Book Comparative Vertebrate Cognition

Download or read book Comparative Vertebrate Cognition written by Lesley J. Rogers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores afresh the long-standing interest, and emphasis on, the `special' capacities of primates. Some of the recent discoveries of the higher cognitive abilities of other mammals and also birds challenge the concept that primates are special and even the view that the cognitive ability of apes is more advanced than that of nonprimate mammals and birds. It is therefore timely to ask whether primates are, in fact, special and to do so from a broad range of perspectives. Divided into five sections this book deals with topics about higher cognition and how it is manifested in different species, and also considers aspects of brain structure that might be associated with complex behavior.

  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book The Human Use of Animals written by Tom L. Beauchamp and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of The Human Use of Animals offered the first set of case studies on animal use through sixteen original, previously unpublished essays. Whereas the first edition strongly emphasized research issues, the second edition now adds material on conversation concerns and the use of animals in entertainment, specifically cases on endangered species, zoos, circuses, and 'sport' fighting. As with the first edition, the cases are presented in an objective and balanced way that will spark reasoned debate about moral issues. Extensively revised and updated, the second edition maintains a commitment to a discussion of ethical reflection and analysis concerning human interactions with animals.

Book Personhood Ethics and Animal Cognition

Download or read book Personhood Ethics and Animal Cognition written by Gary E. Varner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-11 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R.M. Hare was one of the most important ethical theorists of the 20th century, and one of his graduate students, Peter Singer, became famous for his writings on animals and personhood. Singer now says that he endorses Hare's "two-level utilitarianism," and he has invoked the theory's distinction between "critical thinking" and thinking in terms of "intuitive level rules" in response to certain objections to his conclusions on several issues. Hare, however, never published a systematic treatment of how his theory applies to issues in animal ethics, and he avoided the concept of "personhood." Gary Varner here fills this gap by defending the moral legitimacy of distinguishing among "persons," "near-persons," and "the merely sentient" within Harean two-level utilitarianism. He explores the implications of this distinction by applying the resulting ethical system to our treatment of animals, and shows how the results contrast with the more abolitionist conclusions reached by Singer on the same issues. In the process, he presents a new philosophical defense of two-level utilitarianism and its metaethical foundation (universal prescriptivism), and he significantly expands Hare's account of how "intuitive level rules" function in moral thinking, based on recent empirical research. The book also draws heavily on empirical research on consciousness and cognition in non-human animals as a way of approaching the question of which animals, if any, are "persons," or at least "near-persons." Philosophers, including those interested in utilitarianism in general or Hare in particular, as well as others interested in animal ethics or the debate over personhood, will find Varner's argument of great interest. "Professor Varner's earlier work, In Nature's Interests, is a very fine book. It has achieved a high level of respect from those working in the field, and is often seen as having set a new standard of debate in environmental ethics. That means that a new book by Professor Varner will be received with considerable interest. Varner draws on extensive recent empirical research regarding the degree to which animals are self-conscious and uses this information as the basis for the most serious discussion I have yet seen of whether any nonhuman animals can be considered 'persons'. There is, to my knowledge, no other book that goes into these issues anywhere near as deeply, in the context of assessing their significance for the normative issues of the wrongness of taking life, or other issues relating to ethical decision-making regarding our treatment of animals and some humans. I have no doubt that this book will, like In Nature's Interests, be seen as making an important contribution to the topics it covers." - Peter Singer, University Center for Human Values, Princeton University

Occupied by visions of trick horses, parades and high-wire acts, Clown Baby relates the fantastic to the common reality where he finds himself. Similarly, in the Figures, LaFemina, with his profound gift for image, captures the wonder of the big top, as imagined and recreated in children's play. Gerry LaFemina's poetry collection THE PARAKEETS OF BROOKLYN received the 2003 Bordighera Prize in Poetry and was published in a bi-lingual edition of English and Italian. Among his honors are prizes from the Academy of American Poets and fellowships from the Irving Gilmore Emerging Artist Foundation and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. The former editor of the literary journal Controlled Burn, LaFemina now co-edits with poet Dennis Hinrichsen Review Revue, a journal of reviews, interviews and prosody essays. Currently he directs the Frostburg Center for Creative Writing at Frostburg State University where he is an Assistant Professor of English.

Book excerpt: Stories describe Michigan's first governor, Lewis Cass, signing a treaty with the Chippewa in 1819 and resting nearby with companions under a swamp oak a few miles north of Detroit. Cass told the story of Prince Charles II, who took refuge in 1651 under a mighty oak tree after the Battle of Worcester and lived to be crowned king. Cass later designated the locality, including the southernmost townships in Oakland County, as Royal Oak. This sector became a village in 1891 and a city in 1921. Strong roots have helped the "City of Trees" maintain its viability through the years. Home to William Beaumont Hospital, assorted high-tech graphic and sound studios, and a world-class zoo, today Royal Oak draws people into its pedestrian-friendly downtown for an eclectic mix of bars, sidewalk cafés, boutiques, theaters, and upscale lofts.

Book Wild Animals in Captivity

Download or read book Wild Animals in Captivity written by Rob Laidlaw and published by Fitzhenry & Whiteside. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A caged lion pacing back and forth on a worn path and dolphins swimming in unending circles are captive animals exhibiting 'stereotypies, ' or repetitive abnormal behaviors. These disturbing behaviors are a common sight in many zoos. Laidlaw effectively captures the plight faced by captive wild animals, even in major, apparently high-quality zoos. In four riveting chapters he explores first the general issues of life in captivity, then addresses specific, often severe, problems faced by polar bears, elephants, dolphins and Great Apes. He goes on to discuss types of zoos and their particular flaws, then concludes with advice for readers on objective evaluation of the zoos they visit and offers a list of ten ways to help animals in captivity. This eye-opening look at zoo issues will strike a chord with readers and would be a useful addition to most collections." -- Kirkus Reviews on the hardcover edition "The issues raised in this important and powerful book will resonate with young and old." -- School Library Journal A large family of elephants ambles all day along a well-remembered route across the hot African savanna. Halfway around the world in a zoo in Alaska, a single female elephant paces back and forth in her cramped, concrete pen. During the sub-arctic winter, she lives alone in a dark barn. When you visit a zoo do you ever wonder what it must be like for the animals who live day by day in the same enclosures? Author Rob Laidlaw asks the tough questions that zoos often avoid: should these animals be in there at all? This is an eye-opening look at the lives of captive wild animals -- at bad zoos, good zoos, and the best wild animal sanctuaries.
