Book excerpt: "A Passion for Steam" describes how small scale, live-steam locomotives work in clear, understandable language. All systems are covered, including boilers, boiler fittings, burners, different fuels, valve gears, different cylinder types, and sundry variations. The second half of the book is a fascinating survey of nearly 100 miniature locomotives, scratchbuilt and commercial, that discusses what makes each one different from its fellows. The book is fully illustrated with hundreds of high-quality drawings and beautiful photographs.

Book excerpt: The geared locomotive is important in the history of logging. It mechanized the transport of logs from forest to mill. The Willamette is but a footnote with only 33 ever built. Its impact belies the small number; it brought innovations later copied by the big players: Shay and Heisler. A useful and worthy contribution to the history of rail and logging. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first thought, when contemplating a new study of the Great Western Railway locomotive fleet, must surely be to ask what can there be left to say? But there is no single source which gives a general introduction to the Great Western locomotive fleet. There are monographs on individual classes, an excellent multi-volume detail study from the RCTS, and superb collections of photographs, but nothing that brings it all together. This work is intended to provide that general introduction. The volume begins with a series of short essays covering general trends in design development, whilst the main body of the volume covers individual classes. For each class there is a small table containing some principal dimensions and paragraphs of text, covering an introduction, renumbering, key changes in the development of the class and information on withdrawal. The volume concludes with appendices covering the development and types of standard boilers, the various numbering schemes used by the GWR, the arcane subject of locomotive diagrams and lot numbers, and a short reference on the many lines the GWR engulfed. The majority of illustrations are new profile drawings to a consistent format. Described as sketches, they are drawn to a consistent scale, but do not claim to be scale drawings. Much minor equipment has been omitted and the author has certainly not dared to include rivets! Although most are based around GWR weight diagrams, they are not simple traces of the original drawings. Detail has been added from other sources, components copied from different drawings and details have been checked against historical and modern photographs. One must also bear in mind that steam locomotives were not mass produced. Minor fittings frequently varied in position and changes were made over the locomotives' lifetimes. Nevertheless, this collection of drawings provides a uniquely consistent view of the GWR locomotive fleet.

Download or read book La Locomotive Vapeur written by André Chapelon and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by the great French engineer André Chapelon, the man responsible for what were the world's most efficient and, on a pound for pound basis, most powerful steam locomotives ever built. Published in 1952, in this book Chapelon reviews in detail developments in the design and construction of all the steam locomotive's major parts, and compares the merits of simple and compound expansion. He then looks, again in detail, at the major standard gauge locomotive designs worldwide of the 20th Century, including his own. Translated from the French by George Carpenter, this edition includes various addenda updating Chapelon's work to the end of commercial steam, looks at Chapelon's unbuilt designs, and reviews the work of those who have continued to develop advanced steam locomotives. A book nobody interested in the history of the steam locomotive in the 20th century should be without. 659 A4 format pages, over 450 B & W photos, drawings, diagrams and charts, plus 41 colour illustrations.
