Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Vol. 171: January-June, 1902 I always provided myself with lots of extras, and did myself very comfortably in every way. Only the first week, before I had got accustomed to it and settled down, was I not so satisfied. I had a very good servant, which is half the battle, and then I had always access to the medical comforts. My day (later on, at least, when I had settled down) was somewhat as follows: 8 e.m., get up out of my bed in the waggon, wash and dress in the tent, breakfast at about 9. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Vol. 61: January June, 1847 Nor are there many cities, however boastful of their antiquities, which present more picturesque views than meet the eye as, leaving the garden of the Tuileries, you proceed up the river; and the round towers, with their conical roofs, of the Palm's de Justice, rise on the opposite banks, and you catch glimpses of Notre Dame. In London, the houses have crowded down to the edge of the water, and are standing up to their ankles in it, so that the inhabitants may walk about its streets all their lives, and never know that a river is flowing through their city. From the centre of one of its bridges they may indeed assure themselves of the fact, and confirm, by their own observations, what they had learned in the geo graphical studies of their youth, the. London is built on the river Thames but, even from this position, it is more wood than water they will see. The shipping, and the boats of all kinds, blot out the river, and so crush and overcharge it that it is matter of wonder how it continues to exist and move under such a burden. It is otherwise in Paris. There one walks along the quay, and sees the river flown through the city. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Edinburgh The Making of a Capital City

Download or read book Edinburgh The Making of a Capital City written by Edwards Brian Edwards and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unique and comprehensive review of the making and re-making of Edinburgh over most of the last millennium. A series of themes of wide relevance are explored and discussed in the context of their impact upon the form of the city and its success as a capital. These include:*The European influence on urban and architectural form.*The synthesis of architecture, landscape and topography.*The dialogue between conservation and innovation.*The search for social, economic and cultural sustainability.*The role of governance and public action in urban ecology.A special feature of the book is the way the Old and New Towns are discussed as a connected problem of image and politics, rather than two isolated events in the history of the city. Likewise, the relations between the city centre, the suburban edge and beyond throughout the 20th century are examined holistically, allowing the reader to gain a broader perspective both of the city of today and of the future. What emerges is a city unique - at least in the UK - in terms of the care taken over its image and sense of identity, and the political and institutional investment made in preserving this.Key Features:*Deals with the development of the city in a holistic manner.*Relates the physical evolution of the city to wide social, cultural, economic and political movements in the UK and Europe.*Uses design, conservation, sustainability and governance as major structuring themes.*Presents fresh perspectives on the making and re-making of Edinburgh over a period of nearly 1,000 years.
