Book City Cycling

Download or read book City Cycling written by John Pucher and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-10-19 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to today's urban cycling renaissance, with information on cycling's health benefits, safety, bikes and bike equipment, bike lanes, bike sharing, and other topics. Bicycling in cities is booming, for many reasons: health and environmental benefits, time and cost savings, more and better bike lanes and paths, innovative bike sharing programs, and the sheer fun of riding. City Cycling offers a guide to this urban cycling renaissance, with the goal of promoting cycling as sustainable urban transportation available to everyone. It reports on cycling trends and policies in cities in North America, Europe, and Australia, and offers information on such topics as cycling safety, cycling infrastructure provisions including bikeways and bike parking, the wide range of bike designs and bike equipment, integration of cycling with public transportation, and promoting cycling for women and children. City Cycling emphasizes that bicycling should not be limited to those who are highly trained, extremely fit, and daring enough to battle traffic on busy roads. The chapters describe ways to make city cycling feasible, convenient, and safe for commutes to work and school, shopping trips, visits, and other daily transportation needs. The book also offers detailed examinations and illustrations of cycling conditions in different urban environments: small cities (including Davis, California, and Delft, the Netherlands), large cities (including Sydney, Chicago, Toronto and Berlin), and “megacities” (London, New York, Paris, and Tokyo). These chapters offer a closer look at how cities both with and without historical cycling cultures have developed cycling programs over time. The book makes clear that successful promotion of city cycling depends on coordinating infrastructure, programs, and government policies.

Book Turkey Greece and the Borders of Europe

Download or read book Turkey Greece and the Borders of Europe written by Douglas Reynolds and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Turkey has long aspired to join Europe both politically and culturally. However, its attempts to do so have been met with scepticism, and there is no unequivocal answer to the question of whether or not Turkey is accepted and viewed as European. This question is of particular interest in the case of Germany, the engine of the European Union’s economy which is not only home to millions of Turkish immigrants, but also has a history of cooperation with Turkey unique among European countries. With its analysis of West German prestige newspapers printed between 1950 and 1975, this study looks into how Germans viewed Turkey from a cultural and political perspective during a critical period of Turkish integration with the West and Europe, and compares this with perceptions of Greece, whose path to Europe was far less problematic by virtue of its classical legacy and Christian heritage.

Book The Spaces of Public Issues

Download or read book The Spaces of Public Issues written by Daniela Stoltenberg and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideas about matters of public concern are shaped by the spaces associated with them: Events occur in particular places, political regulations apply to specific territories, people in different locations are differentially affected by issues. Yet, political communication research has neglected the question of how the spaces of public issues are constructed in the public sphere. This is especially true for research on social media communication, which is often perceived as placeless. Yet, social media discourses are driven by unequal attention patterns based on users’ interests, resources, and abilities. To understand how these patterns manifest spatially, this interdisciplinary monograph builds on public spheres theory, communication infrastructure theory, and urban sociology to develop the framework of issue spatiality. It focuses on how social media users discuss different places in urban policy issue discourses. By applying the framework to four large-scale Twitter discourses on housing markets and cycling infrastructure in two German cities, Berlin and Frankfurt, the research reveals the spatial patterns and inequalities of social media discourses. It demonstrates that digital discourses are overwhelmingly focused on a small number of places in the urban center. These places emerge as the locus of activism and political controversy, while the urban periphery remains hidden or is discussed in purely administrative terms. Places with dense civic infrastructure and privileged residents receive disproportionate attention. The book provides an in-depth look at the ways in which socio-spatial inequalities are inscribed in public communication and shape ideas about societal issues.

Book Sustainable Mobility in Munich

Download or read book Sustainable Mobility in Munich written by Chelsea Tschoerner-Budde and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-11 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chelsea Tschoerner-Budde analyzes discourse in two cases of sustainable mobility policymaking in Munich: cycling promotion and electric mobility promotion. Both cases revealed that the formation and integration of a new, socially driven discourse on everyday mobility was necessary for policy change. Historically, transport policy has been structured to improve flow and manage transport systems. The new ‘everyday mobility cultures’ approach presents a potential framework for improving policymaking and fostering a transition in the transport sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing: The Field of Knowledge provides an analytical and critical introduction to the current state of knowledge in psychiatric and mental health nursing in the UK. The first section of the book explores current professional, disciplinary and educational contexts. In the second section leading UK authors from diverse academic settings provide case studies of the knowledge and scientific traditions they draw on to inform their practice, understand patient needs, and foster different aspects of nursing practice. In the final section the UK authors comment on each other’s accounts. Those chapters and comments are then discussed by leading overseas academics to provide an invaluable international perspective. The final stage is a sociologically-informed analysis which identifies sociopolitical trends in order to make sense of the UK and international views. The editor then assesses the potential for intellectual integration and collective advance in psychiatric and mental health nursing.
