Book excerpt: Excerpt from War, Famine and Our Food Supply IN the following Introductory remarks I have given a bare outline of the suggestion - for it is nothing more - which I have endeavoured to formulate more fully in the succeeding chapters. The Standard and other papers when noticing my article on Corn Stores for War Time, in the Nineteenth Century for February, 1896, said it was a result of the recent threats of war from America and Germany. Book Food Supplies in Peace and War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Food Supplies in Peace and War Classic Reprint written by Sir Robert Henry Rew and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food Supplies in Peace and War To my old friend, and sometime colleague, Major Craigie, C. B., I inscribe this book, knowing that in him it will find one sympathetic reader. My interest in food supply statistics, and in agricultural economics generally, extends over nearly forty years, and it has been my good fortune to have opportunities of continuing, and, in some degree, supplementing the pioneer work in this field, for which Major Craigie's name is known throughout the world. The influence which, mainly on his initiative, the International Statistical Institute exercised in formulating general principles for the collection of statistics of agricultural production has been, in more recent years, reinforced by the specialised and systematic work of the International Agricultural Institute. There still remain many gaps to be filled and many defects to be remedied before statistics of the world's food supplies attain completeness. Download or read book Food Guide for War Service at Home written by Herbert Hoover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food Guide for War Service at Home: Prepared Under the Direction of the United States Food Administration in Co-Operation With the United States Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Education In the spring of 1918 the Collegiate Section of the United States Food Administration was called upon to prepare a simple statement of the food situation as affected by the war, suitable for elementary and high school teachers, high-school pupils, and the general public. The demand arose because of the wide adaptation of the three courses on this subject then being sent out weekly to universities, colleges, and normal schools throughout the country. This little volume is the response to the request. It was written by Katharine Blunt, of the University of Chicago, Frances L. Swim, of the Chicago Normal School, and Florence Powdermaker, of the United States Department of Agriculture. The records of the Food Administration have been open to the writers and they have had the advice and criticism of its officials and specialists. No effort has been spared to secure accuracy of statement in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Agriculture and Food Supply in France During the War Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture and Food Supply in France During the War IN the autumn of 1914, when the scientific study of the effects of war upon modern life passed suddenly from theory to history, the Division Of Economics and History of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace proposed to adjust the program of its re searches to the new and altered problems which the war presented. The existing program, which had been prepared as the result of a conference of economists held at Berne in 1911, and which dealt with the facts then at hand, had just begun to show the quality of its contributions; but for many reasons it could no longer be fol lowed out. A plan was therefore drawn up at the request of the Director of the Division, in which it was proposed, by means Of an historical survey, to attempt to measure the economic cost of the war and the displacement which it was causing in the processes of civilization. Such an 'economic and Social History Of the World War, ' it was felt, if undertaken by men of judicial temper and ade quate training, might ultimately, by reason of its scientific Obliga tions to truth, furnish data for the forming Of sound public opinion, and thus contribute fundamentally toward the aims of an institu tion dedicated to the cause Of international peace. Download or read book Hunger and War written by Wendy Z. Goldman and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on recently released Soviet archival materials, Hunger and War investigates state food supply policy and its impact on Soviet society during World War II. It explores the role of the state in provisioning the urban population, particularly workers, with food; feeding the Red army; the medicalization of hunger; hunger in blockaded Leningrad; and civilian mortality from hunger and malnutrition in other home front industrial regions. New research reported here challenges and complicates many of the narratives and counter-narratives about the war. The authors engage such difficult subjects as starvation mortality, bitterness over privation and inequalities in provisioning, and conflicts among state organizations. At the same time, they recognize the considerable role played by the Soviet state in organizing supplies of food to adequately support the military effort and defense production and in developing policies that promoted social stability amid upheaval. The book makes a significant contribution to scholarship on the Soviet population's experience of World War II as well as to studies of war and famine.

Book Famine and Food Supply in the Graeco Roman World

Download or read book Famine and Food Supply in the Graeco Roman World written by Peter Garnsey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length study of famine in antiquity. The study provides detailed case studies of Athens and Rome, the best known states of antiquity, but also illuminates the institutional response to food crisis in the mass of ordinary cities in the Mediterranean world. Ancient historians have generally shown little interest in investigating the material base of the unique civilisations of the Graeco-Roman world, and have left unexplored the role of the food supply in framing the central institutions and practices of ancient society.
