Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sadakichi Hartmann was born on the artificial island of Dejima, Nagasaki, to a Japanese mother, who died soon after childbirth, and a German father. He was raised in Germany and came to Philadelphia in 1882. Two years after arriving, at the age of seventeen, he paid his first visit to Walt Whitman, now sixty-five years old, who was living modestly just across the Delaware River, in Camden. Fascinated by the poet’s life and work, Sadakichi would visit Whitman several times over the course of six years, to talk about literature and to question the poet about contemporary authors and books. Sadakichi went on to publish Whitman’s opinions first in the New York Herald, in 1880, arousing the indignation of many and making him unpopular with the admirers of the poet, and later, in 1885, in Conversations with Walt Whitman.

Book Intimate With Walt

Download or read book Intimate With Walt written by Horace Traubel and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2001-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1888 Horace Traubel, Whitman's loyal and hardworking assistant, began to record his almost daily conversations with the most famous resident of Camden. The result: more than 1,900,000 words that were eventually published between 1906 and 1996 in nine volumes. Titled With Walt Whitman in Camden, these volumes contain much that is mundane and repetitive, but they also include many passages crucial for a full and humane understanding of America's first great national poet. In Intimate with Walt Gary Schmidgall has condensed Traubel's nearly 5,000 pages into one manageable volume featuring the many self-revealing, humorous, nostalgic, and often curmudgeonly words of the Good Gray Poet. The book is divided into five sections, each consisting of several chapters: the first, presenting Walt on himself, his family, and his daily life and visitors at the only home he ever owned; the second, on his artistic credos, the literary life, and a large array of comments on the writing, publication of, and critical reaction to Leaves of Grass; the third, focusing on his friends, admirers, idols, and lovers; the fourth and longest, presenting his no-holds-barred views on a variety of topics, including the American scene, race, religion, music, and even alcohol; and finally, a gathering of passages revealing Whitman's struggles with his infirmities, his poignant final days, and Traubel's observations on Whitman's deathbed scene and burial rites. Whitman was the great poet of autobiography, and with this volume we gain entry into a most remarkable life in his own words. Whimsical and highly entertaining, poignant and moving, illuminating and candid, Intimate with Walt makes accessible the most amazing oral history project in all of American letters.

Book excerpt: Absorbing as biography, invaluable as reference, this latest volume in the distinguished series that began publication in 1906continues Traubel's minute, detailed, day-by-day account of America's greatest poet. William White, editor of the Walt Whitman Review and coeditor of The Collected Writings of Walt Whitman, assumed the editorial chores when Gertrude Traubel was unable to continue the project. Traubel wrote of the work that had absorbed so much of her life: "Vitality, contemporaneity--these Whitman characteristics--bring him to you not just an old man reliving a memorable career, but--like most seers--looking at events before him with flashes of prophetic insight." Volume 6presents the period from September 15, 1889, to July 6, 1890, with virtual transcripts of the conversations of Whitman with Traubel. Whitman's thoughts and opinions, reminiscences, his goings and comings, letters he received and wrote, and hundreds of other matters as well as important details of his life in his home on Mickle Street in Camden. This series is indispensable for an understanding of and insight into the life and opinions of Walt Whitman. Horace Traubel fulfilled Whitman's charge "to speak for me when I am dead," in a manner without precedent.

Book Walt Whitman Speaks His Final Thoughts on Life Writing Spirituality and the Promise of America

Download or read book Walt Whitman Speaks His Final Thoughts on Life Writing Spirituality and the Promise of America written by Walt Whitman and published by Library of America. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Whitman bicentennial, a delightful keepsake edition of the incomparable wisdom of America's greatest poet, distilled from his fascinating late-in-life conversations with Horace Traubel. Toward the end of his life, Walt Whitman was visited almost daily at his home in Camden, New Jersey, by the young poet and social reformer Horace Traubel. After each visit, Traubel meticulously recorded their conversation, transcribing with such sensitivity that Whitman’s friend John Burroughs remarked that he felt he could almost hear the poet breathing. In Walt Whitman Speaks, acclaimed author Brenda Wineapple draws from Traubel’s extensive interviews an extraordinary gathering of Whitman’s observations that conveys the core of his ethos and vision. Here is Whitman the sage, champion of expansiveness and human freedom. Here, too, is the poet’s more personal side—his vivid memories of Thoreau, Emerson, and Lincoln, his literary judgments on writers such as Shakespeare, Goethe, and Tolstoy, and his expressions of hope in the democratic promise of the nation he loved. The result is a keepsake edition to touch the soul, capturing the distilled wisdom of America’s greatest poet.

Book Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts

Download or read book Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts written by Walt Whitman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Series Editors: Gay Wilson Allen and Sculley Bradley Originally published between 1961 and 1984, and now available in paperback for the first time, the critically acclaimed Collected Writings of Walt Whitman captures every facet of one of America’s most important poets. Notebooks and Unpublished Prose Manuscripts gathers Whitman’s autobiographical notes, his views on contemporary politics, and the writings he made as he educated himself in ancient history, religion and mythology, health (including phrenology), and word-study. Included is material on his Civil War experiences, his love of Abraham Lincoln, his descriptions of various trips to the West and South and of the cities in which he resided, his generally pessimistic view of America’s prospects in the Reconstruction and the Gilded Age, and his reminiscences during his final years and his preoccupation with the increasing ailments that came with old age. Many of these notes served as sources for his poetry—first drafts of some of the poems are included as they appear in the notes—and as the basis for his lectures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camden's Compliment to Walt Whitman, May 31, 1889: Notes, Addresses, Letters, Telegrams Whitman himself was not to come to Share the feast. He needed to husband his strength. He was more necessary to the success of the after-addresses. Following the Chat of the groups in the reception rooms, there resulted, upon a Whispered hint which quickly circulated, a quiet flow of people to the hall be low. Three tables had there been spread, two almost/ the full length Of the floor, and one crossing them at the head, set apart for those who were to speak, and so arranged that any speaker could at once face the Whole line of the guests. The music on the platform, the banners on the walls, the flowers on the table - a bouquet at each plate, and Clusters here and there - united to enrich the impression of the hour. Yet nothingwas elaborate, and there was no ostentation'. On the menu card a phototype portrait of Whitman stood felicitously alone, without name or word to any effect and within, opposing (or uniting) influences, foodstuffs ranged as The Feast of Reason, and matters of speech as The Flow of Soul. The afternoon was warm. The wax tapers gleamed with persistent uncertainty. The Winds out of doors kept up a rather ominous melody. Everybody had it in mind that, after all, this was z'nlerz'm, that the real message bearer was yet to come, fand that, in our dining, we were merely halting on a journey. With this consciousness everywhere pre vailing, an hour passed. Good humor was plenty, and talk was free. Was Walt Whitman sure to come? Penetrating all else.
