It includes analysis of Melbourne household travel data captured through the Victorian Integrated Survey of Travel and Activity (VISTA). No publicly available, detailed analysis of this data set has previously been carried out to understand the role of walking in the transport system. Like all household travel surveys, VISTA underreports short trips including walking, but it is one of the best sources of data on walking currently available. In addition to a literature review of published reports, Victoria Walks also sourced a range of unpublished data to gain the strongest possible understanding of access to suburban shopping centres.

The Future of the Fringe first explores the history of peri-urban areas, international peri-urban policy and practice, and related concepts. It analyses internationally relevant issues such as green belts and urban growth boundaries, regional policy, land supply and price, and the concepts of liveability, attractiveness, well-being and rural amenity. Book excerpt: Change to Walking tested the effectiveness of specific 'nudges' to encourage walking for short trips to train stations and primary schools, over a six-week period between early May and late June 2018. The program was a pilot behaviour change initiative funded by VicHealth and delivered through Victoria Walks in five locations across Melbourne and regional Victoria.A 'nudge' is a small change that can be made in a setting that influences people's behaviour. It applies insights from behavioural psychology and behavioural economics to encourage voluntary changes in people's choices or actions.Change to Walking worked with Transport for Victoria, using a range of criteria, to select three metropolitan train stations for the program to target: Croydon, Mitcham and Ringwood, all in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. It partnered with two schools, each engaged through their local council: Epping Views Primary School, in Melbourne's northern growth area within the City of Whittlesea; and Bourchier Street Primary School, in the City of Greater Shepparton, a regional city in central Victoria.

What is the role of automobility, and auto-dependence, in differentiating groups, both within cities and rural areas, and among transnational migrants moving across international borders? These are just some of the questions this book addresses. This volume provides a holistic and reflexive account of the role played by automobility in producing, reproducing, and differentiating social, economic and political life in the contemporary city, as well as the role played by the city in producing and reproducing auto-mobile inequalities. The first section, titled Driving Vulnerability, deals with issues of global importance related to economic, social, financial, and environmental sustainability and resilience, and socialization. The second section, Driving Inequality, is concerned with understanding the role played by automobility in producing urban socio-spatial inequalities, including those rooted in accessibility to work, migration status and ethnic concentration, and new measures of mobility-based inequality derived from the concept of effective speed. The third section, titled, Driving Politics, explores the politics of mobility in particular places, with an eye to demonstrating both the relevance of the politics of mobility for influencing and reinforcing actually existing neoliberalisms, and the kinds of politics that might allow for reform or restructuring of the auto-mobile city into one that is more socially, politically and environmentally just. In the conclusion to the book Walks draws on the findings of the other chapters to comment on the relationship between automobility, neoliberalism and citizenship, and to lay out strategies for dealing with the urban car system.
