Book excerpt: The wall effects in cavity flows past an arbitrary two-dimensional body is investigated for both pure-drag and lifting cases based on an inviscid nonlinear flow theory. The over-all features of various theoretical flow models for inviscid cavity flows under the wall effects are discussed from the general momentum consideration in comparison with typical viscous, incompressible wake flows in a channel. In the case of pure drag cavity flows, three theoretical models in common use, namely, the open-wake, Riabouchinsky and re-entrant jet models, are applied to evaluate the solution. Methods of numerical computation are discussed for bodies of arbitrary shape, and are carried out in detail for wedges of all angles. The final numerical results are compared between the different flow models, and the differences pointed out. Further analysis of the results has led to development of several useful formulas for correcting the wall effect. In the lifting flow case, the wall effect on the pressure and hydrodynamic forces acting on arbitrary body is formulated for the choked cavity flow in a closed water tunnel of arbitrary shape and computed for the flat plate with a finite cavity in a straight tunnel. Book excerpt: The research presented in this dissertation focuses on understanding and passively controlling the unsteadiness of the flow that occurs in cavity flows. Flow passing over a cavity generates turbulent structures that result in pressure fluctuations in the cavity that exhibits itself as noise at selected tonal frequencies. The unsteadiness and the presence of the turbulent structures can be strong enough to damage the equipment that is stored in these cavities. Understanding the flow unsteadiness and determining the means to control it is an important research area that has been undertaken over the past several decades. High speed cavity flow presents several problems when used in practical applications. At lower speeds, vibrations can be controlled with ramps and/or flaps; however, there is a current need to provide a better understanding of supersonic flow around a cavity to allow future aircraft to release payload at high speed. Most of the previous research on cavity flows has been done on rectangular cavities and has provided guidelines for determining dominant frequencies and other flow properties over a cavity. This project focuses on understanding the flow unsteadiness in more of a basic configuration, namely over an axisymmetric cavity, to eliminate the effects of the side walls on the flow development. Such research is scarce in the literature, although it is a building block in understanding the nature of the cavity flows. The results of the current research agree well with the previous research conducted on rectangular cavities. The measured tonal frequencies match the predicted Rossiter modes that are well defined for rectangular cavities. The pressure data obtained at the cavity walls has shown a decrease in sound pressure levels at the various tonal frequencies when the cavity is lengthened. It is also shown that replacing the back wall of the cavity with a half-height wall results in both positive and negative effects to the tonal frequencies. At the front wall pressure fluctuations are reduced at all cavity lengths; however, the rear wall shows significant increase in pressure fluctuations for the medium and large cavity lengths.

Book excerpt: This study is motivated by three-dimensional flows about protrusions and cavities with an arbitrary angle between the external flow and rigid elements. The novel type of a "building block" cavity flow is proposed where the cavity lid moves along its diagonal (Case A). The proposed case is taken as a typical representative of essentially three-dimensional highly separated vortical flows having simple single-block rectangular geometry of computational domain. Computational results are compared to the previous studies where the lid moves parallel to the cavity side walls (Case B). These 3-D lid-driven cavity flows are studied by numerical modeling using second-order upwind schemes for convective terms. The volume and plane integrals of primary and transversal momentum are introduced to compare cases in a quantitative way. For the laminar flow in the cubic cavity, the integral momentum of the secondary flow (which is perpendicular to the lid direction) is about an order of magnitude larger than that in Case B. In Case A, the number of secondary vortices substantially depends on the Re number. The secondary vortices in the central part of the cavity in Case A distinguishes it from Case B, where only corner secondary vortices appear. For a rectangular 3-D 3: 1 : 1 cavity the integral momentum of the secondary flow in Case A is an order of magnitude larger than that in the benchmark cases. The flow field in Case A includes a curvilinear separation line and non-symmetrical vortices which are discussed in the paper. The estimated Goertler number is approximately 4.5 times larger in Case A than that in Case B for the same Re number. This indicates that in Case A the flow becomes unsteady for smaller Re numbers than in Case B. For developed turbulent flow in the cubic cavity, the yaw effect on amplifcation of secondary flow is as strong as that for the laminar flow despite the more complex vortical flow pattern in benchmark case B.
