Book Seoul s Historic Walks in Sketches

Download or read book Seoul s Historic Walks in Sketches written by Janghee Lee and published by Seoul Selection . This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seoul is a rapidly changing city, the epitome of the latest trends and technology. But looking closely in between the skyscrapers, there lie hints that reveal an alternate story, a story of a 600-year-old capital city. Seoul’s Historic Walks in Sketches discovers and brings to life these stories. From the Joseon era’s palaces and fortresses to modern skyscrapers of glass and steel built on historic sites, the author’s pencil sketches bring forth a new dimension of Seoul. Accompanying the illustrations are his insightful, witty commentaries on local history that go a long way in presenting readers with a captivating view of the unknown city, a city almost exotic in its mystery. A city, its architecture and its history: 15 must-see attractions in old town Seoul Through the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), Japanese colonial rule, the Korean War, industrialization, and democratization movements, countless stories of the changing times have been engraved in the nooks and crannies of Seoul. This book is a retrospect of the forgotten city of Hanyang (old Seoul), reviving the history once lived within the four ancient great gates. Many of the places covered in this book are among Seoul’s most famous landmarks and popular tourist attractions, yet the sagas unraveled at each destination impart an unconventional perspective. The author’s remarkably discerning eye notices and depicts the minute details most would miss around the city. For those unmoved by the textbook photographs and dry histories of existing guides to Seoul, this book’s intimate charm is sure to please. The ever-changing city of Seoul: Sites and stories unfamiliar even to locals It would be an understatement to say that this book is only dedicated to tracking down the historical traces of Seoul. As the author says, “Seoul isn’t an antique—it’s an ever-changing organism.” He discusses the recent changes that have proven significant to the city and introduces hidden attractions around the city, from an ecological park on a skyscraper rooftop to evidence of historical figures cleverly hidden in amongst the buildings. Seoul Historic Walks in Sketches contains extraordinary and unmatched insight into the city.

  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Seoul written by Rafael Luna and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on understanding how a megacity like Seoul can be read as a formal architectural composition and not an endless urban sprawl. In a broader sense, the book discusses the dichotomy between city and urbanization: “city” being an architectural problem of bounded forms, while “urbanism” is an infrastructural project of expansion. It is an uncontested reality that urbanization is a continuous global process that has produced nebulous conurbations labeled as megacities. These expand beyond the virtual administrative boundary of any said “city,” producing a discrepancy between an area of administrative control and the real physical condition of human settlement. If there were a better formal understanding of megacities through their typological architectural conditions, then there could be a better assessment of the qualitative state of urbanization. Avant-garde groups from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s such as Team X, the Situationist, the Structuralist, and the Metabolist worked with ideas of megaforms and megastructures to address this issue. Although most of these proposals remained as paper architecture, this book reevaluates some of these ideas for the 21st-century megacity, using Seoul as a case study due to its clear typological formations produced over its diff erent periods of governance. The aim is to present the concept for an infra-architectural hybrid model of typological islands and subterranean megastructure that organizes Seoul as a fl exible multi-linear city. This book will be of interest to academics and students of architecture, urban geography, and Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real Places. Real Life. Real Seoul. A Local Guide to the Hottest City in Asia What’s the best way to tour around a foreign city? Unless you want to pilgrim through the obvious landmarks and take typical vacation shots at tourist restaurants, the best and the safest way would be to get help from a reliable local friend, especially if you plan to explore a newly emerging city in constant change like Seoul. But what if you don’t have a reliable friend in Seoul? A Curated Guide: SEOUL, put together by a local editor and expat authors, will gladly be your friend. There’s more to Seoul than palaces, bibimbap, K-pop, and soju Authors Robert Koehler, former editor-in-chief of SEOUL magazine, and Hahna Yoon, former editor of Time Out Seoul, have long been introducing Seoul’s kaleidoscopic aspects to readers around the globe. Their insights in identifying the hidden gems of the city as well as their social, cultural, historical, and artistic knowledge have already been verified by the readers of their magazines, and Robert Koehler’s last book, Seoul Selection Guides: SEOUL, even topped Amazon’s Seoul tour guides category. Through this book, the two authors sought to present a selective curation distinguished from the humdrum travel information galore on and offline. Deviating from the beaten paths suggested by every previous Seoul guidebook, they curate lesser known enchantments: time-forsaken back alleys and exclusive local shops. While they don’t avoid famous sites altogether, they recommend spots according to their personal experiences rather than popularity, catering to various tastes. From elegantly aged hanok to the hippest clubs in town, the book covers a wide spectrum of interests and preferences. Locals share the very best Asia’s hottest metropolis has to offer A Curated Guide: SEOUL is comprised of 10 sections: Neighborhoods, Historic Architecture, Arts & Culture, Dining, Cafés & Teashops, Nightlife, Nature, Shopping, Experiences, and Accommodations. Want to get a rough idea of the huge metropolis and its layout? Warm up with the “Neighborhoods” section exploring the nine trendiest neighborhoods of Seoul. The authors’ favorites are Euljiro, where the atmosphere shifts dramatically from day to night, and Seongsu-dong, known as the “Brooklyn of Seoul.” If you want more in-depth stories about life and culture in Seoul, check out the essays and interviews of a local architect, indie musician, chef, coffee expert, and DJ featured in the book. With more than 400 photos of vivid moments in the city, the guide offers a fresh perspective on Seoul for travelers, expatriates, or anyone who is simply curious about the city.
