The author considers Markov chains whose state space is equipped with the structure of an infinite, locally finite graph, or as a particular case, of a finitely generated group. The transition probabilities are assumed to be adapted to the underlying structure in some way that must be specified precisely in each case. From the probabilistic viewpoint, the question is what impact the particular type of structure has on various aspects of the behaviour of the random walk. Vice-versa, random walks may also be seen as useful tools for classifying, or at least describing the structure of graphs and groups. Links with spectral theory and discrete potential theory are also discussed. This book will be essential reading for all researchers working in stochastic process and related topics.

This book is about time-homogeneous Markov chains that evolve with discrete time steps on a countable state space. A specific feature is the systematic use, on a relatively elementary level, of generating functions associated with transition probabilities for analyzing Markov chains. Basic definitions and facts include the construction of the trajectory space and are followed by ample material concerning recurrence and transience, the convergence and ergodic theorems for positive recurrent chains. There is a side-trip to the Perron-Frobenius theorem. Special attention is given to reversible Markov chains and to basic mathematical models of population evolution such as birth-and-death chains, Galton-Watson process and branching Markov chains. A good part of the second half is devoted to the introduction of the basic language and elements of the potential theory of transient Markov chains. Here the construction and properties of the Martin boundary for describing positive harmonic functions are crucial. In the long final chapter on nearest neighbor random walks on (typically infinite) trees the reader can harvest from the seed of methods laid out so far, in order to obtain a rather detailed understanding of a specific, broad class of Markov chains. The level varies from basic to more advanced, addressing an audience from master's degree students to researchers in mathematics, and persons who want to teach the subject on a medium or advanced level. Measure theory is not avoided; careful and complete proofs are provided. A specific characteristic of the book is the rich source of classroom-tested exercises with solutions.

The scientific committee of the meeting consisted of M. Barlow (Vancouver), R. Strichartz (Ithaca), P. Grabner and W. Woess (both Graz), the latter two being the local organizers and editors of this volume. We made an effort to unite in the conference as well as in the present pro ceedings a multitude of different directions of active current work, and to bring together researchers from various countries as well as research fields that all are linked in some way with the modern theory of fractal structures. Although (or because) in Graz there is only a very small group working on fractal structures, consisting of "non-insiders", we hope to have been successful with this program of wide horizons. All papers were written upon explicit invitation by the editors, and we are happy to be able to present this representative panorama of recent work on poten tial theory, random walks, spectral theory, fractal groups, dynamic systems, fractal geometry, and more. The papers presented here underwent a refereeing process.

The growing inter-relation between the different areas in discrete mathematics is maybe best illustrated by the fact that many of the participants who were present at the previous meetings also attended this meeting on Finite and Infinite Combinatorics in Sets and Logic.

What with a finite graph - when it is thought of as opposed to an infinite one? What structural elements are typical for either - by their presence or absence - yet provide a common ground for both? In planning the workshop on "Cycles and Rays" it had been intended from the outset to bring infinite graphs to the fore as much as possible. There never had been a graph theoretical meeting in which infinite graphs were more than "also rans", let alone one in which they were a central theme. In part, this is a matter of fashion, inasmuch as they are perceived as not readily lending themselves to applications, in part it is a matter of psychology stemming from the insecurity that many graph theorists feel in the face of set theory - on which infinite graph theory relies to a considerable extent. The result is that by and large, infinite graph theorists know what is happening in finite graphs but not conversely. Lack of knowledge about infinite graph theory can also be found in authoritative l sources. For example, a recent edition (1987) of a major mathematical encyclopaedia proposes to ". . . restrict [itself] to finite graphs, since only they give a typical theory". If anything, the reverse is true, and needless to say, the graph theoretical world knows better. One may wonder, however, by how much.
