Book excerpt: A brilliant and surprising account of the coming of the American Civil War, showing the crucial role of slaves who escaped to Mexico. The Underground Railroad to the North promised salvation to many American slaves before the Civil War. But thousands of people in the south-central United States escaped slavery not by heading north but by crossing the southern border into Mexico, where slavery was abolished in 1837. In South to Freedom, historianAlice L. Baumgartner tells the story of why Mexico abolished slavery and how its increasingly radical antislavery policies fueled the sectional crisis in the United States. Southerners hoped that annexing Texas and invading Mexico in the 1840s would stop runaways and secure slavery's future. Instead, the seizure of Alta California and Nuevo México upset the delicate political balance between free and slave states. This is a revelatory and essential new perspective on antebellum America and the causes of the Civil War.

Book excerpt: Runaway Fever is a humorous tale of self-discovery from the eyes of a sixteen-year-old girl. Taking place in an English town, Sophie Kent lives an unhappy life with her alcoholic and abusive Aunt Louisa. Her only comfort is her stubborn and shaggy dog, Ralph, the only thing she will miss. The story begins when Sophie officially decides to leave her aunt on the last day of school before summer vacation. She wants to go somewhere else, finish her high school education, and find hope, something that she has never been acquainted with. Sophie remembers several moments from her past as she is attending the last day at Wellville High School, and leaves the popularity-based school for the "lonely road." The road is sort of a path to hope, though she is unprepared for what is ahead. She thinks of going to an orphanage, but then again, she admits it is not a permanent destination. The road leaves off too numerous places and people, each having a different influence upon Sophie. The only things she becomes hesitant about is staying in one place after she spent so many years stuck in a dreary lifestyle and accepting that happiness really exists.

Book Autumn Bird and the Runaway

Download or read book Autumn Bird and the Runaway written by Melanie Florence and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two kids from different worlds form an unexpected friendship. Cody’s home life is a messy, too-often terrifying story of neglect and abuse. Cody himself is a smart kid, a survivor with a wicked sense of humour that helps him see past his circumstances and begin to try to get himself out. Autumn is, quite literally, on the other side of the tracks from him. Her home life is loving and secure, and she is “in” with the popular girls at school, even if she has a secret life as a glasses-wearing, self-professed comic book nerd at home. And even if the pressure to fit in at school requires hours of time spent making herself look “perfect.” Returning home from a movie one evening, Autumn comes across Cody, face down in the laneway behind her house. All Cody knows is that he can’t take another beating from his father like the one he just narrowly escaped. He can’t go home, but he doesn’t have anywhere else to go either. Autumn won’t turn her back on him, even if they never really were friends at school. She agrees to let him hide out in her dad’s art studio at night. Over the next couple of days of Autumn sneaking Cody food and bandages, his story comes out. And so does hers. Told in alternating narratives, Autumn Bird and the Runaway is a breathtaking collaboration by two of Canada’s finest writers of books for young readers. Infused with themes of identity, belonging and compassion, it’s a story that reminds us that we are all more than our circumstances, and we are all more connected than we think

Book Space in Diachrony

Download or read book Space in Diachrony written by Silvia Luraghi and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space is a fundamental dimension of human life and is pervasive in human experience. Research on space has highlighted the possible asymmetrical nature of spatial relations. Differences in the encoding of goals and sources of motion are a case in point, and cross-linguistic coding tendencies show that path is less frequently flagged by a dedicated case than goal, source/origin, and (static) location (locative). Interestingly, such asymmetries may correlate with certain types of landmark, as in the case of toponyms or of animate entities. Even though these issues have been focused upon both in typological and psycholinguistic research, they remain largely open. The papers in this collection aim to show that a diachronic approach may shed light on the way in which asymmetries in the space domain come about over time, thus contributing to the clarification of synchronically puzzling facts.
