Book excerpt: A Businessweek Bestseller "You fail to read F.I.A.S.C.O. at your peril." —Los Angeles Times F.I.A.S.C.O. is the best-selling account of Frank Partnoy's education in the jungle of high finance from 1993 to 1995. Book excerpt: As the new century dawned, Wall Street was a game and the stock market was fixed. Ordinary investors were fleeced by big institutions that manipulated the markets to their own advantage and they had no comeback. The Game in Wall Street shows the ways that the titans of rampant capitalism operated to make money from any source they could control. Their accumulated funds gave the titans enormous power over the market, and allowed them to ensure they won the game. Traders joining the game without knowing the rules are on a road to ruin. It's like gambling without knowing the rules, and with no idea of the odds. The Game in Wall Street sets out in detail exactly how this market manipulation works and shows how to ride the price movements and make a profit. And guess what? The rules of the game haven't changed since the book was first published in 1898. You can apply the same strategies in your own investing and avoid losing your shirt by gambling against the professionals. Illustrated with the very first stock charts ever published, the book contains a new preface and a conclusion by stock market guru Clem Chambers which put the text in the context of how Wall Street operates today.

Book Crapshoot Investing

Download or read book Crapshoot Investing written by Jim McTague and published by Pearson Education. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just the past few years, the equity markets have been transformed into a high-speed casino that’s a pure crapshoot: a white-knuckle rollercoaster ride that has left individual investors legitimately terrified of equities. The Flash Crash of May 6, 2010–when the DJIA plummeted 734 points in 17 minutes, and dozens of top companies traded as low as zero–was just a harbinger of disasters to come. In Crap Shoot Investing, Barron’s Washington Editor Jim McTague reveals the twin causes of this massive transformation: high-frequency traders using mathematical hocus pocus, and blundering regulators whose attempts to promote long-term investment have massively backfired. McTague takes you through the Flash Crash moment by moment, revealing what happened and how it happened. Next, he burrows “under the volcano” to uncover the titanic, uncontrolled forces now at work in equity markets, showing investors exactly what they’re jumping into when they buy and sell stock today. You’ll learn how new exchanges, desperate for cash, are attracting high-frequency traders at everyone else’s expense... how “dark pools” of hidden trades are tilting the playing field...how even small investors are promoting dangerous volatility. McTague explains why regulators continue to ignore the big picture as the markets accelerate towards chaos. Last but not least, he presents a rational strategy for investors who need to get ahead in markets that have become riskier than most casinos. "A valuable read for anyone considering investing in equity markets." Reprinted with permission from CHOICE http://www.cro2.org, copyright by the American Library Association.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... PART II. One of the first things to notice is that only SEVEN OR EIGHT TRUMP CARDS are used for the most part in playing this game. Seven or eight stocks out of more than a hundred and thirty on the board contribute three-fourths of the transactions on the exchanges. You had better confine your attention to these and hold only these cards in your hand. These are the stocks that are manipulated by the big pools. If you will run your eye down the column of "numbers of shares sold" in the daily report, you will at once pick out the stocks that are handled by these pools. For the last five years Sugar has been the leading card on the board. Tobacco at times comes next, and St. Paul is a good third; Burlington and Rock Island come next. Manhattan, Chicago or Peoples' Gas and Union Pacific preferred. All of these constitute the principal pool cards to-day. Time was when Atchison and Reading and Lackawanna and Missouri Pacific and other favorites were used; but these have been discarded for the most part, and the list given above are the ones to-day. New cards may be taken up from time to time and old ones thrown aside, but take the year through only seven or eight cards are used as trumps, and ninetenths of the transactions will be in these particular stocks. Toward the end of the campaign, either on the bull or bear side, the outside stocks will be made use of more prominently. To succeed you must study the manipulation of the pool cards. Confine your transactions to these. POOL STOCKS AND SPECIALTIES. As we have said there are six or eight stocks handled by the big pools; the rest of the stocks may be called "specialties." Should one deal in the pool stocks or the "specialties?" At the beginning and during the first half of both the bull and...

Book The Seven Sins of Wall Street

Download or read book The Seven Sins of Wall Street written by Bob Ivry and published by Public Affairs. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all know that the financial crisis of 2008 came dangerously close to pushing the United States and the world into a depression rivaling that of the 1930s. But what is astonishing—and should make us not just afraid but very afraid—are the shenanigans of the biggest banks since the crisis. Bob Ivry passionately, eloquently, and convincingly details the operatic ineptitude of America's best-compensated executives and the ways the government kowtows to what it mistakenly imagines is their competence and success. Ivry shows that the only thing that has changed since the meltdown is how too-big-to-fail banks and their fellow travelers in Washington have nudged us ever closer to an even bigger economic calamity. Informed by deep reporting from New York, Washington, and the heartland, The Seven Sins of Wall Street, like no other book, shows how we’re all affected by the financial industry’s inhumanity. The transgressions of “Wall Street titans” and “masters of the universe” are paid for by real people. In fierce, plain English, Ivry indicts a financial industry that continues to work for the few at the expense of the rest of us. Problems that financiers deemed too complicated to be understood by ordinary folks are shown by Ivry to be financial legerdemain—a smokescreen of complexity and jargon that hide the bankers’ nefarious activities. The Seven Sins of Wall Street is irreverent and timely, an infuriating black comedy. The Great Depression of the 1930s moved the American political system to real reform that kept the finance industry in check. With millions so deeply affected since the crisis of 2008, you’ll finish this book asking yourself how it is that so many of the nation’s leading financial institutions remain such exasperating problem children.
