When Martin and his AllDog, Chip, go back to his old suburbs to check up on Mom, they get a lot more than they bargained for when they end up escaping with both parents. But the biggest surprise is yet to come—the heart of the government’s central power is closer to Martin than he ever suspected.

Book The Walls Have Eyes

Download or read book The Walls Have Eyes written by Petra Molnar and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a foreword by E. Tendayi Achiume A chilling exposé of the inhumane and lucrative sharpening of borders around the globe through experimental surveillance technology In 2022, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced it was training “robot dogs” to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border against migrants. Four-legged machines equipped with cameras and sensors would join a network of drones and automated surveillance towers—nicknamed the “smart wall.” This is part of a worldwide trend: as more people are displaced by war, economic instability, and a warming planet, more countries are turning to AI-driven technology to “manage” the influx. Based on years of researching borderlands across the world, lawyer and anthropologist Petra Molnar’s The Walls Have Eyes is a truly global story—a dystopian vision turned reality, where your body is your passport and matters of life and death are determined by algorithm. Examining how technology is being deployed by governments on the world’s most vulnerable with little regulation, Molnar also shows us how borders are now big business, with defense contractors and tech start-ups alike scrambling to capture this highly profitable market. With a foreword by former UN Special Rapporteur E. Tendayi Achiume, The Walls Have Eyes reveals the profound human stakes of the sharpening of borders around the globe, foregrounding the stories of people on the move and the daring forms of resistance that have emerged against the hubris and cruelty of those seeking to use technology to turn human beings into problems to be solved.

Book The Walls Have the Floor

Download or read book The Walls Have the Floor written by Julien Besancon and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The graffiti of the French student and worker uprising of May 1968, capturing participatory politics in action. Graffiti itself became a form of freedom. —Julien Besançon, The Walls Have the Floor Fifty years ago, in 1968, barricades were erected in the streets of Paris for the first time since the Paris Commune of nearly one hundred years before. The events of May 1968 began with student protests against the Vietnam War and American imperialism, expanded to rebellion over student living conditions and resistance to capitalist consumerism. An uprising at the Sorbonne was followed by wildcat strikes across France, uniting students and workers and bringing the country's economy to a halt. There have been many accounts of these events. This book tells the story in a different way, through the graffiti inscribed by protestors as they protested. The graffiti collected here is by turns poetic, punning, hopeful, sarcastic, and crude. It quotes poets as often as it does political thinkers. Many wrote “I have nothing to write,” signaling not their naiveté but their desire to participate. Other anonymous declarations included “Prohibiting prohibited”; “The dream is reality”; “The walls have ears. Your ears have walls”; “Exaggeration is the beginning of invention”; “Comrades, you're nitpicking”; “You don't beg for the right to live, you take it”; and “I came/I saw/I believed.” A meeting is called at the Grand Amphitheater of the Sorbonne: “Agenda: the worldwide revolution.” This was interactive, participatory politics before Twitter and Facebook. Although the revolution of May 1968 didn't topple the government (Charles de Gaulle fled the country, only to return; in June, his party won a resounding electoral mandate), it made history. In The Walls Have the Floor, Julien Besançon collected traces of this history before the walls were painted over, and published this collection in July 1968 even as the paint was drying. Read today, the graffiti of 1968 captures, in a way no conventional history can, the defining spontaneity of the events.

Book The Sky Inside

Download or read book The Sky Inside written by Clare B. Dunkle and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-12-21 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin lives in a perfect world. Every year a new generation of genetically-engineered children is shipped out to meet their parents. Every spring the residents of his town take down the snow they've stuck to their windows and put up flowers. Every morning his family gathers around their television and votes, like everyone else, for whatever matter of national importance the president has on the table. Today, it is the color of his drapes. It's business as usual under the protective dome of suburb HM1. And it's all about to come crashing down. Because a stranger has come to take away all the little children, including Martin's sister, Cassie, and no one wants to talk about where she has gone. The way Martin sees it, he has a choice. He can remain in the dubious safety of HM1, with danger that no one wants to talk about lurking just beneath the surface, or he can actually break out of the suburb, into the mysterious land outside, rumored to be nothing but blowing sand for miles upon miles. Acclaimed author Clare B. Dunkle has crafted a fresh and fast-paced science-fiction thriller, one that challenges her characters—and her readers—to look closer at the world they take for granted.

