Territories

Download or read book Settlement Life and Politics Understanding the Traditional New Territories written by Patrick H. Hase and published by City University of HK Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Without a clear idea of the history of the New Territories, the history of Hong Kong as a whole would be impossible to bring to any sort of satisfactory completion. ... Elucidating the development of a village, a clan, a temple, or a market-town is also, in and of itself, real and valuable history, and abundantly justifies the time and effort spent on it.” This book is a history of village communities in the New Territories of Hong Kong, including those in the areas of Ha Tsuen, Hung Shui Kiu, and Sha Tin as well as those on the islands of Lamma, Ma Wan, and Tung Ping Chau. Elaborating on primary interviews with village elders, government documents, and public information, this book places the individual histories of each area into the context of Hong Kong’s rich past. The introduction sets up the rest of the book, outlining common themes and highlighting the dangers of using the communal memories of village communities while, at the same time, showing the valuable information doing so can bring. Each chapter provides a more detailed account of one specific area, concentrating on the settlement history, the lifestyle, and the politics of that area.
