Book Waifs of the Mind Classic Reprint

Download or read book Waifs of the Mind Classic Reprint written by W. V. Newson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waifs of the Mind One of these was the English poet, Matthew Prior, a man with a penchant for figures and skill in questions of commerce. Because of these peculiarities, we find that in the year 17] I. The Lord Treasurer of England called upon him to assist in bringing about a much-desired treaty with France. Dear Matt, wrote Bolingbroke to the poet. Hide the nakedness of thy country, and give the best turn thy fertile brain will furnish thee with to the blunders of thy countrymen. Who are much better politicians than the French are poets. Another notable exception among commercially-minded poets is to be found in the author of this collection of verses. Entitled Waifs of the Mind. Nothing approaching a dalliance or a dawdling attitude of mind can be found in the life history of Mr. Newson, who, for over fifteen years. Has held the arduous and important office of Deputy Provincial Treasurer of the Province of Alberta. For a certainty, in this capacity, our poet can have no delicate susceptibilities concerning the accumulation of uncleanly cash; no obsessions that the sacred claw of literature must never. Never scrape for a living; no beliefs that a poet must wear his life away in isolation from his kind. There was once a clever man who warned his age to beware of dreamers, they were such practical persons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waifs of Three Years I took up the subject at the last moment, spending little more than a forenoon and an evening upon it. Longer care would probably have made the piece shorter, would certainly have made the execution more perfect still, the thoughts and feelings expressed were by no means the result of sudden conditions of mind, and I judge it best to print the whole without material alteration. Many of them came from the heart in sad hours of grief and gloom, which followed the death of an only son, a lad who was endeared to all who knew him, by his many lovable qualities and noble traits of mind which bespoke a promis ing future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Symphonies I have no apologies to offer for these stray waifs of my mind - I did not write them, they just wrote themselves, for ofttimes when Life's duties and responsibilities pressed upon me, these ofi'springs travailed, and their birth could no more have been suppressed than mortal could quench the power of Divinity. This very fact accounts for these varied children - some in the very slough of despond, some gay and lilting, some mediocre to painfulness, and some on the very mountain top of happiness and ecstasy -they sprang involuntarily and unbidden from the heart in its manifold moods. I lovingly dedicate them to my precious parents, the noble father of whom I was deprived so early in life, and my a ed mother who has been my constant companion throng life's vicissitudes as well as in its gayer hours. Book excerpt: A relentless alien bounty hunter encloses a Texas town under a dome to isolate, hunt, and kill its prey in “the ultimate horror novel” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). Ever since the copper mine closed, the West Texas desert hellholes of Inferno and Bordertown have been slowly dying. Snake River isn’t the only thing that divides them. Racism, gang wars, and anti-Mexican sentiment have turned the sun-scorched flatlands into a powder keg. If anything can unite them for now, at least in awe and wonder, it’s the UFO that comes soaring out of the clouds like a flaming locomotive. In the wake of the crash, a young alien named Daufin has arrived, too. A fugitive who has taken the form of a human, she knows the terror that awaits the inhabitants of this planet—because it is looking for her. When Stinger, the monstrous alien bounty hunter, arrives, it’s with a destructive fury and a devious plan to find Daufin—by entombing the residents in an impenetrable and inescapable dome. A relentless killing machine, Stinger has an infinite capacity for death and destruction. And over the next twenty-four hours, this town is going to bleed and burn. Now, the few remaining survivors must come together to protect Daufin, themselves, and the world beyond from total annihilation. From the New York Times–bestselling and Bram Stoker Award–winning author of Swan Song, Stinger was called “one of the best suspense novels of recent years” by the Science Fiction Chronicle.

Book excerpt: A “feisty, passionate novel” (Newsday) from a writer whose “storytelling instincts are nearly flawless” (The New York Times). The New York Times–bestselling author of thirty-nine books of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry including Legends of the Fall, Dalva, and Returning to Earth, Jim Harrison was one of our most beloved and acclaimed writers, adored by both readers and critics. Sundog is a powerful novel about the life and loves of a foreman named Robert Corvus Strang, who worked on giant dam projects around the world until he was crippled in a fall down a three-hundred-foot dam. Now as he tries to regain use of his legs, he has a chance to reassess his life, and a blasé journalist who has heard of Strang’s reputation in the field arrives to draw him out about his various incarnations. Strang, who has the violently heightened sensibilities of a man who has gone to the limits and back, recounts his monumental life moving from Michigan to Africa and the Amazon, including his several marriages and children, and dozens of lovers, Sundog is a story as true and gripping as real life, and ultimately as victorious.

Book The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt

Download or read book The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt written by Edmund Morris and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE AND THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD • One of Modern Library’s 100 best nonfiction books of all time • One of Esquire’s 50 best biographies of all time “A towering biography . . . a brilliant chronicle.”—Time This classic biography is the story of seven men—a naturalist, a writer, a lover, a hunter, a ranchman, a soldier, and a politician—who merged at age forty-two to become the youngest President in history. The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt begins at the apex of his international prestige. That was on New Year’s Day, 1907, when TR, who had just won the Nobel Peace Prize, threw open the doors of the White House to the American people and shook 8,150 hands. One visitor remarked afterward, “You go to the White House, you shake hands with Roosevelt and hear him talk—and then you go home to wring the personality out of your clothes.” The rest of this book tells the story of TR’s irresistible rise to power. During the years 1858–1901, Theodore Roosevelt transformed himself from a frail, asthmatic boy into a full-blooded man. Fresh out of Harvard, he simultaneously published a distinguished work of naval history and became the fist-swinging leader of a Republican insurgency in the New York State Assembly. He chased thieves across the Badlands of North Dakota with a copy of Anna Karenina in one hand and a Winchester rifle in the other. Married to his childhood sweetheart in 1886, he became the country squire of Sagamore Hill on Long Island, a flamboyant civil service reformer in Washington, D.C., and a night-stalking police commissioner in New York City. As assistant secretary of the navy, he almost single-handedly brought about the Spanish-American War. After leading “Roosevelt’s Rough Riders” in the famous charge up San Juan Hill, Cuba, he returned home a military hero, and was rewarded with the governorship of New York. In what he called his “spare hours” he fathered six children and wrote fourteen books. By 1901, the man Senator Mark Hanna called “that damned cowboy” was vice president. Seven months later, an assassin’s bullet gave TR the national leadership he had always craved. His is a story so prodigal in its variety, so surprising in its turns of fate, that previous biographers have treated it as a series of haphazard episodes. This book, the only full study of TR’s pre-presidential years, shows that he was an inevitable chief executive. “It was as if he were subconsciously aware that he was a man of many selves,” the author writes, “and set about developing each one in turn, knowing that one day he would be President of all the people.”
