Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Worcester in the War of the Rebellion The origin of this work may be stated in few words. In the early autumn of last year, I consulted several gentlemen of this city in relation to a history of Worcester during the late civil war. I found that, in the opinion of these gentlemen, some of whom were prominent as military veterans, such a work was very desirable; that it ought to he prepared immediately while the actors in the contest were alive to give correct information; and that all those who might be considered competent to do the work, were otherwise employed. Several were pleased to speak words of encouragement to me in relation to the undertaking. Having had some experience in writing local history, and finding pleasure in the employment, I concluded to begin the volume which is now completed. And I gratefully add that the gentlemen already referred to, and others with whom the preparation of this history has brought me into occasional intercourse, have constantly given me the favor of their encouragement, and when sought for, the aid of their suggestions. The design of the work is to give a complete history of Worcester in the war against the rebellion, from the beginning to the close. Such a history should include all that was done at home, as well as in the field, in aiding the general government to suppress the rebellion. Book Cromwell s Crowning Mercy

Download or read book Cromwell s Crowning Mercy written by Malcolm Atkin and published by Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here for the first time is a vivid, fully illustrated account of this most dramatic of Civil War battles, described by Cromwell as a 'crowning mercy'. It represented the crowning achievement of Cromwell's military career, and was a mercy in bringing to an end (bar a few ineffective plots and uprisings) the fighting of the Civil War. Using original sources and quoting extensively from the accounts of those who took part, the author explains the role of the local gentry in the war and the attitudes of the ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events. For the first time, there is also extensive discussion of the fate of the thousands of Scottish prisoners who faced transportation to the New World or the fens of East Anglia. Extensive appendices reproduce contemporary documents, making the book a valuable resource for further study. As a local study and as a dissection of a key event in the English Civil War, Malcolm Atkin's authoritative accounts will be essential reading for all those interested in the period.

Book Worcester in the War of the Revolution

Download or read book Worcester in the War of the Revolution written by Albert A. Lovell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Worcester in the War of the Revolution: Embracing the Acts of the Town From 1765 to 1783 Inclusive Perhaps it is unnecessary for the writer to state that this is an unpretentious work. He has endeavored to tell the story of Worcester in the Revolution, as much as possible, in the language of the men and documents of that time. He is well aware that some of the facts narrated have become twice told tales, but he flatters himself that by far the greater portion, which has heretofore lain buried in dusty nooks and corners, is now published for the first time. In these busy times, when the thoughts and energies of the people are directed in so great a degree to the pursuit of wealth, comfort and enjoyment, it cannot be otherwise than profitable to pause and look back upon the acts of those whose wisdom, foresight and self-denial, laid the foundations of that prosperity which we their descendants enjoy - to spend a while with them and catch the inspiration of liberty and freedom from a contemplation of their sacrifices and sufferings - that we be not degenerate sons of worthy sires. There is much material accessible for an exhaustive history of Worcester during this period of its existence, some of which is carefully preserved, some hidden in the rubbish of garrets and closets, soon to find its way to market at a pittance per pound; and other still floating down through the closing years of a century in tradition, soon to be lost in distance, and buried in oblivion. Worcester has a revolutionary history to which her sons may point with pride; and "by honoring the parent, the child honors himself."
