Book excerpt: 2017 Jordan Schnitzer Book Award in Jewish Literature and Linguistics Honorable Mention, 2016 Baron Book Prize presented by AAJR A monster tour of the Golem narrative across various cultural and historical landscapes In the 1910s and 1920s, a “golem cult” swept across Europe and the U.S., later surfacing in Israel. Why did this story of a powerful clay monster molded and animated by a rabbi to protect his community become so popular and pervasive? The golem has appeared in a remarkable range of popular media: from the Yiddish theater to American comic books, from German silent film to Quentin Tarantino movies. This book showcases how the golem was remolded, throughout the war-torn twentieth century, as a muscular protector, injured combatant, and even murderous avenger. This evolution of the golem narrative is made comprehensible by, and also helps us to better understand, one of the defining aspects of the last one hundred years: mass warfare and its ancillary technologies. In the twentieth century the golem became a figure of war. It represented the chaos of warfare, the automation of war technologies, and the devastation wrought upon soldiers’ bodies and psyches. Golem: Modern Wars and Their Monsters draws on some of the most popular and significant renditions of this story in order to unravel the paradoxical coincidence of wartime destruction and the fantasy of artificial creation. Due to its aggressive and rebellious sides, the golem became a means for reflection about how technological progress has altered human lives, as well as an avenue for experimentation with the media and art forms capable of expressing the monstrosity of war.

Book excerpt: The rules have changed. For everyone. Traveling through the wormhole exposes Altin, Orli, and the Glistening Lady’s crew to the threat of the new race of aliens, known simply as Jellies. The Jellies hold power far greater than any force the people of Earth, Prosperion, or their two Hostile allies, Blue Fire and Yellow Fire, have encountered before. Making matters worse, with the War Queen deposed, the Marchioness has placed herself on the throne. The usurper thrives in the ensuing chaos, and she profits greatly from the war between the NTA and Mexico on Earth—all while calling herself neutral and funneling power from Prosperion’s magic guilds to her loyal servants Black Sander and Ivan Gangue. She will soon be the most powerful human amongst the stars. And who is there to oppose her? Pernie is stuck on Earth, and even with the help of her friend Jeremy, she is still subject to an oppressively inquisitive NTA. And Altin and Orli can't help on Prosperion unless Roberto and his crew can get them back from the Jellies, who dominate the stars beyond the wormhole. Alien Outcomes is the ultimate battle of good and evil, where the strength of truth, love, and civility clash with the power of brute force, domination, and lies. In a universe where ideologies are mere words on scrolls or computer screens, such distinctions get lost in the fog of war. Can there really be a “winner” at all? Alien Outcomes is book 6 of the Galactic Mage Series. It is the third book of the second trilogy, bringing the main series storyline to a close. More books may follow, but the original concept is now complete.

Download or read book Bardson Wolfe written by James Blackthorne and published by James Kieley . This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author James Blackthorne portrays his characters as having a strong fighting spirit. The main emphasis is on a character referred to as Bardson Wolfe. He is the son of the grand wizard Leon Davith. Bard is a Glorious Golum that faces overwhelming odds in this well-placed adventure. The bronze Golum remains true to his ideals and takes a firm commitment to his father despite every setback. Leon returned to the room with the large mirror. The pen was still lying on the desk. He sat down with his son Bard and explained how generations upon generations born into the Black Army culture, rose to die. None questioned it, none cared, and their culture was founded around the ideal of slaughter, of merciless battle. They knew nothing of cities, save for the ones they razed, and when none would challenge or oppose them in their great power, they would challenge themselves, battling their own ranks for the sake of maintaining the slaughter. Eventually this self-sustaining death machine, this device of war, mutated into the ones that were known today as the Black Army The Army was the result of the chaotic masses suddenly coming. Some called them the black ones, others, Shadow lords. None dared to call them a friend. It was here that battle was fought daily, not for the sake of any ideal or concept, but due to the sheer boredom the armies had amassed for many ages, long since born into the culture of war, a civilization forged from death. new lord was proclaimed. A far more savage, brutal, and intelligent lord than the Black Army could have ever hoped for. And this new high general began creating a bastion for the otherwise vagrant army of darkness, and once it had been devised, he took a name fitting his status and power. Malakaezar the Black Dragon, head of the army of darkness. But he wasn't content to merely let his army settle into the Dark Continent as his predecessor had, and hungrily, this rogue turned his gaze to the lands beyond, licking his lips at the unfazed lands just Bardson Wolfe the high golem was up to. Screaming as those heads fell over them, the black warriors perished then and there at the hands of the Sarganatas Hydra, a horrific monster that planted itself into the ground, waiting for prey to come to it. Born to destroy, born to kill, raised from the youngest available age to kill or be killed, to devote oneself to senseless bloodshed. And no god could hold sway over their hearts. They knew, for many were those who had been attacked by divine magic intended to sway their hearts away from what the majority of the warriors considered to be their true purpose. However, to a black warrior, such as divine magic was simply considered a jest, for gods could never exist within their hearts. They were immune to holy intervention, though it had been tried many times. Most, if not all the warriors were so resilient to divine magic and spells that a single warrior could weather out a smite spell, considered to be the strongest of Divine Magic because the God connected to it was the one attacking.