Book If the Walls Could Talk

Download or read book If the Walls Could Talk written by Jane O'Connor and published by Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In case you've ever wondered, the walls at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue have eyes and ears -- and, what's more, they don't miss a thing. Now, listen up because the walls have a thing or two to tell you! During President John Tyler's presidency, the White House was such a mess that it was called the "Public Shabby House." President William Howard Taft was so large that he had to have a jumbo-size bathtub installed -- one big enough for four people. President Andrew Jackson's "open door" policy at the White House resulted in 20,000 people showing up for his inauguration party. (The new president escaped to the quiet of a nearby hotel!) President Abraham Lincoln didn't mind at all that his younger sons, Tad and Willie, kept pet goats in their White House bedrooms. Children all across the country sent in their own money to build an indoor swimming pool for wheelchair-bound President Franklin D. Roosevelt so that he could exercise. President Harry S. Truman knew it was time to renovate the White House after a leg on his daughter's piano broke right through the floor. Hear these funny, surprising stories and more about the most famous home in America and the extraordinary families who have lived in it.

Book Thoughts of Life

Download or read book Thoughts of Life written by L. Ghost and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-12-14 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book cause I like helping other just by talking with them not to them. This book is mainly my thought's about life in general, from talking with people about their problems in hopes that they have a better understanding as to life as I see it. and from movies I've seen over the years that something that was said in the movie or what certain things people say that sticks in my mind till I sit and write something down in regards to the statement that was said. Most of the things I wrote about basically stem from my life's experiences, some of the things in the book may hit close to home as to say. Other words you may feel that I wrote about you. It's just something to think about. i live in Knoxville ,TN. at this time but I have live in a lot of cities and states mainly within partly some of the 48 states of the USA, never had the chance to leave this country. And I basically lived off and on either on the streets or alone since I was 16 yrs old. So one could say I've been there done that. And it has taken me years to write this book.

Book The House with Sixteen Handmade Doors A Tale of Architectural Choice and Craftsmanship

This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An architectural whodunit that unlocks the secrets of a hand-built home. When Henry Petroski and his wife Catherine bought a charming but modest six-decades-old island retreat in coastal Maine, Petroski couldn’t help but admire its unusual construction. An eminent expert on engineering, history, and design, he began wondering about the place’s origins and evolution: Who built it, and how? What needs, materials, technologies, historical developments, and laws shaped it? How had it fared through the years with its various inhabitants? Sleuthing around dimly lit closets, knotty-pine wall panels, and even a secret passage—but never removing so much as a nail—Petroski zooms in on the details but also steps back to examine the structure in the context of its time and place. Catherine Petroski’s beautiful photographs capture the clues and the atmosphere. A vibrant cast of neighbors and past residents—most notably the house’s masterful creator, an engineer-turned-“folk architect”—become key characters in the story. As the mystery unfolds, revealing an extraordinary house and its environs, this ode to loving design will leave readers enchanted and inspired.

Book If Walls Could Talk

Download or read book If Walls Could Talk written by Bernard Mavritte and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Walls Could Talk: Some Need To Be Silenced But Some Speak Out Loud By: Bernard Mavritte Ever since human beings have known how to build structures with walls, a ceiling and some kind of roof, the walls within those structures have witnessed so much. If they were animate objects, with eyes, a mouth and ears, they could say so much that could not be constrained within all the books upon the earth. Those walls have witnessed the good, the bad, the joys, and the sorrows. They have seen things that those who live within the parameter of the walls would love to share with others, and yet many occurrences that should never be revealed, the deep secrets of our lives we are ashamed to reveal to others. From our entrance on this earth, until we depart, the walls have seen it all. In this autobiography memoir, Bernard Mavritte reveals the good and the bad, the joys and the sorrows in his own life, a story that is full of life itself. He shares how God has opened so many doors for him, bringing him through his many trials. If the walls in his life could talk, some of them would need to be silenced, but some would need to speak loudly.
