Book St Lawrence County in the War of 1812

Download or read book St Lawrence County in the War of 1812 written by John M. Austin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fledgling United States struggled to keep its freedom from Great Britain during the War of 1812, but St. Lawrence County in upstate New York played a divided role. The region shared a border--as well as close personal and business associations--with British Canada and opposed the American embargo that disrupted these relationships. While some St. Lawrence men fought bravely for America, smuggling was a common way of life. Several small battles and skirmishes took place along the river, and a local merchant even influenced President Madison's decision-making. Local historian John Austin recounts these and other events, as well as the fascinating North Country characters who influenced them, in this book on St. Lawrence County in the War of 1812.

Book The History of Canada Series War in the St Lawrence

Download or read book The History of Canada Series War in the St Lawrence written by Roger Sarty and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1942 to 1944, 15 German submarines destroyed or severely damaged 27 ships, including three Canadian warships, a U.S. Army troop transport, and the Newfoundland ferry Caribou. More than 250 lives were lost. It was the only battle of the twentieth century to take place within Canada’s boundaries, and the only battle to be fought almost exclusively by Canadian forces under Canadian, rather than alliance, high command. And for more than 40 years the battle was characterized as a Canadian defeat. But was it a defeat? Drawing on new material from wartime records—including ultra-top-secret Allied decryptions of German naval radio communications, Roger Sarty shows that Canada mounted a successful defence with far fewer resources and in the face of much greater challenges than previously known. He draws vivid pictures of the intense combat on Canada’s shores and the interplay of the St Lawrence battle with war politics in Ottawa, Washington and London. At the same time, he weaves a second story: how researchers reassembled the scattered war records in Canada, Britain, the United States and Germany and brought the long-forgotten battle to life for new generations of Canadians and international audiences.

This book was released on 2009-07-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of a century-long dream to link the Great Lakes interior industrial hubs to the Atlantic Ocean, the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project stands as one of the largest and most important public works initiatives of the twentieth century. Seen as vital to North American commerce and strategic in advancing America’s position on the world stage, the billion-dollar seaway and power dam were also a phenomenal feat of engineering, involving an unprecedented level of cooperation between Canadian and American agencies and the unrelenting efforts of workers on both sides of the border. Dubbed the greatest construction show on earth, the largest waterway and hydro dam project ever jointly built by two nations consisted of seven locks, the widening of various canals, the taming of rapids, and the erection of the 3,216-foot-long, 195.5-foot-high Robert Moses–Robert H. Saunders Power Dam. In this book, Claire Puccia Parham reveals the human side of the project in the words of its engineers, laborers, and carpenters. Drawing on firsthand accounts, she provides a vivid portrait of the lives of the men who built the seaway and the women who accompanied them. This book is a fitting tribute to the hard work and dedication of the project’s 22,000 workers.

Download or read book Akuzilleput Igaqullghet written by Arctic Studies Center (National Museum of Natural History) and published by Washington, D.C. : Arctic Studies Center, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2002 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Alaskan community of Kingigin (population 165), also known as Wales, more than seventy-five indigenous terms for types of sea ice and ice conditions were recorded in 2007–2008 in the local Kingikmiut dialect of the Inupiaq language. In addition, over 30 terms were collected for various biological and cultural realities associated with the sea ice and ice hunting. Winton Weaypuk, Jr., a boat captain and a speaker of the Kingikmiut dialect, led the effort to collect local ice terms, documented elders’ knowledge about ice, and took over 100 photos of various ice-related activities in the Wales area, as illustrations to the dictionary. Collecting indigenous words for sea ice in Wales was a part of the SIKU (Sea Ice Knowledge and Use) international project. For the SIKU project, over 30 local ice vocabularies were collected in indigenous communities in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka, Russia. The Wales Inupiaq Sea Ice Dictionary is the first to be published in full, with comments and illustrations. Special sections in the book written by project participants (Weyapuk, Krupnik, Anungazuk, Eicken, and Druckenmiller) tell how the Kingikmiut ice ‘dictionary’ was prepared; how indigenous sea ice nomenclatures can be analyzed, and what we learned from compiling indigenous terms for ice in Wales, Alaska and beyond. The book is also illustrated by historical black-and-white photographs taken in Wales in 1922 by biologist Alfred M. Bailey, now in the collection of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Bailey’s photos with comments by today’s experts show how the environment and people’s life in Wales have changed over the past eighty years. Traditional words for ice, illustrations of local ice forms, Inupiaq explanations and English translations of ice types and conditions presented in the book will be of help to Wales students, educators, young hunters, so that the knowledge possessed by elders is preserved for future generations. Inupiaq knowledge about sea ice environment is also an insightful window to polar scientists, students, educators, and media specialists into indigenous people’s vision of Arctic climate change.
