Download or read book Merton s Palace of Nowhere written by James Finley and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For forty years, James Finley’s Merton's Palace of Nowhere has been the standard text for exploring, reflecting on, and understanding the rich vein of Thomas Merton's thought. Spiritual identity is the quest to know who we are, to find meaning, to overcome that sense of “Is this all there is?” Merton’s message cuts to the heart of this universal quest, and Finley illuminates that message as no one else can. As a young man of eighteen, Finley left home for an unlikely destination: the Abbey of Gethsemani, where Thomas Merton lived as a contemplative. Finley stayed at the monastery for six maturing years and later wrote this Merton’s Palace of Nowhere in order to share a taste of what he had learned on his spiritual journey under the guidance of one of the great religious figures of our time. At the heart of the quest for spiritual identity are Merton's illuminating insights—leading from an awareness of the false and illusory self to a realization of the true self. Dog-eared, tattered, underlined copies of this book are found on the bookshelves of retreat centers, parish libraries, and the homes of spiritual seekers everywhere. This anniversary edition brings a classic to a new generation and includes a new preface by Finley.

Download or read book Follow Me written by Daniel Thomas and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-10-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow Me is a unique contribution of Mr. Daniel Thomas to the devotional literary world and history of the Mar Thoma Church in North America. His ardent efforts are appreciated since he brought together the thoughts of great literary geniuses, the contributions of great church leaders, and the legacies of great missionary warriors from different epochs of history. It was an ambitious task, it was a good discipline, and has turned out as a great contribution. He has done everything possible to point to the great Master or Rabbi of human civilization, Jesus Christ. Jesus called his disciples, saying, "Follow me." This call resonates through the biblical world of God's call of the Patriarch Abraham, the call of Moses to liberate the People of God from slavery from Egypt. God's call continues through prophets, priests, judges, and kings. Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Mar Paulos Diocesan Bishop

Download or read book Suffering Is Optional written by Gail Brenner and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you struggle with self‐defeating thoughts and feelings of inadequacy, you are not alone. We’ve all felt inadequate, believing that we’re broken or otherwise unworthy. But this doesn’t have to be a life sentence. Presenting four guiding principles and five core practices based in deep spiritual wisdom, Suffering Is Optional reveals how to liberate yourself from the prison of false self‐beliefs holding you back. Millions of people feel that they are not good enough. They may struggle every day, seeing themselves as deficient, pathetic, or damaged, and destined to fail. They convince themselves they aren’t worthy of love or respect, and view themselves with self-hatred. When you believe and cling to painful, self-defeating thoughts like “I can’t do it,” “It won’t work,” or “I’m a loser,” they become your personal reality—and the more you repeat them, the more you believe them, until they come to define you. Sadly, these limiting self-definitions lead to even more pain and suffering: hidden shame, problems in relationships, opportunities lost, and a life not fully lived. In Suffering Is Optional, clinical psychologist Gail Brenner offers practical ways to discover that you are not what your thoughts tell you you are. Rather than showing you how to become a better version of yourself, this book goes straight to the heart of the problem—that you’ve mistakenly identified yourself as broken and undeserving—to guide you out of these limiting thoughts and into an investigation of the nature of reality that ultimately liberates you from your suffering. With these exercises, experiments, reflections, practices, and inspiring stories, you’ll have a spiritual solution to your personal problem of limitation and self-sabotage. Using the four guiding principles and five core practices presented in this book—including turning toward direct experience, grounding in aware presence, losing interest in thoughts, welcoming feelings, and the sacred return to presence—you’ll be able to shed your false identity and wake up to the inherent peace and happiness that is available to you in any given moment.
Download or read book Roll Over Tchaikovsky written by Stephen Amico and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centered on the musical experiences of homosexual men in St. Petersburg and Moscow, this ground-breaking study examines how post-Soviet popular music both informs and plays off of a corporeal understanding of Russian male homosexuality. Drawing upon ethnography, musical analysis, and phenomenological theory, Stephen Amico offers an expert technical analysis of Russian rock, pop, and estrada music, dovetailing into an illuminating discussion of homosexual men's physical and bodily perceptions of music. He also outlines how popular music performers use song lyrics, drag, physical movements, images of women, sexualized male bodies, and other tools and tropes to implicitly or explicitly express sexual orientation through performance. Finally, Amico uncovers how such performances help homosexual Russian men to create their own social spaces and selves, in meaningful relation to others with whom they share a "nontraditional orientation."
Download or read book Never Stop Learning written by Fred Stephenson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2024-03-14 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success, happiness, love, appreciation, and respect. During the course of my 80-year life, I cannot remember meeting anyone who didn’t want to obtain each of these goals, collectively a fulfillment of their lives, an affirmation that their lives really made a difference and meant something, and that their efforts were worthwhile. At the same time I know too many people who feel just the opposite, that they, compared to others, have been unsuccessful. And they are not as happy as they hoped to be. My purpose in writing this book is to uplift and help them. Never Stop Learning is a collection of 21 stories that I originally wrote for my 10 grandchildren, as helpful guidance to assist them in navigating life more easily and successfully. Subsequently, I became convinced that if my stories could help my family, then they could help many other people. This book is the result. Each story’s purpose is to teach lessons defining the keys to unlocking success, happiness, love, appreciation and respect. Who should read this book? Truthfully, the ones who could get the most benefit are 16-35-year-olds because they have the most time left, maybe the greatest need, plus they are going through the years where they are making many key decisions in rapid order about education, careers, jobs, and perhaps marriage and children. But I truly believe anyone from 8 to 100 would learn from the book’s lessons. I state this because some of my reviewers in their 80’s told me so. This I know. None of us will ever know everything about most anything. We still have plenty to learn. Personally, I am never going to stop trying to learn. Like me, others still have that hunger for knowledge and understanding. I hope more will join us in that pursuit. Never stop learning. You won’t regret it.
