Book Rhetorics of Fantasy

Download or read book Rhetorics of Fantasy written by Farah Mendlesohn and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sweeping study of fantasy literature offers “new and often surprising readings of works both familiar and obscure. A fine critical work” (Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts). Transcending arguments over the definition of fantasy literature, Rhetorics of Fantasy introduces a provocative new system of classification for the genre. Drawing on nearly two hundred examples of modern fantasy, author Farah Mendlesohn identifies four categories—portal-quest, immersive, intrusion, and liminal—that arise out of the relationship of the protagonist to the fantasy world. Using these sets, Mendlesohn argues that the author's stylistic decisions are then shaped by the inescapably political demands of the category in which they choose to write. Each chapter covers at least twenty books in detail, ranging from nineteenth-century fantasy and horror to some of the best works in the contemporary field. Mendlesohn discusses works by more than one hundred authors, including Lloyd Alexander, Peter Beagle, Marion Zimmer Bradley, John Crowley, Stephen R. Donaldson, Stephen King, C. S. Lewis, Gregory Maguire, Robin McKinley, China Miéville, Suniti Namjoshi, Philip Pullman, J. K. Rowling, Sheri S. Tepper, J. R. R. Tolkien, Tad Williams, and many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Original Six NHL member, the Broadway Blueshirts boast one of the most renowned histories in the last hundred years of North American professional hockey. With the New York Rangers returning to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in twenty years in the 2013-2014 season, their presence is more prominent than ever. In this newly updated edition of New York Rangers: Greatest Moments and Players, first published in 2007, hockey’s premier historian recounts all of the Rangers’ luminaries such as Andy Bathgate, Brian Leetch, and current goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, as well as their most telling moments on the ice. Throughout the years, Stan Fischler, a Manhattanite of almost half a century, has covered both the Blueshirts’ highs and lows. Regarded as the dean of American hockey journalists, he has been covering the sport for sixty years, and has been following the Rangers even longer. With over ninety books on hockey published to date, there is nobody better to narrate the history of one of hockey’s most celebrated clubs, the New York Rangers, than Stan Fischler. Book Victorian Sustainability in Literature and Culture

Download or read book Victorian Sustainability in Literature and Culture written by Wendy Parkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a growing awareness of the depletion of energy resources and the perils of environmental degradation to the founding of self-sufficient communities and the establishment of the National Trust, the concept of sustainability began to take on a new importance in the Victorian period. An emerging sense of the fragility and instability of human and natural resources, and the deeply complex interweaving of the two, led many Victorians to consider how to preserve or protect what they valued, and how individuals, communities (or even nations) could survive and flourish in a world of finite resources. This collection explores not only nascent understandings of sustainability in ecological or environmental contexts but also encompasses consideration of the problem of psychological sustainability and emotional wellbeing in response to the upheavals of modernity. With chapters by scholars working in literary studies, history, cultural studies, and sustainability studies, the volume encompasses a wide diversity of topics, objects, and authors ranging from the 1850s to the early twentieth century. Victorian Sustainability offers new perspectives on debates about sustainability in the present by showing how our current concerns derive from an earlier historical context.
