Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tonda: A Story of the Sioux While the author wishes to have Tonda classed as fiction, many of the incidents related actually occurred. Generally, the customs are true to life, although some ethnological liberties have been taken. The Indian form of speech is frequently changed, yet many sentences are given as literal translations - from governmental and other reports, from the author's records made while at Pine Ridge reservation, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Capture and Escape: Or, Life Among the Sioux More than five years have elapsed since the great Indian War of the plains commenced, by the raid of a band of roving, hostile Indians upon a small company of emigrants that were en route to the gold regions of Idaho. The attack was at Little Box-Elder Creek, in Idaho Territory. I was of that unfortunate company; and, after this interval, which has brought desolation and death among the frontier people, I have endeavored to narrate briefly my experience with the Indians, and to record some observations of Indian life and character. Book The Taming of the Sioux Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Taming of the Sioux No historian of prominence should presume to ask the public to take his work as the last word on the subject which it treats. There is bound to be some one who will find inaccuracies and deficiencies, and the whole work may be condemned on account of them. There never was a history written that is absolutely correct, so I suppose mine must be a little off on a few trivial matters. A deep student of the ethnology, phonology, psychology and anthropology of the Sioux may (I say may advisedly) find these defects. To him I offer no apologies, he has enough ologies now, and I don't wish to burden him with more of them. History is essentially didactical, indeed it is, and we soon tire of its prosiness, its unpicturesque display of data and long-winded statistics. However, there are some individuals who are ultra-pedantic, and to whom nothing appeals but what is strictly utilitarian. To such persons I commend certain parts of this work, while to the others - the great majority - the balance of it may prove entertaining. The absence of humor I greatly deplore, for it just seems that I cannot think up anythin' funny. But the reader may find a great deal to laugh about after all, if he is inclined to be critical. The old timers, God bless 'em, always take an important part in an historical work. But they seldom agree with each other. There is a psychological reason for this, as there is for most anything we do not clearly understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of My Captivity Among the Sioux Indians The summer of 1864 marked a period of unusual peril to the daring pioneers seeking homes in the far West. Following upon the horrible massacres in Minnesota in 1862, and the subsequent chastisements inflicted by the expeditions under Generals Sully and Sibley in 1863, whereby the Indians were driven from the then western borders of civilization, in Iowa, Minnesota, and the white settlements of Dakota, in the Missouri Valley, the great emigrant trails to Idaho and Montana became the scene of fresh outrages; and, from the wild, almost inaccessible nature of the country, pursuit and punishment were impossible. Book excerpt: Warren King Moorehead was known in his time as the 'Dean of American archaeology' born in Siena, Italy to missionary parents on March 10, 1866, he died on January 5, 1939.A contract to write for a national magazine about the "Ghost Dance" phenomenon on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation put Moorehead on the scene for the critical weeks leading up to what is now known as the Wounded Knee Massacre of Dec. 29, 1890. Moorehead was not present, though his camera was apparently used by journalists who were still on the scene to record the horrific aftermath; Gen. John Rutter Brooke ordered Moorehead off the reservation under armed military escort on Dec. 28, according to Moorehead's journal because he was the only reporter present who spoke some of the language and was permitted to stay overnight with the Sioux in their encampments."Wanneta, the Sioux" of the Sioux Indians of the 1800s, based largely on fact. "Wanneta, the Sioux" is similar to another popular best-seller of that time period, "Ramona" by Helen Hunt Jackson, most known for her historical work "A Century of Dishonor about mistreatment of Native American people across the continent".The success of Moorehead's "Wanneta" led to a lecture tour across the east coast in the fall of 1890.Table of ContentsI. