Book Just Another Day in Vietnam

Download or read book Just Another Day in Vietnam written by Keith M. Nightingale and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2019-10-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This military memoir examines one of the most vicious and tragically forgotten battles of the Vietnam War from a variety of perspectives. In June of 1967, the Viet Cong sought to isolate and destroy an elite South Vietnamese unit as part of a new offensive strategy. They sent a voluntary POW as an “informant” to dupe the 52nd Vietnamese Ranger Battalion into taking a dangerous position in the III Corps sector of South Vietnam. In the midst of an ambush, the members of the 52nd Ranger Battalion conducted themselves with great skill and valor. As one of those men, Keith Nightingale is uniquely suited to relate the events of that day. Based on firsthand experience as well as After Action Reports from a variety of sources, Just Another Day in Vietnam explores multiple perspectives, affording equal weight to ally and enemy alike. Nightingale offers rare insight into the often misunderstood role of the elite Vietnamese Ranger forces; the intelligence acquired from captured Rangers; and a rare eyewitness account to this fateful yet underexamined Vietnam battle.

At the age of 11, his father, Ray, purchased an old mail-route biplane, and within a year, Steve was soaring with the birds. It was an easy decision for Steve to join the Army Air Corps and pursue his desire to pilot the B-17 Flying Fortress.

In Another Day in the Death of America, award-winning journalist Gary Younge tells the stories of the lives lost during one such day. It could have been any day, but he chose November 23, 2013. Black, white, and Latino, aged nine to nineteen, they fell at sleepovers, on street corners, in stairwells, and on their own doorsteps. From the rural Midwest to the barrios of Texas, the narrative crisscrosses the country over a period of twenty-four hours to reveal the full human stories behind the gun-violence statistics and the brief mentions in local papers of lives lost. This powerful and moving work puts a human face-a child's face-on the "collateral damage" of gun deaths across the country. This is not a book about gun control, but about what happens in a country where it does not exist. What emerges in these pages is a searing and urgent portrait of youth, family, and firearms in America today.

Book An Eight Year Goodbye

Download or read book An Eight Year Goodbye written by Maryanne V. Scott and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Valenti was an unpretentious, humble man who required very little in life to make him happy. He grew up during the Great Depression, working on the family farm in New Jersey, growing tomatoes to sell to Campbell Soup Company. Seeing the Hindenburg fly over his farm, receiving visits to the farm from his cousin, Anne Bancroft, and serving his country in World War II were a few of the highlights of his young adult life that he spoke of often. However, marrying the love of his life and having his daughter and son were the basis of what sustained him every day as he lived the American dream of working hard and prospering. Life had always been wonderful for Sam until later in his life when he started to lose his precious memories and abilities to Alzheimer's disease. His slow cognitive decline lasted for eight long years with his children by his side, helping him to navigate through the stages of the disease. An Eight-Year Goodbye is the story of Sam's journey through this debilitating illness with some helpful suggestions from the author on how to handle some of the heartbreaking challenges that Alzheimer's presents. It is also a story of love and compassion as Sam's children watch their father go from the vital, independent, vibrant man that they grew up with to the feeble, confused man who was no longer able to communicate with his family. This story will touch the heart of anyone whose loved one has experienced or is experiencing the long, slow deterioration that Alzheimer's disease brings.

Book Just Another Day at the Office

Download or read book Just Another Day at the Office written by Robert Beath and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rambling, shambolic account of my life and career written as short storiessome rude, some funny, some tragic. I started this as an aid to my recovery from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in 2014 after a long period in hospital. I was very lucky after a week in a government mental ward to get accepted at Lakeside Clinic at Warners Bay Private Hospital, where I was treated with care and kindness and, for the first time in my life, learned something about my own emotions and to speak of thema very hard lesson to learn. Take my word, though, if you suffer PTSD or depressiondont let the hole get too deep. Talk to someone no matter how hard or how much it hurts; it is not just important to your well-being but of your family and friends as well. Some of my friends say I am a uniform collector, in my time being a scout, senior scout, cub instructor, soldier, police officer, special constable, MSS security officer, scout leader, volunteer firefighter, Atlanta Olympics security team officer, Sydney Olympics OVIP, Northern Agencies security officer, and lastly, a transit officer. Anyway, if you have gotten this far, I hope you enjoy the rest of this book.

Download or read book War Porn written by Roy Scranton and published by Soho Press. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “War porn,” n. Videos, images, and narratives featuring graphic violence, often brought back from combat zones, viewed voyeuristically or for emotional gratification. Such media are often presented and circulated without context, though they may be used as evidence of war crimes. War porn is also, in Roy Scranton’s searing debut novel, a metaphor for the experience of war in the age of the War on Terror, the fracturing and fragmentation of perspective, time, and self that afflicts soldiers and civilians alike, the global networks and face-to-face moments that suture our fragmented lives together. In War Porn three lives fit inside one another like nesting dolls: a restless young woman at an end-of-summer barbecue in Utah; an American soldier in occupied Baghdad; and Qasim al-Zabadi, an Iraqi math professor, who faces the US invasion of his country with fear, denial, and perseverance. As War Porn cuts from America to Iraq and back again, as home and hell merge, we come to see America through the eyes of the occupied, even as we see Qasim become a prisoner of the occupation. Through the looking glass of War Porn, Scranton reveals the fragile humanity that connects Americans and Iraqis, torturers and the tortured, victors and their victims.

After America entered the war in 1917, Virginians served in numerous military and civilian roles—Red Cross nurses, sailors, shipbuilders, pilots, stenographers and domestic gardeners. The author details the state’s manifold contributions to the war effort and presents a study of monuments erected after the war.
