Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetry of Wales Editor of this little Collection ventures to think' it may in some measure supply a want which he. Has heard mentioned, not only in the Principality, but in England also. Some of the Editor' s English friends - themselves being eminent in literature - have said to him, Wechave often heard that there is much of value in your literature and of beauty in your poetry. Why does not some one of your literati translate them into English, and furnish us with the means of judging for ourselves? We possess translated specimens of the literature, and especially the poetry of almost every other nation and people, and should feel greater interest in reading those of the aborigines of this country, with whom we have so much in common. Book Welsh Poetry Old and New in English Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Welsh Poetry Old and New in English Verse Classic Reprint written by Alfred Perceval Graves and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welsh Poetry Old and New, in English Verse Mr. Graves's translations cannot fail to give pleasure to those to whom his originals are familiar, but should be welcomed no less by the larger body of readers to whom Welsh poetry is accessible only by the road of translation. Wales boasts of her early poets, and claims for her later singers a share of the divine fire and a considerable proficiency in literary workmanship. The translator's work would be justified if he merely helped his readers to a fair judgment as to how far these claims are justified. Whether Mr. Graves has not achieved more and produced work that deserves to take its place in the fine company of English lyrics, I leave it to more competent critics to say. He has for the most part stuck closely to his originals, but it is not difficult, I think, to trace the hand of the poet, in spite of the shackles of the translator. Download or read book Welsh Poets of To Day and Yesterday Classic Reprint written by Edmund O. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welsh Poets of to-Day and Yesterday In bringing out a second series of translations from the Welsh, I must very gratefully recognise the extremely kind reception accorded to my Welsh Lyrics of the XIXth Century, - a reception which encourages me to persevere in the plan I there outlined of publishing four or five small volumes, from which, eventually, I might compile a fairly adequate Anthology of our XIXth Century Poets, with biographical and critical notices. But to do this I require assistance, and I would ask such of my readers who are interested in the matter to write to me suggesting Poets and particular Poems which they think ought to be included. I am now preparing two new volumes for the press - one of translations from living Welsh poets - and I should be really grateful for any help of the kind I have just indicated. Book Welsh Poems and Ballads Classic Reprint

Download or read book Welsh Poems and Ballads Classic Reprint written by George Borrow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welsh Poems and Ballads In a collection of unedited odds and ends from Borrow's papers bearing upon Wales, and dating from various periods of his career, there is one insignificant-looking sheet on whose back some lines are pencilled, beginning "The mountain snow." They are reproduced in the text, but deserve notice here because of the evidence they bring of Borrow's long-continued Welsh obsession and his long practice as a Welsh translator. Apparently they date from the time when he was writing "Lavengro," since the other side of the leaf contains a draft in ink of the preface to that book. Other sheets of blue foolscap in the same bundle - folded small for the pocket - are devoted to unnumbered chapters of "Wild Wales." Yet another scrap, from a much earlier period, is so closely packed in a microscopic hand that it reminds one at a first glance of the painfully minute script of the Bronte sisters in their earliest attempts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At the Font of Eryri: A Book About Poetry in Wales The book is late because the printers were busy. It has no special purpose. There is a discussion here about modern poets in Wales. I do not say they are better or worse than the old poets. They have given me pleasure, and I speak of it. The title is my homage to the only region in the world that interests me. Wales has often been no larger than Eryri, and at the foot of it I am content to loiter and to learn. I thank the one or two friends who have helped me, and the Editor of the Brython for leave to print three essays.
