Book Energy Efficient Wake up Receivers for 915 MHz ISM Band Applications

Download or read book Energy Efficient Wake up Receivers for 915 MHz ISM Band Applications written by Shahaboddin Moazzeni and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wake-up receiver (WuRx) is a well-known approach for optimizing the latency and power consumption of ultra-low power transceivers in wireless sensor nodes.Tuned RF (TRF) or Envelope Detection architecture is an appropriate topology for short-range Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) applications, where achieving a very high sensitivity is not a priority. However, the demand for an improved sensitivity gets emphasized for longer transmission ranges. Regardless of the application, considering the existing trade-off between the power and sensitivity, design techniques and novel architectures are usually employed to optimize the power-sensitivity product. Moreover, considering the negative impact of higher data rate on the sensitivity, the energy-sensitivity product can be a more reasonable figure of merit when comparing WuRx designs. In this thesis, the RF-subsampling architecture has been combined with the TRF receiver architecture as a first approach for improving the power-sensitivity product. The overall power consumption is reduced as a result of employing the subsampling topology with a low-frequency local oscillator (LO). Post layout simulations show that the proposed WuRx draws only 56 oA from a 0.5 V supply and exhibits an input sensitivity of -70 dBm for a data rate of 100 kbps. The chip occupies an area of 0.15 mm2 and is fabricated with TSMC 90nm CMOS technology. Another major contribution of this work is to propose and implement a novel dual-mode ultra-low-power WuRx based on the subsampling topology, which not only reduces the overall power consumption but also optimizes the energy-sensitivity product of the receiver. During the typical mode of operation known as the Monitoring (MO) mode, the start frame bits are received at a rate of as low as 10 kbps. Having received the true preamble bits in the MO mode, the remaining wake-up pattern bits are received at a higher rate of 200 kbps during the Identifier (ID) mode. By lowering the gain of the front-end amplifier in the MO mode, the power dissipation is reduced, which in turn causes an increase in the overall noise figure of the receiver. However, adequate sensitivity and hence an optimized energy-sensitivity product is maintained by intentionally lowering the data rate as well as the detection bandwidth of the receiver in the MO mode. The proposed wake-up receiver has been designed and fabricated in IBM 130 nm technology with a core size of about 0.2 mm2 for the target frequency range of 902-928 MHz. The measured results show that the proposed dual-mode receiver achieves a sensitivity of -78.5 dBm and -75 dBm while dissipating an average power of 16.4 æW and 22.9 æW during MO and ID modes, respectively.

Book Wake Up Receivers for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Wake Up Receivers for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Christian Hambeck and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern semiconductor technology enables system integration on single chips with low cost and low energy consumption. But still, applications that rely on battery powered wireless sensor networks have to overcome the idle listening problem of radio receivers and avoid wasting energy during standby condition. The most common approach of scheduling communication protocols for lifetime extension leads to numerous drawbacks and difficulties, so the author discusses the alternative solution of a dedicated ultra-low power receiver, called "Wake-up Receiver" that simultaneously provides fast network reactivity. The focus is put on a survey of state-of-the-art work and on design and implementation of a novel receiver concept that is based on analog correlation. Measurement results of a fully integrated Wake-up Receiver realization in 130nm CMOS technology are presented. The benefit of significantly reduced power consumption down to a few microwatts as well as the increased sensitivity represent a clear improvement over prior solutions. Hence, the innovative Wake-up Receiver architecture has high potential for novel use cases and for future applications with ultra-low power budget.

Book Ultra Low Power Transceiver for Wireless Body Area Networks

Download or read book Ultra Low Power Transceiver for Wireless Body Area Networks written by Jens Masuch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) are expected to promote new applications for the ambulatory health monitoring of chronic patients and elderly population, aiming to improve their quality of life and independence. These networks are composed by wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) used for measuring physiological variables (e.g., glucose level in blood or body temperature) or controlling therapeutic devices (e.g., implanted insulin pumps). These nodes should exhibit a high degree of energy autonomy in order to extend their battery lifetime or even make the node supply to rely on harvesting techniques. Typically, the power budget of WSNs is dominated by the wireless link and, hence, many efforts have been directed during the last years toward the implementation of power efficient transceivers. Because of the short range (typically no more than a few meters) and low data rate (typically in between 10 kb/s and 1 Mb/s), simple communication protocols can be employed. One of these protocols, specifically tailored for WBAN applications, is the Bluetooth low energy (BLE) standard. This book describes the challenges and solutions for the design of ultra-low power transceivers for WBANs applications and presents the implementation details of a BLE transceiver prototype. Coverage includes not only the main concepts and architectures for achieving low power consumption, but also the details of the circuit design and its implementation in a standard CMOS technology.