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dahcotah: Or Life and Legends of the Sioux Around Fort Snelling My only title to the office of editor in the present case is some practice is such matters, with a very warm interest in all, whether relating to past or present, that concerns our western country. Mrs. Eastman, wife of Captain Eastman, - and daughter of Dr. Henderson, both of the U. S. army, - is thoroughly acquainted with the customs, superstitions, and leading ideas of the Dahcotahs, whose vicinity to Fort Snelling, and frequent intercourse with its inmates, have brought them much under the notice of the officers and ladies of the garrison. She has no occasion to present the Indian in a theatrical garb - a mere thing of paint and feathers, less like the original than his own rude delineation on birch-bark or deer-skin. The reader will find in the following pages living men and women, whose feelings are in many respects like his own, and whose motives of action are very similar to those of the rest of the world, though far less artfully covered up and disguised under pleasant names. Envy, hatred and malice, and all uncharitableness," stand out, unblushing, in Indian life. The first is not called emulation, nor the second just indignation or merited contempt, nor the third zeal for truth, nor the fourth keen discernment of character. Anger and revenge are carried out honestly to their natural fruit injury to others. Among the Indians this takes the form of murder, while with us it is obliged to content itself with slander, or cunning depreciation. Book Narratives of the Sioux War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Narratives of the Sioux War Classic Reprint written by Marion P. Satterlee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narratives of the Sioux War Lest this appear pessimistic, it is well to explain that it was hard to deal reasonably with these strange people who claimed the land. As said by Rev. Samuel W. Pond, They were not models for imitation, neither were they properly objects of con tempt. Those who care to investigate will find many reasons for the outbreak of 1862, but the essential facts are, that the Indians were obnoxious to and in the way of the whites, were preyed upon by conscienceless traders and boot-legging liquor sellers, and were neglected by the government and its agents, till at last long smothered anger and acute hunger produced a storm that broke in fury, the opening event of which was the murders at Acton on Sunday, the 17th day of August, 1862. In Acton township, Meeker county, on section 21, lived Rob inson Jones, postmaster, Indian trader, and farmer. He was married to Mrs. Ann Baker the previous year, on January 14; but through some error her name appears as Ann Baker on the monument erected over the remains of the victims at Ness Cemetery. Living with them was Jones' niece, Clara D. Wil son, aged fifteen years, and her half brother, eight months old. The house was a two-story log building overlooking a marshy lake on the south, and was surrounded by heavy timber known as the Acton Woods, a part of the once famous Big Woods. The pembina-henderson trail passed at the back of the house and along the west side. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Four Weeks Among Some of the Sioux Tribes of Dakota and Nebraska written by Herbert Welsh and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Weeks Among Some of the Sioux Tribes of Dakota and Nebraska: Together With a Brief Consideration of the Indian Problem We found ourselves about midday, June 17th, at the little town of Chamberlain, Dakota, a place of some three hundred inhabitants, lying upon the east bank of the Missouri river. To this distant point we had come by the request of Bishop Hare, in order to gain some knowledge of the schools and missions established, under his direction, by the Episcopal Church, among the Sioux Indians. As we left the train, our eyes sought eagerly for the Rev. Luke Walker, a full-blooded Sioux and a presbyter of the Church, who was to have met us at the station and thence to have conducted us to his mission among the Lower Brules, four miles distant, and within the limits of the reservation upon the other side of the Missouri. Our search was in vain, and not until late in the day, after we had made two ineffectual attempts to cross the river, did we find our friend, who, in company with Rev. Mr. Burt, had been detained later than was his expectation, at a distant point. Mr. Burt is one of those who came to this country ten years ago, from Berkeley Divinity School, after hearing William Welsh plead the Indian cause. He.has ever since labored among the people as a faithful missionary and has acquired not only a knowledge of their character and customs, but also great proficiency in the Dakota tongue. We crossed the Missouri as the sun sank behind the reservation hills, with the blue sky above us from which the storms that had risen suddenly during the afternoon, and threatened an hour before, had now dropped to the horizon. Beneath us rolled a fierce muddy stream in whose waters, swollen by spring rains, our oars labored slowly.
