Book Walks in London Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Walks in London Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Augustus J. C. Hare and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks in London, Vol. 2 of 2 Let us find ourselves again at Charing Cross, which forms the south-eastern angle of Trafalgar Square, a dreary expanse of granite with two granite fountains, intended to commemorate the last victory of Nelson. Its northern side is occupied by the miserable buildings of the National Gallery; its eastern and western sides by a hideous hotel and a frightful club. Where the noble Jacobian screen of Northumberland House (which was so admirably adapted for a National Portrait Gallery) once drew the eye away from these abominations by its dignity and beauty, a view of the funnel-roof of Charing Cross railway Station forms a poor substitute for the time-honoured palace of the Percy's! In the centre of the square is a Corinthian pillar of Devonshire granite, 145 feet height, by IV. Railton, erected in 1843. It supports a statue of Nelson by E. H. Baily, R. A., a very poor work, which, however, does not much signify, as it can only be properly seen from the top of the Duke of York's column, which no one ascends. The pedestal of the column is decorated by reliefs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Walks and Talks About London Classic Reprint

Download or read book Walks and Talks About London Classic Reprint written by John Timbs and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks and Talks About London London has so many aspects, that it has been well described as a subject always new. That hearty lover of our metropolis, Dr. Johnson, sitting in Bolt-court, said: "the happiness of London is not to be conceived but by those who have been in it. I will venture to say, there is more learning and science within the circumference of ten miles from where we now sit, than in all the rest of the kingdom." Again, Johnson says: "how different a place London is to different people," each person viewing it through the medium of one particular pursuit: "but the intellectual man is struck with it as comprehending the whole of human life in all its variety, the contemplation of which is inexhaustible." The isolation of London is well conveyed in Horace Walpole's experience, that there is no being alone but in a metropolis; and it is said - the old Dramatist's truism - that "the next-door neighbours don't know each other." The immensity of London has led to its being termed a province covered with houses: or, as Burke phrased it, "an endless addition of littleness to littleness, extending itself over a great tract of land." Johnson's definition is still more to the point: "if you wish to have a just notion of the magnitude of this city, you must not be satisfied with seeing its great streets and squares, but must survey the innumerable little lanes and courts. It is not in the showy evolutions of buildings, but in the multiplicity of human habitations whi6h are crowded together, that the wonderful immensity of London consists." And many years ago, when Southey began to study the Map of London, he was dismayed at the sight of its prodigious extent. To the man of a reflective turn of mind - to see the stir of the great Babel, And not feel the crowd, is endlessly suggestive. Book A Walk From London to Land s End and Back

Download or read book A Walk From London to Land s End and Back written by Elihu Burritt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Walk From London to Land's End and Back: With Notes by the Way The volume herewith presented to the reader is the sequel or companion to the one published last year under the title of "A Walk from London to John O'Groat's." It was the author's original intention to make the journey on foot from one end of Great Britain to the other in one season, and to make but one volume of his notes by the way. But, being obliged to postpone the commencement of the tour until midsummer, 1863, he was able to accomplish only the northern half of it during that year. This, however, furnished incident and observation enough to fill a pretty large book. The next spring, therefore, he set out on the other half of the journey, or "From London to Land's End and Back," a distance about equal to the tour of the preceding year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walk From London to John O'groats: With Notes by the Way In presenting this volume to the public, I feel that a few words of explanation are due to the readers that it may obtain, in addition to those offered to them in the first chapter. When I first visited England, in 1846, it was my intention to make a pedestrian tour from one end of the island to the other, in order to become more thoroughly acquainted with the country and people than I could by any other mode of travelling. A few weeks after my arrival, I set out on such a walk, and had made about one hundred miles on foot, when I was constrained to suspend the tour, in order to take part in movements which soon absorbed all my time and strength. Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
