Book excerpt: The town of Brighton was founded by railroad man and real estate developer Daniel F. Carmichael at the junction of the Denver Pacific (now Union Pacific) and Denver and Boulder Valley Railroads. Carmichael determined, "There should be a town here that would do credit to the splendid valley." The junction, originally named Hughes after the first president of the Denver Pacific Railroad, had a long history as a crossroads of the West. The town grew into an agricultural center for the Platte River Valley with a thriving sugar beet industry, dairies, and canning factories, but the changing economy would transform Brighton first into a suburban community and now into one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.

Book Wagner Nights

Download or read book Wagner Nights written by Joseph Horowitz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As never before or since, Richard Wagner's name dominated American music-making at the close of the nineteenth century. Europe, too, was obsessed with Wagner, but—as Joseph Horowitz shows in this first history of Wagnerism in the United States—the American obsession was unique. The central figure in Wagner Nights is conductor Anton Seidl (1850-1898), a priestly and enigmatic personage in New York musical life. Seidl's own admirers included the women of the Brooklyn-based Seidl Society, who wore the letter "S" on their dresses. In the summers, Seidl conducted fourteen times a week at Brighton Beach, filling the three-thousand-seat music pavilion to capacity. The fact that most Wagnerites were women was a distinguishing feature of American Wagnerism and constituted a vital aspect of the fin-de-siècle ferment that anticipated the New American Woman. Drawing on the work of such cultural historians as T. Jackson Lears and Lawrence Levine, Horowitz's lively history reveals an "Americanized" Wagner never documented before. An entertaining and startling read, a treasury of operatic lore, Wagner Nights offers an unprecedented revisionist history of American culture a century ago. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1994.

Book Outposts of the Faith

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Yelton
  • Publisher : Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 1853119857
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Outposts of the Faith written by Michael Yelton and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2009 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outposts of the Faith offers ten compelling portraits of country churches where the Anglo-Catholic movement flourished during the twentieth century. Rightly famed for its dedicated and heroic work in poor inner-city areas, little is recorded about the impact of Anglo-Catholicism in rural parishes, nor have the stories of some of its more colourful rural priests and people been told, nor of those forces at work in out of the way places which affected the wider church and subsequent direction of the movement. From Cornwall to the Fens, Michael Yelton has conducted visits, interviews and archival research and has created vividly detailed and inspiring accounts. Here we encounter some well known names about whom very little has been written. We also meet some individuals who made outstanding contributions to Anglo-Catholicism in their day, but whose names and accomplishments have become almost forgotten. Outposts of the Faith records devotion and eccentricity in generous measure - we meet one priest who removed parts of his clerical clothing whenever any part of the 1662 Prayer Book was recited, another who was shot by a parishioner, another who faithfully served the same Devon parish for seventy years.

Book The English Urban Landscape

Download or read book The English Urban Landscape written by Philip Waller and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-03-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A volume on the history of the English urban environment that will appeal to both general readers and academic specialists. The emphasis throughout is emphatically that of the historian, rather than the physical geographer: that is, a primary focus on the people who make the landscapes, the changing social structure of the communities, and the different economies which sustained them. The text is enhanced by 130 integrated illustrations, including half-tones and diagrams. The thirteen chapters combine chronological and thematic surveys. After a general introduction by Dr Waller, chapters 2-5 provide overviews of how the urban landscape in England developed during the Roman period, the Early Medieval period, the Medieval period, and the Early Modern Period. The second, larger part of the text offers a variety of thematic approaches to the history of the built environment, with a focus on the last two centuries: metropolitanism, the commercial city, the industrial city, transport, slums and suburbs, recreation, civil and ecclesiastical, and artistic and literary. In addition there are a number of cameo features throughout the text, eg on a small market town, a garden city, a council estate, the Potteries. There is a list of further reading on each chapter.
