Book excerpt: Climb into My Mind is a book jam-packed with poems, essays, and short stories. The topics addressed are those that pertain to school life, political and social issues, family and love. Meandering through the maze that is my mind I present a different perspective on how I, as a teenager, look at the way situations unfold and how they affect me. This is not quite a typical book, yet it is easy to relate to as you find comfort in knowing that you are not alone in the world. The section, What I See in the Mirror, is an introspection of my deepest feelings. Undoubtedly, we all experience bad and depressing times in our lives. We often feel as if no one understands what we are going through, but I hope the poem themes in this section will create a connection with you. While some of the poems tackle both pleasant and unpleasant experiences, the stories introduce you to new characters, which bring an imaginative and lively angle to the world around us with a bit of a twist. A few of the stories and poems are funny, whereas others are more serious as they deal with political events and social awareness bringing different perspectives to controversial topics such as gay marriage and teen pregnancy. My hope is that this book comforts, intrigues, captivates, and amuses you. So what are you waiting for, grab a ladder and climb into my mind. My Voice I feel the tattoos on my back sting, but I know that one more scar wouldnt change the memory it has left behind. With no reason to live, I feel ready to take that final step. I rise from my spot and give my fingers a break. I glance down at the tobacco leaves I have picked, knowing I am not allowed to stop. But why should I care? I have no voice, I serve no purpose. I am just a slave. I stand still looking in his eyes full of hate. He whips out his weapon as I begin to walk away from my work area. I never turn my head as he yells for me to turn back. I keep marching at a steady pace until I see beyond the fields a man of my kind with a voice -- a voice that is strong, that is making others listen; a voice that has power, and speaks only for change. This makes me turn around and sit back down, knowing my voice wont take long to be heard.

Book What Are Esports The Different Types Of Esports Tournaments How To Be Prepared To Compete In Esports Tournaments The Challenges Of Competing In Esports Tournaments And The Benefits Of Competing In Esports Tournaments As A Professional Gamer

Download or read book What Are Esports The Different Types Of Esports Tournaments How To Be Prepared To Compete In Esports Tournaments The Challenges Of Competing In Esports Tournaments And The Benefits Of Competing In Esports Tournaments As A Professional Gamer written by Dr. Harrison Sachs and published by The Epic Books Of Dr. Harrison Sachs. This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay sheds light on what are esports, demystifies the different types of esports tournaments, explicates how to be prepared to compete in esports tournaments, delineates the challenges of competing in esports tournaments, and reveals the benefits of competing in esports tournaments as a professional gamer. Esports are deemed to electronic sports that involve professional gamers vying for victory against one another in competitive video game matches in esports tournaments. Esports provide a type of spectator entertainment for people who revel in watching competitive video game matches. Esports have provided lucrative career opportunities for professional gamers to avail themselves of. Even though it can be extraordinarily arduous to prevail in a competitive esports tournament against highly adept professional gamers, gamers however deem it to be a warranted time expenditure to attempt to become a highly adept professional gamer. Prevailing in a competitive esports tournament against highly adept professional gamers can culminate in the victor of the esports tournament not only summarily obtaining extreme wealth, but also summarily attaining extreme fame leverage in contexts in which the competitive esports tournament offers an enormous prize pool and has massive viewership levels. The International 2021, a Dota 2 esports tournament, for instance offered a $40,018,400.00 total prize pool. The International 2019, a Dota 2 esports tournament, for instance offered a $34,330,069.00 total prize pool. The International 2018, a Dota 2 esports tournament, for instance offered a $25,532,177.00 total prize pool. The International 2017, a Dota 2 esports tournament, for instance offered a $24,687,919.00 total prize pool. It can be extraordinarily cumbersome to be able to masterfully play esports video games at the meta-game level. Even though the prospect of competing in highly competitive esports tournaments that have sizeable prize pools may be eminently enticing to non-wealthy gamers, a gamer should nonetheless be acutely aware that he needs to be an extremely adept gamer to have a chance to attain a high rank in a competitive esports tournament against highly adept professional gamers. Professional gamers expend a substantial amount of time practicing masterfully playing esports video games at the meta-game level every week, typically for at least forty to ninety hours per week. Being a mediocre professional gamer will render you inapt to prevail in highly competitive esports tournaments against highly adept professional gamers. The professional gamer’s career revolves around spending most of his waking hours practicing masterfully playing esports video games at the meta-game level. Practicing masterfully playing esports video games at the meta-game level for most of his waking hours does not guarantee that a professional gamer will be able to attain a high rank in a competitive esports tournament against other highly adept professional gamers. It is ironical that expending almost one hundred hours per week into practicing masterfully playing esports video games at the meta-game level does not guarantee that a professional gamer will be able to trounce other professional gamers in competitive esports tournaments who earmark far less hours per week into practicing masterfully playing esports video games at the meta-game level. Attempting to become adept enough at playing esports video games to be at a high probability to attain a high rank in a competitive esports tournament against other highly adept professional gamers is a highly time draining pursuit that is not for the faint of heart. Professional gamers are expected to be the utmost skilled gamers who are able to masterfully play esports video games at the meta-game level with extreme ease. Even though a copious amount of gamers aspire to become professional gamers, they however lack the requisite time to be able to expend practicing masterfully playing esports video games at the meta-game level. It can be arduous to become a professional gamer if you lack the motivation to consistently practice masterfully playing esports video games at the meta-game level for at least eight to fourteen hours per day everyday. The competitive landscape of esports is replete with competition and the costs to become a professional gamer are often grossly underestimated. The costs to become a professional gamer are far more than just the total costs of a gaming computer, a gaming headset, a gaming mouse, a gaming keyboard, a broadband internet subscription service, and esports video games.

