Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walter De Wenlok: Abbot of Westminster In the Flores Historiarum there stand side by side two records which may serve as a fitting introduction to our story, the more so as they refer to the year in which it opens. The first relates how on St. George's Day, in the year 1283, there passed away one John de Bradfield, Bishop of Rochester, to be succeeded by Thomas de Ynglestop or Inglethorpe, Dean of St. Paul's: and it proceeds to explain what an uncomfortable state of things then prevailed at Rochester between the Bishop and the monks. The Bishop appointed monks as officials in his household and conferred sergeancies to the disadvantage of the church; he also asserted his right to receive the dole or gift of St. Andrew.* This was resented by the Prior on behalf of the monks and was resisted to the extent of an appeal to the Archbishop of Canterbury, John Peckham, nothing l0th, as a Franciscan, to find himself called upon for a ruling in this squabble of regulars. His Grace's reply was immediate and ominous. "Descendam et videbo," so he told the Prior, not at all unmindful that this was the phrase in which the Vulgate represents the Almighty's announcement to Abraham of an intention to examine the sinfulness of Sodom and Gomorrah. Book The Obedientiaries of Westminster Abbey and Their Financial Records C 1275 1540

Download or read book The Obedientiaries of Westminster Abbey and Their Financial Records C 1275 1540 written by Westminster Abbey and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the normal practice in Benedictine monasteries, the obedientiaries of Westminster Abbey kept two quite different kinds of record, and for distinct purposes. Their charters, together with the cartularies and registers where these documents were so often copied, made it possible for them to defend the Abbey's properties and privileges when these were challenged by lay or ecclesiastical opponents. Their financial records - the subject-matter of this book - assisted good housekeeping within their several departments and enabled them to survive the audit which each faced once a year at the hands of fellow-monks; only the abbot and prior were tacitly exempted from this testing experience. The core of the collection of financial records consists of the so-called final accounts prepared each year by obedientiaries, other than the abbot and prior, for scrutiny at the audit. Nearly 2,000 of these survive, not counting second copies. In the course of the year, however, obedientiaries made use of many other forms of financial record. Without these subsidiary records, it would have been difficult or impossible to compile the final accounts, and we can be confident that many were on the table at the audit and owe their survival to this circumstance.

Book The Abbots and Priors of Late Medieval and Reformation England

Download or read book The Abbots and Priors of Late Medieval and Reformation England written by Martin Heale and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the medieval abbot needs no particular emphasis. The monastic superiors of late medieval England ruled over thousands of monks and canons, who swore to them vows of obedience; they were prominent figures in royal and church government; and collectively they controlled properties worth around double the Crown's annual ordinary income. Moreover, as guardians of regular observance and the primary interface between their monastery and the wider world, abbots and priors were pivotal to the effective functioning and well-being of the monastic order. The Abbots and Priors of Late Medieval and Reformation England provides the first detailed study of English male monastic superiors, exploring their evolving role and reputation between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. Individual chapters examine the election and selection of late medieval monastic heads; the internal functions of the superior as the father of the community; the head of house as administrator; abbatial living standards and modes of display; monastic superiors' public role in service of the Church and Crown; their external relations and reputation; the interaction between monastic heads and the government in Henry VIII's England; the Dissolution of the monasteries; and the afterlives of abbots and priors following the suppression of their houses. This study of monastic leadership sheds much valuable light on the religious houses of late medieval and early Tudor England, including their spiritual life, administration, spending priorities, and their multi-faceted relations with the outside world. The Abbots and Priors of Late Medieval and Reformation England also elucidates the crucial part played by monastic superiors in the dramatic events of the 1530s, when many heads surrendered their monasteries into the hands of Henry VIII.
