Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 4, 1906, on Cornell University's campus, seven black men founded one of the greatest and most enduring organizations in American history. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. has brought together and shaped such esteemed men as Martin Luther King Jr., Cornel West, Thurgood Marshall, Wes Moore, W. E. B. DuBois, Roland Martin, and Paul Robeson. "Born in the shadow of slavery and on the lap of disenfranchisement," Alpha Phi Alpha—like other black Greek-letter organizations—was founded to instill a spirit of high academic achievement and intellectualism, foster meaningful and lifelong ties, and racially uplift those brothers who would be initiated into its ranks. In Alpha Phi Alpha, Gregory S. Parks, Stefan M. Bradley, and other contributing authors analyze the fraternity and its members' fidelity to the founding precepts set forth in 1906. They discuss the identity established by the fraternity at its inception, the challenges of protecting the image and brand, and how the organization can identify and train future Alpha men to uphold the standards of an outstanding African American fraternity. Drawing on organizational identity theory and a diverse array of methodologies, the authors raise and answer questions that are relevant not only to Alpha Phi Alpha but to all black Greek-letter organizations.

Book A Parent Partner Status for American Family Law

Download or read book A Parent Partner Status for American Family Law written by Merle H. Weiner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that becoming a parent is a pivotal event, the birth or adoption of a child has little significance for parents' legal relationship to each other. Instead, the law relies upon marriage, domestic partnerships, and contracts to set the parameters of parents' legal relationship. With over forty percent of American children born to unwed mothers and consistently high rates of divorce, this book argues that the law's current approach to regulating parental relationships is outdated. A new legal and social structure is needed to guide parents so they act as supportive partners and to deter uncommitted couples from having children. This book is the first of its kind to propose a new 'parent-partner' status within family law. Included are a detailed discussion of the benefits of the status as well as specific recommendations for legal obligations.

Download or read book Alcohol written by Roman Espejo and published by Greenhaven Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2012-12-17 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether adults realize it or not, the world we portray shows children and teens that alcohol is an important part of enjoying life. It is only natural during the years a teen is exerting rights and seeking independence, that they'd want to try what we inundate them with in messaging as a good time. This fact of life is what leads us to the controversial, contentious, and never-ending debate on teen rights and alcohol. This collection of essays analyzes many issues related to alcohol, including the national minimum drinking age, the liability of adult hosts of social gatherings where minors are served alcohol, the prospect of a graduated alcohol licensing system that would loosen restrictions for people aged 18 to 20, and the growing trend of mandatory alcohol testing at high school dances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores tort law through the lens of psychological science. Drawing on a wealth of psychological research and their own experiences teaching and researching tort law, the authors examine the psychological assumptions that underlie doctrinal rules. They explore how tort law influences the behavior and decision making of potential plaintiffs and defendants, examining how doctors and patients, drivers, manufacturers and purchasers of products, property owners, and others make decisions against the backdrop of tort law. They show how the judges and jurors who decide tort claims are influenced by psychological phenomena in deciding cases. And they reveal how plaintiffs, defendants, and their attorneys resolve tort disputes in the shadow of tort law."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Torts

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aaron D. Twerski
  • Publisher : Aspen Publishing
  • Release : 2021-01-31
  • ISBN : 1543826296
  • Pages : 1307 pages

Download or read book Torts written by Aaron D. Twerski and published by Aspen Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 1307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written first and foremost as a teaching tool, Torts: Cases and Materials, is a casebook that engages students without avoiding the hard questions. Modeled on the venerable Prosser casebook, but intended to be modern, accessible, and yet sophisticated, this book consistently gets high marks from students for being clear, user-friendly, and not playing hide-the-ball like so many other casebooks. Challenging hypotheticals and authors’ dialogues engage students while allowing instructors to probe more deeply into ambiguous or developing areas of law. The book’s manageable length makes it ideal for a three- to four-hour introductory Torts course. New to the Fifth Edition: Cases that are judiciously edited, so as to let the judges’ voices be heard, along with the inclusion of dissenting opinions where important. Numerous recent cases have been added both in the notes and as principal cases, while old material has been pruned back to reduce unnecessary bulk. Continued integration of the Third Restatement throughout the book, including caselaw development following the new Restatement (particularly in the area of foreseeability, duty, and proximate cause). Professors and student will benefit from: Text designed to clarify the law, not further befuddle students. Explanations, note cases, and hypotheticals that are aimed at increasing understanding. Writing style written in a conversational manner to be plain-spoken and transparent about both the law and the authors’ pedagogical goals.