Book excerpt: Sowell Swift, before experiencing a life-transforming accident, was a physically normal young man of somewhat above-average intelligence. At the age of fifteen, he survived being accidentally electrocuted. Subsequent to that incident, the functioning of his mind and muscles was "accelerated." (Comparing it to the functioning of a computer, it seemed as though his "internal Central Processing Unit," having formerly been a "286 megabyte" unit, was supercharged into functioning as a powerhouse "10 Gigabyte" CPU.) This story accompanies Sowell through his final three years of high school, detailing his participation and prowess in all athletics, subsequent to his near-fatal accident. It then recounts how Sowell Swift transitions into professional sports, eventually becoming an "MVP" (most valuable player) for the New York Yankees. The story also looks in on Sowell's emotional struggles, letting the reader share in Sowell's reactions, thoughts, emotions, and reasoning processes. There is much laughter, but also some tears. Although he is physically superior, he must still grow through difficult emotional development, and into maturity and manhood. He has to face what every adolescent faces - and inevitably, that is a daunting challenge. The story offers the opportunity of vicariously sharing in the experiences, (with the highs, the lows, the pain of love, and the joy of love, ) of a humorous and very likable young man, one whom most of us would choose as a close friend, if given the opportunity.

Book Spirit Warrior

Download or read book Spirit Warrior written by Peter Zindler and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fortified with their overwhelming verbal support, Megog dipped his muscled shoulder and shot forward. Quickly I dodged to the right, but he had anticipated my very move and crashed straight into my chest. He had guessed my path of escape. With a loud thud, my back slammed the mat and my head bounced off the hard rubber surface. Starbursts of pain rocketed through my brain like a meteor shower. I lay there dazed, unable to move. The crowd jumped to their feet and cheered! Megog had executed a brilliant combination move. This society's love of violence in sport was particularly keen. Pulling myself to my knees, I couldn't breathe. My eyes refused to focus and all I could see was a colorful kaleidoscope of fuzzy objects. My head felt like it was in a hot steel vice that someone was tightening. Again, I gasped for air, but none came. I knew what would happen next and tried to raise my arms to defend myself, but my body rebelled. My brain couldn't activate my muscles. "Dear Jesus," was all I could say before I fell to the mat in an unconscious heap.

