Jesus had His unique purpose in this world as do we, and so just like Him we need to remain in the Father. His life was a living sacrifice, and it is our spiritual act of worship to live like Him. As we step into God's light, it will shine truth on our lives-truth that is sometimes hard to recognize, hard to acknowledge, and hard to live out. But as we learn to live in His light, He gives us clarity, understanding and transforms us from the inside out. We learn to walk in His light shining it wherever we go. Why? God loves the whole world, and He loves you. Everything He calls us to do according to His purpose is to show His love to the world and bring glory to Himself. As you work through the disciplines of fellowship, obedience, humility, meditation, prayer, and worship, you will learn how to draw close to the Father, follow the example of Jesus, and shine His light bright for all to see.

But why did I choose to write this book? I would like to share 3 of those reasons with you.The first reason pertains to the nature of this book: it is an exposition of 1 John. Do not let the word "exposition" scare you; it simply means to expose. I want to expose the meaning of God's Word. That is what all good Bible teachers seek to do, after all. I could have written a topical book, and topical studies can be helpful. But my conviction is that going through a book of the Bible one word at a time, one phrase at a time, one verse at a time, leaving no stone unturned, is the most effective way to study and teach God's Word. It seems to me that only the seasoned theologians with a firm grasp on the entire Bible can write a topical book without taking verses out of context and covering everything that needs to be taught. Further, the best topical helps are often the product of many hours spent doing proper exposition and exegesis (a fancy word us snobs like to use for Bible study).My second reason pertains to conviction. All of God's Word is inspired. The Bible does not simply contain the words of God, it is the Word of God. But it seems to me that even the best expositional preachers emphasize certain doctrines throughout their ministry. It is their heartbeat. It is what drives them. While they are faithful to the full counsel of God, certain convictions shine through. Oftentimes, these emphases come about because of false teachings that godly men have identified and seek to expose. Martin Luther greatly emphasized justification by faith because of the works-based salvation that was so prevalent in his day. Dr. John MacArthur has taught extensively on lordship salvation - the belief that you cannot know Christ as Savior without also knowing Him as Lord. Jesus is both Savior and Lord, and to have one without the other is to have a false Jesus. When MacArthur wrote The Gospel According to Jesus years ago, he wrote on that very subject because many professing Christians believed that they were saved, but they were not living for Jesus. He argued that when a person truly gets saved, then they will submit to Jesus. Several years and many books later, he continues to return to this theme, and the church should thank God for his work in this particular realm of theology. For me, I continue to return to 1 John time and time again because it speaks to the greatest problem I see in America today. No, it does not talk about the economy or politics. America's greatest problem is false conversions. Our country is populated by people who think that because they prayed a prayer and asked Jesus into their heart, they are definitely going to heaven. That is the greatest lie that Satan is feeding us, and we gulp it down without even chewing. Not once in Scripture are we told to ask Jesus into our hearts. If you are basing your salvation on a past event and you are not walking with Christ, then you probably did not get saved to begin with. When you become a Christian, evidence of your conversion must follow. John tells us what that evidence is in this epistle. I have a burden for those who are practicing a "Fire Insurance Christianity." I want to cut through this false belief with the sword that John fashioned in this epistle.My third reason pertains to legacy. There are two dear people God has given me to lead and serve. While just about everyone I know calls me Jonathan, these two people call me Daddy. This book is for them. I want to leave behind a book for them that explains the Christian life in clear terms. I want to go before them and light the way with biblical truth so that they may know Jesus more deeply than I ever did, as well as worship Him with more zeal than I ever could.

This relationship was made possible by an increased emphasis on reading God's Word, by attending Bible studies, by faithful church attendance, and by spending more time in prayer. I also realized that God had given me the ability to write poetry and short stories as a therapeutic gift. This outlet of creativity became my "voice" because I had a speech impediment and was emotionally paralyzed with fear at the thought of public speaking. Along with the love, prayers, and concern of Christian friends and a minister, God healed me of this fear and speech impediment. For fifty years, I endured a lot of humiliation and embarrassing moments with this problem, and I would get very depressed at times dealing with this. I was only eight years old when I asked my first prayer request to God asking Him to remove this problem. Even as a young girl, I felt that God was the only hope I had. I kept praying, and God kept sending people into my life to help me. I started attending a Bible study led by Nancy Andrews, and my faith started growing, and I started learning the truth of how God sees things and how much He loves us by sending His Son, Jesus, into this hurting world to help all of us. It wasn't until years later that I decided to dig deep into the Word of God, the Bible, daily and believe what the power of God can do. I had to renew my mind and put my trust in the Lord, Jesus Christ, for the victory of healing to take place. He is the great light, the truth, who is God Himself. I would have never made it without Him! I am so thankful that I am able to share my life story and my journey of faith with you.
