Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in Patagonia: Or Life Among the Ostrich-Hunters In the month of August, 1877, 1 found myself on board ship, bound from Buenos Ayres for the coast of Patagonia, in company with a party of engineers, who were going to survey that portion of the country which lies between Port Desire and Santa Cruz. After leaving the River Plate we encountered adverse winds and heavy weather, which kept us tossing about for three weeks, without making any material progress on our course. At last we got a fair wind, however, which soon brought us close to our destination, the port of St. Julian lat. 49 20' S.); and one morning, together with my five o'clock coffee, the cabin-boy brought me the welcome news that land was in sight. I jumped out of bed and ran on deck, careless of the hail and rain which were falling in blinding showers, and of the wind which blew off the land, far colder and sharper than we had hitherto experienced. Book Wanderings in Patagonia Or Life Among the Ostrich Hunters Illustrated Edition

This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julius Beerbohm (1854-1906) was a Victorian travel writer, engineer, and explorer whose family members included the renowned actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree and the caricaturist and parodist Max Beerbohm. He spent much time travelling around Europe losing money at casinos and then thinking up grandiose schemes to recoup his losses, such as dredging the Nile to uncover the lost jewels of the Pharaohs. Despite being constantly on the verge of financial ruin, he maintained a high standard of living, even indulging his dandyism by sending his linen from London to Paris to be washed. In his role as engineer, in 1877 he travelled to Patagonia as part of a group sent to survey the land between Port Desire and Santa Cruz and Wanderings in Patagonia (1881) gives an account of his time there, offering vivid descriptions of the natural history and geography of the country. He travelled across deserts and through jungles with the native Indians, encountering snowstorms and ostrich hunters, and among his most memorable adventures include a dangerous crossing during a severe flood, and the episode when the group finally arrive in Sandy Point only to witness the local prison and its military guard mutinying, getting drunk, taking over the town and killing many of the citizens. Includes 7 black and white illustrations, including a diagram of the rock formation.

Book The Right Sort of Woman

Download or read book The Right Sort of Woman written by Precious McKenzie Stearns and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rhetoric surrounding Empire, freedom, and adventure are nowhere more striking than in nineteenth-century British women’s travel writing. The Right Sort of Woman charts the progression of British feminism in relationship to exploration of the Empire. Precious McKenzie introduces us to the lesser known writings of Florence Douglas Dixie, Mrs. Aubrey Le Blond, and Isabel Savory, and also revisits the more widely read travel texts of Isabella Bird Bishop and Mary Kingsley. Their travel writings explore the hotly debated Victorian ideologies of femininity, equality, and fitness. McKenzie contends that British women travel writers found opportunities for freedom when traveling abroad. Women travelers could participate in what were traditionally men’s sports – hunting, riding, canoeing, shooting, mountaineering – when far away from strict Victorian social codes of behavior. Because of their athletic pursuits while abroad, British women travelers found their health improved as did their self-reliance and self-confidence. McKenzie considers how sports shaped the British feminist movement and then became integral to the revolutionary image of the New Woman at the fin de siècle.

Book Information and Its Role in Hunter Gatherer Bands

Download or read book Information and Its Role in Hunter Gatherer Bands written by Robert K. Hitchcock and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information and its Role in Hunter-Gatherer Bands explores the question of how information, broadly conceived, is acquired, stored, circulated, and utilized in small-scale hunter-gatherer societies, or bands. Given the nature of this question, the volume brings together a group of scholars from multiple disciplines, including archaeology, ethnography, linguistics, and evolutionary ecology. Each of these specialties deals with the question of information in different ways and with different sets of data given different primacy. The fundamental goal of the volume is to bridge disciplines and subdisciplines, open discussion, and see if some common ground-either theoretical perspectives, general principles, or methodologies-can be developed upon which to build future research on the role of information in hunter-gatherer bands.