Book excerpt: Unifies writings by leading scholars on various aspects of the 1923 Irish general election. After eleven arduous months, on May 24, 1923, the guns fell silent, and the Irish Civil War finally came to an end. Twelve weeks later, all adults aged twenty-one or over--regardless of social status or gender--cast their vote in the state's first general election. The 1923 general election marks the true beginning of modern Irish democracy. Born in blood, the new Irish Free State was set on course to become a remarkably stable democracy in the late 1920s and early 1930s, in stark contrast to the rise of dictatorships across Europe. The Irish public had an opportunity to cast their judgment on who they wanted to govern their new free state, and cast their opinion on the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty, even though it had been ratified in January 1922. A record 376 candidates stood for election, so every seat was contested--another first in Irish electoral history. This book offers fresh and thought-provoking insights rooted deeply in original archival research. The Cumann na nGaedheal Party's "safety first" election campaign; the importance of the election for Éamon de Valera; the perspectives of the Labour and Farmers' Parties; the propaganda and electioneering tactics deployed by the various parties; and newspaper coverage of the election, amongst many other areas, are all richly explored. Further, this collection takes a forensic look at the end of the Irish Civil War and the August 1923 election in a wider European context; the Catholic Church's attitude toward the election; the roles of women in the 1923 election; and the engagement of the Irish diaspora in North America. Vying for Victory offers a deeply researched, original, and fascinating analysis of the very first democratic step of a free Irish nation. It will be a valuable resource to Irish history enthusiasts, as well as students and scholars of Irish history.

New York City during World War II wasn't just a place of servicemen, politicians, heroes, G.I. Joes and Rosie the Riveters, but also of quislings and saboteurs; of Nazi, Fascist, and Communist sympathizers; of war protesters and conscientious objectors; of gangsters and hookers and profiteers; of latchkey kids and bobby-soxers, poets and painters, atomic scientists and atomic spies. While the war launched and leveled nations, spurred economic growth, and saw the rise and fall of global Fascism, New York City would eventually emerge as the new capital of the world. From the Gilded Age to VJ-Day, an array of fascinating New Yorkers rose to fame, from Mayor Fiorello La Guardia to Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Langston Hughes to Joe Louis, to Robert Moses and Joe DiMaggio. In Victory City, John Strausbaugh returns to tell the story of New York City's war years with the same richness, depth, and nuance he brought to his previous books, City of Sedition and The Village, providing readers with a groundbreaking new look into the greatest city on earth during the most transformative -- and costliest -- war in human history.

Book Victory s Shadow

Download or read book Victory s Shadow written by Thomas W. Barton and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the eleventh century, Catalonia was a patchwork of counties, viscounties, and lordships that bordered Islamic al-Andalus to the south. Over the next two centuries, the region underwent a dramatic transformation. The counts of Barcelona secured title to the neighboring kingdom of Aragon through marriage and this newly constituted Crown of Aragon, after numerous failed attempts, finally conquered the Islamic states positioned along its southern frontier in the mid-twelfth century. Successful conquest, however, necessitated considerable organizational challenges that threatened to destabilize, politically and economically, this triumphant regime. The Aragonese monarchy's efforts to overcome these adversities, consolidate its authority, and capitalize on its military victories would impose lasting changes on its governmental framework and exert considerable influence over future expansionist projects. In Victory's Shadow, Thomas W. Barton offers a sweeping new account of the capture and long-term integration of Muslim-ruled territories by an ascendant Christian regime and a detailed analysis of the influence of this process on the governmental, economic, and broader societal development of both Catalonia and the greater Crown of Aragon. Based on over a decade of extensive archival research, Victory's Shadow deftly reconstructs and evaluates the decisions, outcomes, and costs involved in this experience of territorial integration and considers its implications for ongoing debates regarding the dynamics of expansionism across the diverse boundary zones of medieval Europe.
