Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wakefield Memorial: Comprising an Historical, Genealogical and Biographical Register of the Name and Family of Wakefield The indexes will be found complete and comprehensive, facilitating the location of any person or place in the work. To trace a lineage, either toward or from the progenitor of a family, the reader will find the consecutive numbering of the members of each great family, corresponding, from one generation to another, that is, a person has the some consecutive number in one generation, as a parent, that he would have in the previous generation as a child. It will be noticed that each local family recorded in the book, gives first the entire descent from the progenitor, and secondly the complete parentage, the records of which will always be found in the preceding generation. To trace relationship between two descendants, trace the two back to a common ancestor: if it be a parent, they would be brothers; if it be a grandparent, they would be cousins; if it be a great-grandparent, they would be cousins once removed; if it be a great-great-grandparent, they would be cousins twice removed, etc. If one is a grandchild and the other a great-grandchild, they would be said to be second, or half cousins, etc. There is no established connection between the several great families, except that they all undoubtedly descend from the original family of Wakefield, of Pontefract (pomfret), Yorkshire, Eng. • Author : Harlan Lane
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2011-01-07
  • ISBN : 0190454164

Download or read book The People of the Eye written by Harlan Lane and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are ethnic groups? Are Deaf people who sign American Sign Language (ASL) an ethnic group? In The People of the Eye, Deaf studies, history, cultural anthropology, genetics, sociology, and disability studies are brought to bear as the authors compare the values, customs, and social organization of the Deaf World to those in ethnic groups. Arguing against the common representation of ASL signers as a disability group, the authors discuss the many challenges to Deaf ethnicity in this first book-length examination of these issues. Stepping deeper into the debate around ethnicity status, The People of the Eye also describes, in a compelling narrative, the story of the founding families of the Deaf World in the US. Tracing ancestry back hundreds of years, the authors reveal that Deaf people's preference to marry other Deaf people led to the creation of Deaf clans, and thus to shared ancestry and the discovery that most ASL signers are born into the Deaf World, and many are kin. In a major contribution to the historical record of Deaf people in the US, The People of the Eye portrays how Deaf people- and hearing people, too- lived in early America. For those curious about their own ancestry in relation to the Deaf World, the figures and an associated website present pedigrees for over two hundred lineages that extend as many as three hundred years and are unique in genealogy research. The book contains an every-name index to the pedigrees, providing a rich resource for anyone who is interested in Deaf culture.

Book White Captives

Download or read book White Captives written by June Namias and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White Captives offers a new perspective of Indian-white coexistence on the American frontier through analysis of historical, anthropological, political, and literary materials. --> Namias shows that visual, literary, and historical accounts of the capture of Euro-Americans by Indians are commentaries on the uncertain boundaries of gender, race, and culture during the colonial Indian Wars, the American Revolution, and the Civil War. She compares the experiences and representations of male and female captives over time and on successive frontiers and examines the narratives of captives Jane McCrea, Mary Jemison, and Sarah Wakefield.

Book Busy in the Cause

Download or read book Busy in the Cause written by Lowell J. Soike and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the immense body of literature about the American Civil War and its causes, the nation’s western involvement in the approaching conflict often gets short shrift. Slavery was the catalyst for fiery rhetoric on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line and fiery conflicts on the western edges of the nation. Driven by questions regarding the place of slavery in westward expansion and by the increasing influence of evangelical Protestant faiths that viewed the institution as inherently sinful, political debates about slavery took on a radicalized, uncompromising fervor in states and territories west of the Mississippi River. Busy in the Cause explores the role of the Midwest in shaping national politics concerning slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War. In 1856 Iowa aided parties of abolitionists desperate to reach Kansas Territory to vote against the expansion of slavery, and evangelical Iowans assisted runaway slaves through Underground Railroad routes in Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. Lowell J. Soike’s detailed and entertaining narrative illuminates Iowa’s role in the stirring western events that formed the prelude to the Civil War.