Download or read book THE WITCH written by Onur DİLER and published by Mavi Su Uzak Düşler Atölyesi. This book was released on with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great war had almost obliterated civilization. Dead lands, uninhabitable cities, poisonous lakes and seas... Humanity, aiming to cover the planet, had been reduced to a few city-states. A handful of states with delicate, fragile connections to each other... Each city-state blamed the other for the war, and each city had different stories about the war. Some believed in a power of magic that destroyed their planets, some blamed technology, and others believed in demons and creatures summoned from hell by priests. In the sky city of Atlas, Magic and Witchcraft were among the unforgivable sins. Those who had participated in the war and performed their duties properly could live freely in this city. Demons, vampires, or creatures summoned from other realms... The Church and the elected government ruling the city had always been lenient on this matter. Only magic and witchcraft... This was unacceptable. The Inquisition's only punishment on this matter was to burn Witches and Wizards until they turned to ashes. Because it was the Witches and Wizards who initiated the great war, almost causing humanity to be wiped out from the face of the Earth. At least, this is what Samara J. Silverwood, who had grown up with what the system taught her, thought. The teenage girl, with very little time left until her adolescence, was about to learn that everything she knew was actually very different. She is a Witch, an Inquisition Hunter, a Remnant Soldier, and the complex story of a family. Hello; If you enjoyed this adventure, you can find the rest by searching for Onur Diler in the search bar. The Arch Wizard regards his protégé as his greatest creation. The bronze Golem pays homage to his father. Even thus, the true hero of the story hurdles from one escapade to the next hoping to solve the world's evils. The crystal swallowing Golem was waist-deep in peril. Even so, the warrior travels in the fellowship of an enchanting Wizard-ess called Quill who was capable of casting spells adept at making love with her eyes. In the process, Bard exercises self-control even then; the prudent warrior comes to grips with his plights even though facing incredible odds. Currently, Leon Davith suffered from a stroke of hard luck that was the ultimate cause of dissatisfaction; he claimed his suffering was the outcome of a bad heart torpid liver, including gallstones combined with financial insolvency. However, with all that happened, he realized that whatever illness or misfortune can be tolerated by most individuals with some degree of submission providing the victim's ailments are not affected by the supernatural. Leon by all odds was a strong case; never at any time did anyone hear so much as a whine. Even so, his fears were unfounded of course, only a few of his gifted associates could predict the future or read into a crystal ball. When Leon reached the bottom of the stairs, he heaved his own sigh. A sigh of relief. Consequently, his esoteric knowledge of this fact eased his conscience somewhat. In the meantime, Leon frequented a secluded spot in his castle, to study the art of magic along with its effects. Leon stated. "Love is born when a man finally escapes the age long prison of himself." After his statement, the Grand Wizard let his demands for secrecy be known throughout his fortress. Leon reasoned what his companions didn't know, couldn't spill from their mouths. Could this passionate and determined Magician fill his role as a dedicated Warrior and Father?
