Book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet May 1942

Download or read book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet May 1942 written by Usnavy and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a modified version of the original May, 1942, Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Fleet War Diary. May, 1942 - May continues the format from April, with the daily "Narrative", "Daily Distribution of Operating Forces", "Current Movements of Naval Units", and "War Plans - Daily Summary". Readers of the previous volumes are aware that the CinCPac War Diary is not an in-depth chronical of battle, as, for instance, the minimal information about the actual Battle of the Coral Sea confirms. What the War Diary does give is a detailed list of the ships participating and how they were organized. Due to distance and limited communications, even this information is not always 100% up to date, or 100% accurate (LEXINGTON lingered under the Task Force 11 heading for five days after she was sunk on May 8; she, and Task Force 11, were not removed from the diary until May 13). NOTE: This document has been altered from the original for publishing and readability purposes. Individual redundant page headings have been deleted. Empty page space has been removed. Typos have been corrected and inconsistencies eliminated. Geographical misspellings have not been changed. Select words in all-uppercase have been replaced with conventional lower case. Other than the above revisions, this is the original CinCPac War Diary, as submitted to the Chief of Naval Operations. The War Diaries were compiled to chronicle the daily operations of the ships and commands of the U.S. Navy. This was done for contemporary analysis and as a historical record.

During almost three years of battle in the Pacific Ocean, he defied Navy rules against keeping a diary by writing copious notes on loose sheets of paper that appeared to anyone watching to be ordinary let

Book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet June 1942

Download or read book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet June 1942 written by Usnavy and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a modified version of the June 1942 Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Fleet War Diary. This month continues the format from May: the daily "Narrative", "Daily Distribution of Operating Forces", "Current Movements of Naval Units", and "War Plans - Daily Summary". The last week of June is a bit of a muddle, with sections missing or duplicated. Spruance took over as CinCPac Chief of Staff on June 23, so this might be a byproduct of the administrative change. Also at this time the daily intelligence reports are included in the War Diary, though again this is done in a somewhat random and haphazard manner. This document has been altered from the original for publishing and readability purposes. Individual redundant page headings have been deleted. Empty page space has been removed. Typos have been corrected and inconsistencies eliminated. Geographical misspellings have not been changed. Select words in all-uppercase have been replaced with conventional lower case. Book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet April 1942

Download or read book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet April 1942 written by Usnavy and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a modified version of the original April, 1942, Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Fleet War Diary. Beginning in April, Enclosures are no longer included in the CinCPac War Diary. All War Diaries are now submitted separately. Also in April CinCPac became an expanded command which encompassed all military forces in the Central, South, and North Pacific - this command was called Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas (CinC-POA). However at that time, the War Diary was still listed as that of CinCPac. One casualty of this change is the comprehensive "Summary of the Situation" outline format that had been in use, with minor changes, since January 1, 1942. It was replaced with an abbreviated 10-point outline form. While the previous Summary of the Situation and the current Daily Distribution of Operating Forces had at times been redundant, they had complemented each other. The new form is more streamlined (albeit less detailed), and makes the Daily Distribution of Operating Forces the War Diary's center-piece.

Book Witness to Neptune s Inferno

Download or read book Witness to Neptune s Inferno written by David F. Winkler and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...richly describes so many timeless, classical, and archetypal aspects of war that anyone from the Napoleonic soldier to the Iraq War veteran could probably identify and relate to them." — Military Review 1942 would prove crucial for the United States in the Pacific following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and a series of setbacks in the Southwest. As the first ship commissioned following America’s entry into World War II, the light cruiser USS Atlanta would be thrust into the Pacific fight, joining the fleet in time for the pivotal battle of Midway and on to the Guadalcanal campaign in the Southwest Pacific. Embarked was an exceptionally astute observer, Lieutenant Commander Lloyd M. Mustin, who faithfully recorded his thoughts on the conflict in a standard canvas-covered logbook. Diaries were not supposed to be kept by those serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and for good reason. If recovered by the Japanese, they would likely have revealed that the Japanese code had been broken prior to the battle of Midway. Thus, Mustin’s diary is a rare day-to-day accounting of the Pacific from a very opinionated mid-grade officer. Beginning with the commissioning of Atlanta at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Christmas Eve 1941, Mustin covers the ship’s workups and her deployment to the Pacific in time for the battle of Midway. It’s then on to the Southwest Pacific, where the ship first engages enemy aircraft at the battle of the Eastern Solomons in late August 1942. Mustin’s final entry covers the battle of Santa Cruz in late October 1942. The story is completed by an account of the battle of Guadalcanal and beyond, drawing upon Mustin’s oral history. This is a valuable document, fully interpreted to provide a better understanding of the Pacific War during that critical year.

This book was released on 2011-11-14 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Northern California Book Award for Nonfiction "Both a serious work of history…and a marvelously readable dramatic narrative." —San Francisco Chronicle On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss, a blow that destroyed the offensive power of their fleet. Pacific Crucible—through a dramatic narrative relying predominantly on primary sources and eyewitness accounts of heroism and sacrifice from both navies—tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history to seize the strategic initiative.

Book excerpt: The “remarkable” New York Times bestseller about the battle in the Pacific that turned the tide of World War II—from the author of The Miracle of Dunkirk (Los Angeles Times). On the morning of June 4, 1942, doom sailed on Midway. Hoping to put itself within striking distance of Hawaii and California, the Japanese navy planned an ambush that would obliterate the remnants of the American Pacific fleet. On paper, the Americans had no chance of winning. They had fewer ships, slower fighters, and almost no battle experience. But because their codebreakers knew what was coming, the American navy was able to prepare an ambush of its own. Over two days of savage battle, American sailors and pilots broke the spine of the Japanese war machine. The United States prevailed against momentous odds; never again did Japan advance. In stunning detail, Walter Lord, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Day of Infamy and A Night to Remember, tells the story of one of the greatest upsets in naval history. “Graphic and realistic . . . not an impersonalized account of moves on the chessboard of war, [but] a story of individual people facing crucial problems.” —The New York Times

Book USS Hazelwood Dd531 War Diary June 1943 Sept 1945

Download or read book USS Hazelwood Dd531 War Diary June 1943 Sept 1945 written by Usnavy and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: USS HAZELWOOD (DD531), a FLETCHER-class destroyer named for Commodore John Hazelwood (1726-1800), served from June 1943 to January 1946 as a part of the United States Pacific Fleet. During her active World War II service she participated in every key U.S. Navy operation except for the Marianas landing in June-July 1944. Her war ended on April 29, 1945 when she was struck by a Japanese suicide plane. 77 members of the crew were killed, including the captain and executive officer. However, she survived, eventually steaming under her own power to San Francisco where she was rebuilt and overhauled. By the time this work was completed, the war had ended. She was transferred to San Diego and placed into the Reserve Fleet. Recommissioned in 1951, she served until 1965 when she was decommissioned for the last time. The War Diary that follows covers only her time during World War II, June 1943 through September 1945. For readers unfamiliar with the war diaries, these documents are not the detailed thoughts of individual officers or crew members; they are the basic day-to-day operations of a ship during wartime. For those desiring a story, or fleshed-out narrative, I'm afraid you must look elsewhere. The war diary does provide a solid foundation upon which to build, as they show where the ship was on a daily basis, and list the most pertinent happenings of a given day. From June to November 1943 HAZELWOOD's War Diary is in a very detailed format; however, starting in December, 1943 it becomes streamlined, and remains in this form for the remainder the war. Also included here are several Action Reports, which elaborate on specific engagements with the enemy.
