Book Wagner s Ring of the Nibelung A Companion

Download or read book Wagner s Ring of the Nibelung A Companion written by Barry Millington and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1993-08-17 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scrupulous . . . planned and executed with quite unusual care." —Opera There has long been a need for a modern English translation of Wagner's Ring—a version that is reliable and readable yet at the same time is a true reflection of the literary quality of the German libretto. This acclaimed translation, which follows the verse form of the original exactly, fills that niche. It reads smoothly and idiomatically, yet is the result of prolonged thought and deep background knowledge. The translation is accompanied by Stewart Spencer's introductory essay on the libretto and a series of specially commissioned texts by Barry Millington, Roger Hollinrake, Elizabeth Magee and Warren Darcy that discuss the cycle's musical structure, philosophical implications, medieval sources and Wagner's own changing attitude to its meaning. With a glossary of names, a review of audio and video recordings, and a select bibliography, the book is an essential complement to Wagner's great epic.

Book Wagner Beyond Good and Evil

Download or read book Wagner Beyond Good and Evil written by John Deathridge and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2008-07-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection provides us with that rarest of objects: a genuinely new book on Wagner. Virtually every page offers fresh perspectives, some of them mined from the most unlikely of sources; indeed, the sheer eclecticism of the book, its willingness to range widely and irreverently through both popular and elite culture, is one of its greatest strengths."—Roger Parker, author of Remaking the Song: Operatic Visions and Revisions from Handel to Berio "John Deathridge is one of the most authoritative, widely-regarded Wagner scholars around in any language. Few can match his command of scholarship and primary sources, and no one else knows how to put them to such clever, provocative uses. In addition, Deathridge enjoys an impressive range of critical, historical, and literary reference. The writing is consistently lively and engaging. The collection will provide a welcome change of diet for those tired of the usual Wagnerian fare. This is a welcome contribution, indeed."—Thomas Grey, author of Wagner's Musical Prose: Texts and Contexts

Book Wagner s Ring in 1848

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Wagner
  • Publisher : Camden House
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 1571133798
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Wagner s Ring in 1848 written by Richard Wagner and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2010 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1848 Richard Wagner began what would become the largest stage work of his career, the Ring of the Nibelung. In preparation for the task he composed an overview of the Nibelung myth designed to lead to a drama; he then composed the verse "libretto" Siegfried's Death. Although he abandoned the idea of a single opera on Siegfried in favor of the huge project that developed out of it in the succeeding years -- the Ring cycle -- he did consider the two early documents important enough to include them in his collected works. The present volume seeks to inform the English-speaking reader in three ways: by providing modern, reliable translations of the two Wagner texts, which are otherwise not available (the German original is provided on facing pages); by furnishing an overview of German scholarship available to Wagner and others working on the Nibelung legend in the first half of the nineteenth century; and by making available a bibliography of further reading. The volume will be useful to students of musicology, to students and historians of myth and legend, and to all Wagnerians interested in the genesis of the Ring cycle. Accessible to the general reader, it maintains scholarly rigor and provides information about materials not available in English. Edward R. Haymes is Professor in the Department of Modern Languages at Cleveland State University.

Book excerpt: "Wagner's Ring cycle--The Ring of the Niebelung--has been described as one of the most enduring of operatic spectacles, and the best writing on the subject has here been brought together in a collection that includes articles by George Bernard Shaw, Georg Solti and Andrew Porter; excerpts from Wagner's own letters and works; and discourses by over thirty other writers. Here is a complete coverage of the tetralogy of the Ring--Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung--in essays on Wagner's intention, the theory behind it, its interpretation, artistic backgrounds, historical influences, literary sources, musical architecture, modern stagings, the Ring in English, and various styles of performance. We are living in the midst of a worldwide Wagner renaissance, and this anthology will enrich and enlighten both performers and fans of Wagner's timeless operas, while serving as a superb introduction to those new to the Ring." --Back cover.

This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Companion is an essential, interdisciplinary tool for those both familiar and unfamiliar with Wagner's Ring. It opens with a concise introduction to both the composer and the Ring, introducing Wagner as a cultural figure, and giving a comprehensive overview of the work. Subsequent chapters, written by leading Wagner experts, focus on musical topics such as 'leitmotif', and structure, and provide a comprehensive set of character portraits, including leading players like Wotan, Brünnhilde, and Siegfried. Further chapters look to the mythological background of the work and the idea of the Bayreuth Festival, as well as critical reception of the Ring, its relationship to Nazism, and its impact on literature and popular culture, in turn offering new approaches to interpretation including gender, race and environmentalism. The volume ends with a history of notable stage productions from the world premiere in 1876 to the most recent stagings in Bayreuth and elsewhere.
